PB hotel design editorial

From the upcountry slopes of Maui's Wailea district, where the land drops away toward Maalaea Bay with Kahoolawe and Molokini visible across open water, a scattered village of low-slung hipped-roof bungalows arranged across roughly fifteen acres gives Hotel Wailea a quality rare in Hawaiian resort design: genuine seclusion without the scale of a conventional resort complex. Originally built in 1978 and operating for decades as a timeshare property, the hotel was reimagined as an adults-only boutique retreat — just 72 suites spread across freestanding cottage structures that sit deep within tropical plantings dense enough to absorb almost all architectural evidence of neighboring development. The interiors, refreshed in recent renovation work, move between two registers visible in the images: guest rooms finished in travertine-block feature walls with live-edge walnut headboards, saffron-yellow throws, and banana-leaf print cushions that bring garden color inside, and living spaces furnished with woven rattan chairs, carved-detail console tables, and coral and sky-blue accent cushions opened onto private lanais framing the channel view. The bar and lounge area centers on a dramatic rotunda structure — its radial timber ceiling lit from within, local volcanic stone columns open to the trade winds on three sides — with raspberry velvet lounge chairs and a teal banquette lending the space a warmth that feels closer to a private club than a hotel bar.

"My wife and I stayed at Hotel Wailea over the MLK weekend to celebrate our anniversary. This was our fourth visit to Maui, and our first time staying here. We were thoroughly impressed and would absolutely return. Location The hotel is located in Wailea, perched on a hilltop about a mile inland from the beach. While it’s not beachfront, the elevated setting offers beautiful views of the Pacific and a much quieter, more private atmosphere than the large resorts along the shore. The complimentary shuttle service is excellent — quick, reliable, and able to drop you off anywhere in Wailea. We never waited more than a few minutes. Room All accommodations are one-bedroom suites, which immediately sets this property apart. We booked a garden-view suite and loved the peaceful outlook over a grassy meadow. The suite was spacious, well appointed, and very comfortable. A nice and increasingly rare touch: the minibar snacks and drinks were complimentary. Ambience The overall ambience can be summed up in three words: tranquil tropical oasis. Lush landscaping, open green spaces, and subtle evening lighting create a serene and romantic environment. As an adults-only resort, it feels calm and unhurried — perfect for couples or solo travelers seeking a quieter experience. Dining Hotel Wailea has two dining venues. Birdcage is a bar and Japanese restaurant with stunning sunset views over the ocean. The Restaurant offers à la carte breakfast and a fine-dining tasting menu for dinner. We had breakfast there twice and were very impressed by both the quality of the food and the service. The ricotta pancakes were a standout. Service Service throughout our stay was outstanding — attentive, warm, and well balanced. The staff were always available when needed but never intrusive. For our anniversary, they surprised us with floral decorations and a handwritten card signed by the staff, which was a genuinely thoughtful and memorable gesture. Beach Access Although the hotel is not beachfront, guests can be shuttled to any of Wailea’s beaches, with beach chairs, towels, and umbrellas provided. You do need to carry the chairs and umbrella from the parking area to the beach. The hotel also offers a full-service beach picnic experience, which must be reserved in advance. Final Thoughts Hotel Wailea is a peaceful, refined alternative to Maui’s large beachfront resorts. It’s ideal for a romantic getaway or a relaxing adults-only escape. If you value privacy, excellent service, and a calm atmosphere, this property is truly special. Highly recommended."

"i have never stayed at a more luxurious hotel. The 3 rooms of our suite were enormous. The hotel provided leis at check in, soda and water in the room, wonderful shower products, and thick toilet paper. The breakfasts were fantastic and the service phenomenal. The fixed 3 course meal at dinner was one of the best meals I've ever had. This smaller adults only property is perfect for a honeymoon or an anniversary vacation. They have an 82 page wine list. They are not located on the beach, which is actually a blessing. It is very quiet here. I loved just sitting on the porch and watching the birds while my spouse golfed just down the street. Wonderful resort. The only problem is that the self parking spots are ridiculously tight and maddening to try to get into the car. The employee parking spots are larger. I think that they were recently repainted and made smaller. Maybe make the general manager park here so they can see how bad the parking is."

"If you are waffling between hotels, please take this as your sign to decide on Hotel Wailea. My husband and I first visited in 2019 for our honeymoon. 6 years later, we came back and had another truly spectacular experience. If anything, the hotel had elevated its hospitality. Great location, adults only(!!!) with the most attentive staff and bell/valet service you can imagine. True attention to detail on every level. The suites are comfortable and beautiful, with lovely amenities. Couldn’t recommend enough."

"We stayed here to celebrate our anniversary. This was our second time staying at the beautiful Hotel Wailea, and it definitely won’t be our last. The customer service here is top notch; everyone is attentive and friendly, from the valets and the groundskeepers to the servers in the restaurant and the staff at the front desk. There are subtle touches that you might not notice while you’re staying here, like our housekeeper Carina leaving extra coffee pods for us without us asking her to do so. Shannan, Keoni, Angie and everyone at the front desk are wonderful, so kind and caring, always greeting us with smiles. When you get to your next hotel, you’ll think of those thoughtful, kind moments. We highly recommend staying here!"

"My wife and I stayed at the Hotel Wailea for a week, and loved our experience there. It will be the hotel that we compare all other hotels to going forward. It's hard to know where to start. The property is a lush oasis of serenity, where the only noises we heard during our stay were those of the many different birds in the surrounding trees. You are a little bit away from the ocean here, but still get amazing views from the rooms and restaurants. Being an adult only resort is a huge bonus for couples wanting to escape for a nice relaxing vacation. They think of every guest need, with things like electric bikes, complimentary concierge (or self parking is also available), sunscreen pump station at the pool, a general number you can text anytime you need anything sent to the room, and so much more. There are two restaurants on property (The Birdcage and The Restaurant) They were both amazing. We had a dinner at each, and breakfast at the restaurant each morning. Some standouts at breakfast were the coconut chia pudding in a half papaya, and the crab eggs benny. The fresh ahi options at dinner were so good, and the service was never less than excellent. The best part was they took care of my wife's dietary needs without any issue. My wife has celiac disease and is very allergic to gluten. She had tons of safe gluten free options for every meal, and loved every bite she had. We tried out a couple of restaurants at the bigger resorts in the area, and each time we came back at night to the Hotel Wailea, we took a deep breathe, and remarked how glad we were to have booked there. Really hoping we are lucky enough to return in the future!"
