PB hotel design editorial

Carved from the lava fields of the Kohala Coast, where ancient Hawaiian fishponds meet one of the Big Island's most protected white-sand coves, Mauna Lani Auberge Resorts Collection carries the full weight of a site that was considered sacred long before any hotel existed here. The resort opened originally in 1983 and was substantially reimagined following Auberge's takeover, with interior designer Nicole Hollis leading a renovation that completed around 2020 across the property's 334 rooms and bungalows. Hollis's approach resolves a tension that bedevils most Hawaiian resort design: how to honor place without retreating into tiki pastiche. The answer, visible throughout, is restraint applied with warmth — guest rooms rendered in oatmeal linen, woven rope wall panels, circular botanical artwork in deep green, and mid-century-inflected lounge chairs in natural oak, all oriented toward ocean balconies that frame the Pacific like a held breath. The bungalow accommodations push the material language further, their steeply pitched cathedral ceilings with exposed koa-toned timber rafters and hand-carved floral headboards giving those spaces an atmosphere closer to an artisan's compound than a hotel room. At grade, a rectangular infinity-edge pool set in teak decking steps down toward the beach through layered coconut palms, while the open-sided restaurant — heavy Douglas fir beams, wicker dining chairs, yellow-cushioned banquettes, a bar framed by the treeline — dissolves the boundary between interior and the lava-rock coastline beyond.

About

Nestled along the dramatic Kohala Coast and in the piko, or center, of five great mountains, Mauna Lani is a sacred oasis where generations of families and friends have made memories together on soulful lands once cherished by the greatest of Hawaiian royalty. Greet the morning sun as it rises above the mountains' peaks from the seat of an outrigger canoe. Talk story with friends old and new at the Great Lawn as the sounds of ocean waves and laughter mingle. Dine amongst the company of loved ones at CanoeHouse, where locals have savored the island's bounty for decades. As you walk this storied coastline, breathe the rejuvenating salt air and swim in the crystalline waters, you feel the same mana, or spiritual energy, that first captivated legends like King Kamehameha I and Francis H. I'i Brown.

"Mauna Lani, Auberge Collection is the nicest, most friendly place I've ever stayed at while vacationing. That's saying a lot since I've traveled many places throughout the world. The staff really appears to love their jobs, which is translated directly into providing an excellent experience for their guests. The location and accommodations are beautiful. Food wonderful. Amenities many and varied. Such a nice, nice, nice place!!"

"Our stay was beyond exceptional. The food was incredible, and we felt right at home throughout our stay. We are looking forward to returning as old friends. The staff that lead each on-property experience was an expert in their craft, passionate, knowledgeable, approachable and engaging. The complimentary activities added due to the weather and the pro-active engagement of the concierge lounge was much appreciated. There were always chairs available at the pool and beach, and the hot tub was always hot."

"When we began the search process for a tropical location to celebrate our mile stone anniversary, Mauna Lani kept coming up. We wanted a place to enjoy beaches, snorkeling, fine dining, and golf. Mauna Lani checked all the boxes. It is a stunning property, from the beautifully manicured interior to the amazing views from your lanai, it is a Hawaiian dream. We stayed in a 3rd floor oceanfront room, and I would highly recommend being at least this high to get the best view, while still maintaining your privacy. Although unfortunate to experience the powerful Kona Low, we were able to squeeze in a round of golf at the famous south championship course, definitely one of the most beautiful, well kept, courses we have ever played on. Outside of golf, we enjoyed the sunrise canoe, and snorkeling. Having the complementary snorkel gear at your fingertips and being able to snorkel directly from the beach, was super convenient and better than some southern locations. Bring your water shoes and make sure to stroll along the water's edge where we saw an endangered monk seal, and several turtles sunbathing. We dined in all the restaurants including the Canoe House where they were celebrating head chef Rhoda Magbitang, a current contestant on Top Chef. In the evenings, we also enjoyed the live music near the bar while sipping a lychee martinis, they are simply amazing. Because the hotel is approximately 30 minutes from the town of Kailua-Kona, and to be able to explore the cute smaller towns around, I would highly recommend renting a car, but note there is a daily parking/valet fee of $40/day. If you just need to grab some small items from the grocery, you can take the complementary bikes for a beautiful 3 minute ride to the shops of Mauna Lani. Would I recommend and return to Mauna Lani? An astounding "yes"."

"The staff at the Mauna Lani provide outstanding hospitality and will treat you like a valued guest. The entire staff is pleasant, professional, helpful and will do whatever they can to ensure you enjoy your stay. They will greet you with a smile and call you by name. The property is located in the Waikoloa Beach Resort area overlooking the ocean. There is a small sandy beach out front and a larger sand beach a short walk down an ocean-front path. There are three pools on property. The facility is stunning, spotless and has a spacious, open-air feel. I would call the design "Hawaiian Contemporary". Although the resort has over 300 rooms, it never felt crowded. Our room was spacious, clean, well-stocked, nicely furnished, had a large patio, a very comfortable bed and two sinks in the bathroom. Their two main resturants (Canoe House and HaLani) are both noteworthy. They have a deli/coffee shop that opens at 5:30AM to cater to people heading out on early morning adventures. The resort also has an impressive array of activities throughout the day. Three minutes from the resort is a shopping center where you can pick-up supplies as well as a Tommy Bahama restuarant that serves tasty food in an inviting atmosphere. The resort is not inexpensive, but I consider it a good value given the level of service the entire staff provides and the overall atmosphere and ambiance you experience while you are there."

"We are absolutely obsessed with the Mauna Lani! We decided to stay there for the first half of our honeymoon and we were so pleasantly surprised by the quality of our stay. From the hotel room to the staff and service, we would genuinely plan our next vacation around finding an Auberge property. The food and beverage options were consistent and delicious, the pool service was flawless and we were never having to flag anyone down. We felt so pampered and it was hard coming home. I would 10/10 recommend the Mauna Lani to anyone visiting Hawaii!"
