PB hotel design editorial

Perched on the lava-rock coastline of West Maui where the Pacific stretches toward Molokai on the horizon, Montage Kapalua Bay opened in 2014 on a site that longtime visitors to the islands will remember as the former Ritz-Carlton Kapalua — a property that briefly closed following earthquake damage and was comprehensively reimagined rather than simply repaired. The architectural language that emerged from that reinvention draws on the vernacular of Hawaiian plantation architecture, most visibly in the porte-cochère, where massive exposed koa-toned timber beams rise into a steeply pitched gabled roof, the structural expressiveness giving the arrival sequence genuine ceremony. The resort's 24 acres accommodate 56 oceanfront suites and residences spread across low-rise buildings that step down through dense tropical plantings — heliconia, plumeria, ti leaf — toward a series of interconnected pools edged in dark basalt stone quarried to echo the volcanic landscape beneath. The interiors work within a restrained coastal palette — cream wool carpeting, louvered cabinetry in warm teak tones, linen drapery framing deep-silled windows oriented toward the water. The more elevated villa accommodations introduce four-poster beds in dark hardwood, patterned geometric rugs laid over rich mahogany floors, and original artwork referencing Hawaiian and pan-Pacific traditions. Where many Hawaiian resort interiors default to generic tropical gestures, these rooms carry a quieter confidence, letting the frame of coconut palms and open ocean through mahogany-trimmed glass do most of the atmospheric work.

"From arrival at the valet drive through to our departure 11 days later, everything during our stay was simply as close to perfection as a vacation can get. The property, amenities and accommodations were amazing! The property"

"My wife and I stayed at the resort from 4/30/26 to 5/6/26. We had a fantastic visit. We booked our trip prior to the management change from Montage to Marriott. They gave us notice of the change about a month before our trip and we decided to go through with it. I’m glad we did! We read some negative reviews from guests who were there early in the transition which concerned us, but we figured things would get straightened out. There is no doubt the resort is running smoothly now. Service was impeccable - the staff extremely professional, attentive and friendly. We gleaned from our conversations with them that most are long tenured. The food at all the restaurants was excellent. The grounds and rooms are absolutely spectacular. Our 3-bedroom unit was condo grade with very high end finishes – full kitchen, washer and dryer, 3.5 baths, 2 master rooms and a room with 2 full beds. There are two pool areas and the amount of pool space relative to the size of the resort (~only 145 rooms) is impressive. Plenty of pool side seating. The spa and fitness facility is also first class. My wife said her massage was one of the best she has ever had. One warning, there is some construction going on. It appears they are repairing exterior stucco. Looks like they have over 2/3 of the buildings done. At times there was some construction noise, but we didn’t find it overly obtrusive. Side note: We visited the Ritz Carlton for cocktails one evening. Although its very nice, we thought the views overall are not as good and the grounds are a notch below. The pool area seemed crowded. It has 400+ rooms for a comparably sized pool area. One off site restaurant recommendation – try Sansei Seafood for excellent sushi!"

"Our family was blown away with our exceptional experience. With some trepidation after learning the Montage we booked was transitioning to a different hotel brand/management company, and a few not so positive reviews during the transition, we were so pleasantly surprised. The view is unbeatable, the 3 bedroom villa accommodation was clean, comfortable, and honestly, luxurious. The staff was absolutely lovely - super helpful, very kind, and accommodating with all of our requests. The food was delicious and the pool area was really relaxing — it is setup in a way that allows you to have privacy while still being in a central area. The ocean and coastal trail are super convenient too. All in all it was a 5/5 and we will definitely be back. Shout out to Scott at the desk, Erick at the pool, Wade/Mark on the bell & valet staff. The entire staff was truly incredible. Thank you for everything! Highly recommend."

"Booked this hotel as a Montage in January via AMEX Fine Hotels & Resorts program - and prepaid. This was our 4th visit to the property, but we will not be back. The property transitioned to a Marriott in March. This should not be rated a FH&R anymore. The room was nice, but plenty of deferred maintenance/broken items, including no blinds in master bedroom. Broken dishwasher. Non-working A/C. Maintenance was prompt in coming around, but blinds never got installed. Even though we prepaid, there was nightly "resort fee" that was undisclosed at check-in. With tax, the resort fee and parking added $287 to the nightly rate. This is outrageous given the diminished level of service and amenities now that the property is a brandless Marriott. The location is good, and the beach is lovely, but you can save $$$$ by booking something at one of the properties one beach over at Napili."

"I booked 4 nights at the Montage (Now named The Resort at Kapalua Bay) Unit #1205. The resort is a joke. TERRIBLE SERVICE. Not kidding you, when we pulled up to Valet our car, the lady came and opened my wife's door on the passenger side and said, "What are you here for?" Immediately. No "Hey! Welcome." nothing. Super rude demeaner in general. Moving onto the amenities, they are transitioning from the Montage managing the property to now Marriott. Someone in Marriott decided in their infinite wisdom to make the transition happen over a week. This was a disaster. Pools and grounds seriously understaffed and dirty. The spa couldn't take appointments because they couldn't tell you when they were booked because of their system being down. You couldn't room charge anything because of the same system, so you had to make sure you had a CC everywhere you went and keep the receipt if you get room credits. The room service food was ok but constantly got our orders wrong or missed things. We had 1 really great waitress that delivered food to our room. Talked to 5 other couples down at the pool and EVERY SINGLE ONE of them said exactly the same thing. Terrible service, terrible experience, nice view just wish it was an actual 5* resort like it claims. They offered to comp our parking. For reference I paid $3800 a night for my room. This place is a joke, save your money and book the Ritz or stay in Wailea at the Fairmont or 4 Seasons."
