PB hotel design editorial

Perched on the lava-rock coastline of West Maui where the Pacific stretches toward Molokai on the horizon, Montage Kapalua Bay opened in 2014 on a site that longtime visitors to the islands will remember as the former Ritz-Carlton Kapalua — a property that briefly closed following earthquake damage and was comprehensively reimagined rather than simply repaired. The architectural language that emerged from that reinvention draws on the vernacular of Hawaiian plantation architecture, most visibly in the porte-cochère, where massive exposed koa-toned timber beams rise into a steeply pitched gabled roof, the structural expressiveness giving the arrival sequence genuine ceremony. The resort's 24 acres accommodate 56 oceanfront suites and residences spread across low-rise buildings that step down through dense tropical plantings — heliconia, plumeria, ti leaf — toward a series of interconnected pools edged in dark basalt stone quarried to echo the volcanic landscape beneath. The interiors work within a restrained coastal palette — cream wool carpeting, louvered cabinetry in warm teak tones, linen drapery framing deep-silled windows oriented toward the water. The more elevated villa accommodations introduce four-poster beds in dark hardwood, patterned geometric rugs laid over rich mahogany floors, and original artwork referencing Hawaiian and pan-Pacific traditions. Where many Hawaiian resort interiors default to generic tropical gestures, these rooms carry a quieter confidence, letting the frame of coconut palms and open ocean through mahogany-trimmed glass do most of the atmospheric work.

Montage Kapalua Bay Reviews

"I booked 4 nights at the Montage (Now named The Resort at Kapalua Bay) Unit #1205. The resort is a joke. TERRIBLE SERVICE. Not kidding you, when we pulled up to Valet our car, the lady came and opened my wife's door on the passenger side and said, "What are you here for?" Immediately. No "Hey! Welcome." nothing. Super rude demeaner in general. Moving onto the amenities, they are transitioning from the Montage managing the property to now Marriott. Someone in Marriott decided in their infinite wisdom to make the transition happen over a week. This was a disaster. Pools and grounds seriously understaffed and dirty. The spa couldn't take appointments because they couldn't tell you when they were booked because of their system being down. You couldn't room charge anything because of the same system, so you had to make sure you had a CC everywhere you went and keep the receipt if you get room credits. The room service food was ok but constantly got our orders wrong or missed things. We had 1 really great waitress that delivered food to our room. Talked to 5 other couples down at the pool and EVERY SINGLE ONE of them said exactly the same thing. Terrible service, terrible experience, nice view just wish it was an actual 5* resort like it claims. They offered to comp our parking. For reference I paid $3800 a night for my room. This place is a joke, save your money and book the Ritz or stay in Wailea at the Fairmont or 4 Seasons."

"From the first moment we stepped out of our car at the Montage Kapalua Bay, we felt relaxed and pampered. The setting is beautiful, as are the resort facilities. The food at Cane and Canoe (both breakfast and dinner) was some of the best we have had at Hawaiian resorts. The spa and fitness facilities are well appointed. All of the staff were friendly and helpful. We're looking forward to returning."

"The Amazin’ and the Meh — Montage Kapalua Bay ⭐⭐⭐ 3/5 Let me save you some time: Montage Kapalua Bay is a property that lives and dies by its location — and what a location it is. Thirty stunning acres perched above one of Maui’s most breathtaking bays, with snorkeling, sea turtles, and views that genuinely stop you in your tracks. If that’s all you need, book it. But at $5,000 a night, you’re entitled to expect more than scenery. Where It Shines The natural setting is legitimately world-class. Kapalua Bay is gorgeous, the grounds are beautifully landscaped, and waking up to those ocean views never gets old. This is Maui at its finest — the resort just happens to be sitting on top of it. Where It Falls Short The service gaps are hard to overlook at this price point. The spa was fully booked for both days I tried — not a single appointment available. The concierge rarely answered the phone, and when we needed a restaurant reservation at the on-property restaurant, multiple calls went unreturned. We were never added to the waitlist. The in-room experience felt surprisingly unfinished. Our room came with a fully equipped kitchen but zero guidance on where to buy groceries. Over six nights, we received six bottles of water. No snacks, no welcome amenities, no in-room speaker, and spotty WiFi with unclear login instructions. Room service was a minimum one-hour wait, and there were no quick grab-and-go options near the lobby — frustrating before an early activity. Lastly, for the guys, if you are not a size small or XXL skip the clothing offerings in the gift shop. Little conveniences that feel standard elsewhere were simply missing: no QR code for ordering, no Bluetooth speaker, and the Peloton wasn’t connected to the internet. The advertised Cadillac partnership? Never mentioned — we were pointed toward a local cab instead. Cane & Canoe has a beautiful setting, but the patio fire pits are positioned so low that you’re staring at shrubs rather than the ocean. A minor thing, but symbolic of the overall experience: so close to great, but not quite there. The Bottom Line This property was built over 20 years ago and it shows. The location remains the wow factor — the facilities haven’t kept pace. For what you’re spending, there are resorts in Maui that offer both the views and the service to match. Montage Kapalua Bay has the bones — it just needs a serious refresh in hospitality and amenities to justify the rate. Love the location. Would love it more if the experience matched it"

"We stayed at Montage Kapalua Bay from January 17–24, and the experience was outstanding from start to finish. The property itself is immaculate—beautifully maintained, peaceful, and perfectly integrated into the natural surroundings of Kapalua. Cleanliness across the resort was exceptional, from the guest rooms to the common areas and grounds. The service truly sets this property apart. Every staff member we encountered was warm, professional, and genuinely attentive without ever being intrusive. You can tell there is a strong culture of hospitality here—nothing felt forced, and everything felt thoughtful. Food and beverage exceeded expectations across the board. Each meal was consistently excellent, both in quality and presentation, with service that matched the caliber of the cuisine. Overall, this was a relaxing, refined, and memorable stay. Montage Kapalua delivers exactly what you hope for in a luxury resort: comfort, consistency, and exceptional service. We would absolutely return and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a first-class Maui experience."

"We stayed at 1205 in the unit 1 building. Most stunning views with a private grass yard elevated. We could see the beach at Kapalua bay at the left and out to Namalu bay to the right. The interior decor is beautiful too! This is our favorite location at the Montage!"
