PB hotel design editorial

Terraced into the jungled hillside above Hanalei Bay on Kauai's north shore, where the Na Pali cliffs dissolve into the Pacific on one horizon and the impossibly green Hanalei valley rises on the other, 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay makes a persuasive argument that the most powerful design move available on this island is simply to get out of nature's way. The property, which carries SH Hotels' biophilic brand philosophy to one of Hawaii's most protected coastlines, cascades down its site in stepped terraces draped with living green walls, the massing softened by tropical planting until the building and the hillside become difficult to separate from above. Inside, the interiors draw from a palette of raw plaster walls, light-toned timber millwork, woven rattan lampshades, and hand-thrown ceramic vessels — materials that carry the atmosphere of a carefully considered private residence rather than a resort. Guest rooms frame the bay and the Hanalei mountains through wide picture windows, with low platform beds, linen throws, and handcrafted furniture constructed from reclaimed and sustainably sourced wood grounding each space in tactile warmth. The bar and lounge open entirely to the ocean through folding glass walls, cedar slatted ceilings overhead, macramé and carved stone detailing on the walls behind. At the beach level, the lagoon pool is edged in volcanic basalt rock — a material choice that acknowledges the island's geological origins rather than papering over them.

"I was not actually staying at Hotel One. I am staying at the resort next-door, but I visited the spa. I had an excellent 80 minute Lomi Lomi massage with Kauwe. She was great -highly skilled and very personable."

"The view, vibe, and amenities here justify the price tag and a 5-star review. The view is stunning, and clearly the focus of the hotel, the vibe is very lush and natural, and the amenities of the pool, the free activities, and the two nicer restaurants are amazing. Sadly, the service and the poolside restaurant are a 1-star The poolside restaurant is extremely disappointing. We paid $30+ for a pizza that you could get at MOD pizza, and $40+ for pasta that had chicken on it that was clearly microwaved. We did not go back. The service, for how much we paid and what the hotel claims to be, is very disappointing. We had to ask the concierge multiple times to ensure we had a booking, and they will not book you activities that are not at the hotel. The day before check out, we asked for help with our bags and for our car to be ready for our early flight, and neither happened. Our bag service never showed up, and we had to clamor around for the valet to get our car, something we paid $55 a night for. Not very fun with an early flight to catch and not what we pay for. When we brought it to the front desk attention, they said sorry for the delay and that was that. This is a beautiful hotel with a fantastic view and pools, but don’t expect the high end 5 star service."

"Hotel room was ok, bad lighting and needs remodeling. Grounds are beautiful. Sandbox bar is what made our stay amazing!! Staff (especially Kyle), made us give this resort a 5 star rating!!"

"1 Hotel Hanalei Bay is the kind of secluded escape that makes Kauai feel almost otherworldly. Perched above the water with views that don’t seem real, the property embraces the slow island rhythm that’s meant to be savored. The location isn’t walkable to restaurants or attractions but with scenery like this, you won’t feel the need to go anywhere. A car is helpful for exploring, yet once you arrive, the hotel quickly becomes its own world. Upon pulling up, the Bell Staff were full of smiles & consistently helpful throughout the trip. For the actual check-in, we were welcomed into a lounge of couches where a team member appears with a cocktail, setting an immediate tone of relaxed luxury. The brand’s signature greenery and indoor/outdoor design is everywhere, with both restaurants open to sweeping mountain and ocean views that make the entire property feel connected to the landscape. Our room was calm, comfortable, and framed by stunning scenery. A standout touch was the filtered water tap in the bathroom, perfect for filling the reusable bottles. Housekeeping was also excellent throughout the stay. Dining was consistently strong. The breakfast buffet at 1 Kitchen was exceptional, and Welina Terrace delivered great sushi and unforgettable sunset views. The adults only infinity pool was another highlight, peaceful and beautifully positioned. Service across the property was genuinely warm, with bartender Ryan at 1 Kitchen standing out for his friendly, attentive energy. The views deserve a final mention. They’re the kind you try to keep capturing, before realizing they’re better experienced than photographed (a realization made after many attempts)."

"Wonderful stay at this property. Literally a million dollar view of the mountains and bay from every angle. Rooms were spacious and well kept. Gyn was truly state of the art. A few staff shoutout: Harry for the speedy check-in, Michael for the warm welcoming with the lei and valet, Darrin at 1 Kitchen for the birthday surprise, Aiden for the quick and attentive service at 1 Kitchen, Bruno for the amazing stretch classes including 1 Stretch but especially myofascial release class that felt really good (highly recommend this one), and Derek at concierge for getting everything we needed during our stay. Everyone on staff was so nice, always greeting us aloha. Felt like family. Thank you all!"
