PB hotel design editorial

Sitting on five beachfront acres along Wailea's Mokapu Beach, where the West Maui Mountains frame the horizon on one side and Molokini crater rises from the channel on the other, the Andaz Maui at Wailea opened in 2013 as one of the more considered attempts to bring a contemporary design sensibility to the Hawaiian resort typology. The architecture, by Dallas-based HKS, arranges low-rise wings — none exceeding five floors — in a crescent configuration that preserves sightlines through the property to the ocean, the dark-toned vertical screen cladding visible in the exterior images giving the glass towers a depth and shadow that softens what might otherwise register as generic resort massing. Interior design by Champalimaud brought a material palette that earns its Pacific address without leaning on tiki cliché: warm koa-toned millwork, travertine-style stone flooring, leather bench ends with a mid-century profile, and pendant shades woven from natural fiber thread through the 297 rooms and suites. The open-air dining pavilion, sheltered beneath an exposed steel pergola frame, frames a pair of large organic bronze sculptures against the channel sunset in a way that feels genuinely considered rather than decorative. Across the terraced pool landscape, frangipani and plumeria push through stone coping, and the curved infinity edge of the main pool reflects the low hotel wings at dusk — a geometry that turns the building into part of the waterscape rather than its backdrop.

"Upon arrival we were not greeted by anyone. We then had to huff our luggage up to the lobby where we waited 20 min to check in. A common theme was that the service was not as you’d expect for $1k/night rooms. Very slow and not attentive. Access is not great for handicap or strollers so be warned. Most rooms have an ocean view but loud pool equipment really killing the vibe. Hotel doesn’t have the IT factor you’d hope for the price. Food was just ok and service was slow. Pricey!"

"We spent 6 nights in a pool side suite at the Andaz Maui at Wailea Resort (a generous upgrade) and to sum it up in a single word...AMAZING! The hotel, grounds, and setting on the beach were all gorgeous. The buffet breakfast had so many stations and options...it was a great way to start the day. We thoroughly enjoyed the beach experiences...outrigger, SUP, and kayaking...and appreciated that the beach staff always made sure we had lounge chairs with umbrella shade for beach lounging. But what made this experience over the top is the staff. From our first step on property to our final goodbye, the staff was welcoming, generous, provided exceptional service, and never once made us feel like our questions or requests were a burden or an interruption to their day. This was our third visit to Maui, but our first to the Andaz...we WILL be back to stay again."

"Stayed here on points as a Globalist and honestly it was one of those stays where everything just went right. Got free valet, breakfast, resort fees waived, and then they upgraded us to a villa, which I was not expecting at all. The front desk people were so nice and actually helpful, not just going through the motions. Breakfast blew me away too. The buffet had way more options than I figured it would and I genuinely couldn't find anything I didn't like. We hit the beach a few times and it was easy to get to, super clean, and the water was really clear. The villa was big and they had it stocked with water, Seagram's sodas, and chips, plus a nice Bosch coffee maker which was a nice touch. But the thing I keep thinking about is the shower. It was huge, had a rain shower head, and the water pressure was excellent. Would 100% come back."

"We got a 4 bedroom villa at the Andaz, and it really did exceed all expectations. The housekeeping was amazing, the servers were amazing, and breakfast every day was so filling I probably gained several pounds! We also had dinner at Morimoto, which was excellent. There's just nothing better than sitting on your balcony with a full ocean view. I really can't recommend the Andaz enough if you're looking for a large villa with a full kitchen for you entire family!"

"This is the best property in Maui. The staff is incredible. You don’t get lost in the crowd. The staff remembers who you are. The atmosphere is perfect. The food is delicious. The pools ( and there are five) meet everyone’s needs."
