PB hotel design editorial

Terraced into the jungled hillside above Hanalei Bay on Kauai's north shore, where the Na Pali cliffs dissolve into the Pacific on one horizon and the impossibly green Hanalei valley rises on the other, 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay makes a persuasive argument that the most powerful design move available on this island is simply to get out of nature's way. The property, which carries SH Hotels' biophilic brand philosophy to one of Hawaii's most protected coastlines, cascades down its site in stepped terraces draped with living green walls, the massing softened by tropical planting until the building and the hillside become difficult to separate from above. Inside, the interiors draw from a palette of raw plaster walls, light-toned timber millwork, woven rattan lampshades, and hand-thrown ceramic vessels — materials that carry the atmosphere of a carefully considered private residence rather than a resort. Guest rooms frame the bay and the Hanalei mountains through wide picture windows, with low platform beds, linen throws, and handcrafted furniture constructed from reclaimed and sustainably sourced wood grounding each space in tactile warmth. The bar and lounge open entirely to the ocean through folding glass walls, cedar slatted ceilings overhead, macramé and carved stone detailing on the walls behind. At the beach level, the lagoon pool is edged in volcanic basalt rock — a material choice that acknowledges the island's geological origins rather than papering over them.

"The hotel was amazingly beautiful. Everywhere you walk it’s a stunning view. The staff was excellent as well, especially Kalani, who’s part of the pool staff, he helped me create a bouquet of flowers from around the property and helped construct a vase out of a coconut. He single handledly made my experience so much better. I’m getting married here and his special touch helped make our special trip even better."

"Paradise. Seriously, this resort will melt your stress away in record time. We come to Kauai often and after a dinner at Wellina Terrace on our last visit we decided we had to stay at the property on our next visit. It’s been nothing short of perfection. The staff, the beautiful bay, the delicious food. We are in heaven. So happy to stay and enjoy Hanalei bay from this beautiful spot."

"I read the reviews before the trip and was a little concerned about the feedback from some travelers. However, our stay was fantastic. We stayed 3 nights (room 702) and absolutely loved every minute, The service was very attentive and quick. We booked with Amex Platinum card, so we had free breakfast and additional $500 in hotel credits - which we used for our meals. The hotel's food is very good and has a great variety for vegetarians. We enjoyed the adult infinity pool a lot - breathtaking views of the mountains. Yes, it rained a bit during our stay - but this is Napali coast, the rainiest part of the island, so I am not sure what people are expecting. One day it rained a lot, but other days it was sunny all day with very brief drizzle, so we went on a hike. I would do it again in a heartbeat. The dramatic views of the hotel are unmatched. We loved it and we want to come back again soon. The view of the emerald mountains every morning is simply unforgettable. It felt like we were in the Lord of the Rings movie, every day."
