PB hotel design editorial

Sitting on five beachfront acres along Wailea's Mokapu Beach, where the West Maui Mountains frame the horizon on one side and Molokini crater rises from the channel on the other, the Andaz Maui at Wailea opened in 2013 as one of the more considered attempts to bring a contemporary design sensibility to the Hawaiian resort typology. The architecture, by Dallas-based HKS, arranges low-rise wings — none exceeding five floors — in a crescent configuration that preserves sightlines through the property to the ocean, the dark-toned vertical screen cladding visible in the exterior images giving the glass towers a depth and shadow that softens what might otherwise register as generic resort massing. Interior design by Champalimaud brought a material palette that earns its Pacific address without leaning on tiki cliché: warm koa-toned millwork, travertine-style stone flooring, leather bench ends with a mid-century profile, and pendant shades woven from natural fiber thread through the 297 rooms and suites. The open-air dining pavilion, sheltered beneath an exposed steel pergola frame, frames a pair of large organic bronze sculptures against the channel sunset in a way that feels genuinely considered rather than decorative. Across the terraced pool landscape, frangipani and plumeria push through stone coping, and the curved infinity edge of the main pool reflects the low hotel wings at dusk — a geometry that turns the building into part of the waterscape rather than its backdrop.

"An awesome anniversary and birthday celebration here for a week. We had a good size ocean view room with a mini fridge ( two soft drinks per day) and Nespresso coffee and two maui chips and Hawaiian cookies daily. The resort is beautiful. The 5-6 pools are awesome. Food menu is limited and expensive, but we had daily resort credit which yook care of it. Staff are friendliest ever. Kari at Buffett breakfast was so attentive and friendly. There was a hiccup during our stay and Kodi took care if it. Will definitely go back. Mahalo Andaz Maui for a great memory! ❤️❤️❤️❤️"

"The Andaz is a beautiful resort. The amenities were great. The food was amazing! All of the staff were super kind and helpful. Our biggest concern is that we purchased our room through Amex travel. With our booking we were to receive $750 resort credit. We confirmed this credit with Amex before we departed for our travel. Upon arrival Andaz informed us we would not receive this credit. We were told that we had received a discount on our booking-this was not reported on our booking. We contacted Amex and they let us know they would work with Andaz to resolve the issue. Ultimately the issue was not resolved and we were not granted the promotional credit. I am leaving this review because this promotion is still available-In fact it was still available at the time of our check-in. I want others to know the credit will not be honored. Unfortunately this ultimately impacted our honeymoon. During a time where we should have been relaxing and enjoying our vacation we were having conversations around finances and sacrificing experiences."

"Definitely a 5 Star resort. Entire staff treated us as if we were special. The only problem is the trip involves 11 hours in the air plus going through multiple time zones. Otherwise it would be a yearly experience."

"We loved this resort. The location and service were both fabulous and the hotel is stunning. We also enjoyed the delicious daily breakfast buffet. The hotel brings in local craftsmen every day and we'd like to give a shout out to the wonderful woodcarver, Tupounaki. He is very talented and his work is gorgeous. Tupounaki is also very kind, sweet, and accommodating; we will treasure the custom-made souvenir we purchased from him as a special remembrance of our trip."

"There are many beautiful properties in Wailea - what brings me back is the people and service. I wanted to give a shout out to Karmea’s warmth at the front desk, and especially JD, who met us in our room with our bags and took the time to give us great tips for our stay. It was like having a friend greet us! We were lucky enough to have him take us on their courtesy car later on, so we could thank him. David at Ka’Ana Kitchen and Callie at Morimoto’s, as well as Mary Joyce, one of the housekeeping staff, all deserve recognition and appreciation as well. Our experiences with the drivers were excellent - they are an amazingly efficient workforce while maintaining professionalism and friendliness. The ocean view rooms are beautiful and the beach access is convenient, and of course the Pacific with the islands as backdrop are gorgeous. We did have one lackluster/not-great interaction with concierge (ironically). Her attention was definitely on her screen and not on us, but she did help us book our excursion. (Told us the wrong time, but the email confirmation was great bc the time is in writing). Again, our experiences overall were overwhelmingly positive. I would definitely consider a return! Mahalo to all those who work so hard and made us feel so welcome!"
