PB hotel design editorial

Carved from the lava fields of the Kohala Coast, where ancient Hawaiian fishponds meet one of the Big Island's most protected white-sand coves, Mauna Lani Auberge Resorts Collection carries the full weight of a site that was considered sacred long before any hotel existed here. The resort opened originally in 1983 and was substantially reimagined following Auberge's takeover, with interior designer Nicole Hollis leading a renovation that completed around 2020 across the property's 334 rooms and bungalows. Hollis's approach resolves a tension that bedevils most Hawaiian resort design: how to honor place without retreating into tiki pastiche. The answer, visible throughout, is restraint applied with warmth — guest rooms rendered in oatmeal linen, woven rope wall panels, circular botanical artwork in deep green, and mid-century-inflected lounge chairs in natural oak, all oriented toward ocean balconies that frame the Pacific like a held breath. The bungalow accommodations push the material language further, their steeply pitched cathedral ceilings with exposed koa-toned timber rafters and hand-carved floral headboards giving those spaces an atmosphere closer to an artisan's compound than a hotel room. At grade, a rectangular infinity-edge pool set in teak decking steps down toward the beach through layered coconut palms, while the open-sided restaurant — heavy Douglas fir beams, wicker dining chairs, yellow-cushioned banquettes, a bar framed by the treeline — dissolves the boundary between interior and the lava-rock coastline beyond.

About

Nestled along the dramatic Kohala Coast and in the piko, or center, of five great mountains, Mauna Lani is a sacred oasis where generations of families and friends have made memories together on soulful lands once cherished by the greatest of Hawaiian royalty. Greet the morning sun as it rises above the mountains' peaks from the seat of an outrigger canoe. Talk story with friends old and new at the Great Lawn as the sounds of ocean waves and laughter mingle. Dine amongst the company of loved ones at CanoeHouse, where locals have savored the island's bounty for decades. As you walk this storied coastline, breathe the rejuvenating salt air and swim in the crystalline waters, you feel the same mana, or spiritual energy, that first captivated legends like King Kamehameha I and Francis H. I'i Brown.

"Our young family of five with 3 toddlers had an exceptional experience. We were well taken care of from arrival to departure. The property is stunning and very family friendly. Kids toys available to borrow, children’s utensils and plastic cups at meals, kids club and a small pool for children. Abundant activities we took advantage of. The staff was really responsive throughout to take care of any special requests in a timely manner. We would definitely visit Mauna Lani Auberge again."

"Location is incredible, beautiful views all around the property. Great atmosphere, traveling with wife and kids the vibes were high with other families around and I felt if it was just my wife and I the vibes were still great. There was so much space and places for adults to unwind away from the kids. Our room was elite with ocean front views, great shower pressure, kitchen area to stock snacks. Staff did a great job cleaning anytime we needed service. We travel often and have been around to a lot of great resorts, I can honestly say the service was up there as one of the top spots. I told the staff if they can add pizza to lunch menu and allow breakfast to be ordered a little sooner, then the place would be perfect. It pretty much is already but that’s just traveling with kids they definitely want their pizza sooner than 4pm lol."

"The Mauna Lani is really a perfect hotel with a strong sense of how we live these days -- lots of room for everyone to find their only place and also be together. The physical setting is gorgeous, the food is great, and the staff (many of them who have been there for decades) is welcoming."

"This was the most amazing experience and the best vacation my wife and I have ever experienced. Staff was the friendliest. The views and ocean were mind blowing. This place is beautiful . The lobby open air breeze is so comfortable and refreshing. Enjoyed just sitting relaxing drinking my Chai tea latte and eating my breakfast burrito both bought right in the market . Slept with balcony doors wide open listening to the ocean waves and woke up to birds chirping and palm trees blowing… so surreal…everything first class . The golfing… the morning canoe ride.. I could write a novel about this wonderful experience….All aloha."
