PB hotel design editorial

From the upcountry slopes of Maui's Wailea district, where the land drops away toward Maalaea Bay with Kahoolawe and Molokini visible across open water, a scattered village of low-slung hipped-roof bungalows arranged across roughly fifteen acres gives Hotel Wailea a quality rare in Hawaiian resort design: genuine seclusion without the scale of a conventional resort complex. Originally built in 1978 and operating for decades as a timeshare property, the hotel was reimagined as an adults-only boutique retreat — just 72 suites spread across freestanding cottage structures that sit deep within tropical plantings dense enough to absorb almost all architectural evidence of neighboring development. The interiors, refreshed in recent renovation work, move between two registers visible in the images: guest rooms finished in travertine-block feature walls with live-edge walnut headboards, saffron-yellow throws, and banana-leaf print cushions that bring garden color inside, and living spaces furnished with woven rattan chairs, carved-detail console tables, and coral and sky-blue accent cushions opened onto private lanais framing the channel view. The bar and lounge area centers on a dramatic rotunda structure — its radial timber ceiling lit from within, local volcanic stone columns open to the trade winds on three sides — with raspberry velvet lounge chairs and a teal banquette lending the space a warmth that feels closer to a private club than a hotel bar.

"Each year, we travel to a special destination to celebrate our anniversary, and this year we celebrated our 20th at Hotel Wailea. It was, without question, our favorite resort we’ve ever stayed at. From check in to check out, every aspect of our experience was exceptional. The resort itself is stunning, quiet, peaceful, and perfectly situated. What truly made our stay so memorable, however, was the outstanding service provided by every single team member we encountered. We especially want to thank Marc for his exceptional hospitality and warm welcome, as well as Kristal, Jackie, Kai, Matt, Christian, Gustavo, and Libby at The Restaurant. Each of you made us feel genuinely cared for and created an anniversary celebration we’ll never forget. We were honestly heartbroken to leave, not just because of the beautiful resort, but because of the wonderful people who made it feel so special. We can’t wait to return to this magical place. Mahalo for an unforgettable stay."

"Overall, we loved staying at Hotel Wailea and would definitely return. The Highlights: The room was clean, spacious, and quiet, with comfortable beds and pretty much everything we needed for our stay. We loved the low-key, relaxing pool area. Even though the hotel isn't right on the water, the hillside views are beautiful, and the location is very convenient to gorgeous beaches and great dining. The Hiccup: We had no hot water in our shower for the first two days. While the front desk sent maintenance quickly after our first text, the issue wasn't resolved, and our second text went unanswered. It took a visit to the front desk and a second maintenance team to get it fixed. While we understand these things happen, we expected better service—specifically, a follow-up from the staff to ensure the issue was resolved, and perhaps a small gesture acknowledging the inconvenience of taking cold showers and waiting around for repairs."

"We had a great 5 night stay at Hotel Wailea. The hotel grounds were gorgeous & our room was a spacious partial ocean suite that had everything we needed. Being a bit of a walk from the beach was not an issue for us- there is free parking at the beach or a hotel shuttle can take you (we did this because the hill back from the beach is quite steep). The hotel “shuttle” is a fleet of range rovers that will pick you up and drop you off anywhere in the Wailea area. They came immediately whenever we texted we needed a ride and the drivers were all great. We had food and drinks at the pool- was all tasty. We also had drinks at the bird cage one night and they were excellent. We would definitely come back!"

"Located in beautiful Wailea the suites are spacious and welcoming and face the ocean. A large lanai allows for enjoying the outdoors. Each suite has special amenities, and the hotel staff makes every effort to accommodate one’s requests. The suites are serviced every day and always well maintained."

"On the good side, large bedrooms/suites, quiet as it is adults only, the pool sunbeds were easily available and there was friendly service. On the less good, average food that was nothing special, breakfast and dinner were both. lukewarm and slow to arrive, the attention to detail is lacking for a hotel changing c$2000 a night, the pool team were more interested in chatting to each other than serving customers, we had problems with the tech and phone connections in our room, no clear and comfortable bar area to relax in and communication was mixed between the valet and reception and with our travel agent. We are lucky enough to stay in great hotels around the world and this could be one of them but it lacks the professional and standards to make it so."
