PB hotel design editorial

Wailea's southwestern shoreline, where Maui's leeward coast curves toward the silhouette of Kaho'olawe on the horizon, gave Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea its defining orientation when the property opened in 1990. Killingsworth Stricker Lindgren Wilson & Associates designed the low-rise complex to cascade toward the Pacific in a series of terraced forms — columns, coffered ceilings, and open-air colonnades that borrow from Hawaiian plantation architecture without replicating it literally. The effect is closer to a Mediterraneanized tropicalism than to anything purely vernacular, the cream-painted concrete and travertine-tiled hardscape pulling the eye steadily seaward across the 15-acre grounds and two crescent-shaped pools toward Wailea Beach. A comprehensive renovation completed around 2013 brought the 380 rooms into a quieter, more calibrated register. The interiors now work in a palette of warm sand, dark walnut, and natural linen — diamond-patterned wool-blend carpet underfoot, upholstered headboards set into textured wall panels, dark-framed louvered shutters controlling the Pacific light that floods every lanai. Woven rattan armchairs in the open-sided dining terraces, set among royal palms and ti plants, continue the same material logic outdoors: natural fiber, dark wood, cream stone. The landscape, planted with coconut palms, birds-of-paradise, and cascading bougainvillea framing a tiered fountain as the central axis, channels the grounds into a coherent procession from building to beach.

"This is one of my favorite hotels. Rooms are very well decorated and spacious . Bathrooms are large. Only one area that needs perhaps needs update are toilets . Very very low."

"I really enjoyed the personal touch and attention paid by the staff at the front desk, valet and Duo and Ferraro restaurants. This coupled with a clean and inviting environment made for a truly relaxing anniversary with my Bae at the Four Seasons in Wailea Maui! Hope to return soon. Mahalo"

"What an amazing trip to FS Maui! The resort is gorgeous and the beach is now one of my favorite beaches. We loved the complimentary outrigger excursion. We saw a mom, dad, and baby whale. They were breaching and it was one of the most magical experiences of my life! We were there in mid-February. There is a path that takes you along the shoreline past other resorts. It's beautiful to walk at sunset and we saw a lot of whales in the distance. Beach: The ocean water is so clear and the temperature was great. We also did paddle-boarding and kayaking. The resort offers a complimentary yoga class in the morning which was serene. Pools: They were so busy, I actually didn't spend any time at them. I tried the adult pool twice but there was a waitlist. I wish there was a third pool that was not as crowded. Pickleball: So great that it was complimentary and the courts were very nice. My kids and I spent a lot of time there. Breakfast buffet: LOVED it! I loved that they offered a different seafood dish daily: octopus salad, tuna poke, shrimp cocktail. Also, their taro rolls were delicious and their pastries were amazing. This was definitely our favorite dining at the resort. The rooms: Beautiful and clean. I especially loved the sound system in the bathroom with Hawaiian music playing. All in all - a wonderful trip and I would highly recommend!!"

"I really wanted to enjoy this vacation, but ultimately came away just feeling ripped off. We originally had a 1 bedroom ocean view suite that cost around $5k per night. It was me, my husband and our 2 teenage kids, so we needed either two rooms or a suite with 2 bathrooms. We booked late due to travel changes so we went with the suite to ensure we were together. A few days before we arrived we received multiple calls from them asking if we wanted to upgrade our room to a 1 bedroom ocean front suite. They made it sound spectacular, so we took the upgrade at an additional $3k cost as it came with some other minor benefits (free laundry and parking). What a disappointment. Our room was on the Spago side of the resort one floor up from the presidential suite. Our ocean front view was basically the sunshades of the presidential suite, then the extensive garden for the presidential suite, then the roof of Spago and then, finally, a small view of the ocean obstructed by palms. Incredibly sad for $3k extra. Plus the design of the building with huge columns meant you felt incredibly closed in. The whole resort could do with a face lift. They are currently working on multiple spaces so there was a lot of construction. No discount provided for this disruption. The spa was also in temporary space and that was just sad. It was just empty guest rooms. No shower facilities to use and you changed in a curtain cubicle. Again, no discount but I was told multiple times how the disruption is worth it because the new spa will be amazing. That’s great for whoever experiences it, but it did not help me at all. The whole resort felt claustrophobic. It is very narrow, so views are limited. Also the pool areas are very small and surrounded by cabanas so you do not actually see the ocean from the pools unless you pay an extra $1,250 per day for ocean view cabanas. Last problem was that we had bad weather for a few days. This meant that Ferraros was closed. This really highlighted the limited food options and bad weather options at the resort. All you could do was order room service. Now the staff were lovely. I just think the resort is dated and is configured badly. The real kicker is the crazy cost. This place is riding on its White Lotus notoriety and charging twice what other similar resorts would charge. I would not come back here again. The Four Seasons on Oahu is much better for less money."
