PB hotel design editorial

Facing Millennium Park from its Michigan Avenue address, the 1893 Venetian Gothic building that houses the Chicago Athletic Association Hotel was designed by Henry Ives Cobb as a gentlemen's club — a place where Chicago's industrialist elite played billiards and squash while the city rebuilt itself into an architectural argument. The facade, visible in the images, makes Cobb's sources explicit: terra-cotta tracery drawn from the Doge's Palace, paired lancet arches in pale limestone against deep red brick, an almost absurdly ornate street presence sandwiched between towers of glass and concrete. When Commune Hotels converted the building into a 241-room hotel in 2015, the challenge was to honor that institutional gravity without pickling it. Interior designer Roman and Williams rose to that brief with characteristic confidence. The 241 rooms preserve original plaster ceiling medallions worked into elaborate interlocking oval patterns, dark-stained wainscoting with carved Gothic detailing, and original terrazzo floors — all visible in the room shots — then layer in worn kilim rugs, tufted leather chaises, club armchairs in cognac leather, and Moorish-arched stone fireplaces that carry the warmth of a private library rather than the formality of a monument. The Game Room bar, set beneath a barrel-vaulted glass roof supported by exposed brick piers and steel lattice trusses, extends that sensibility toward something more communal: long communal timber tables, globe pendants strung overhead, the Chicago skyline framed beyond steel-sash windows.

About

It doesn’t get more Chicago than this 1893 icon of old-world design and good cheer. Originally home to an elite men’s club, the Chicago Athletic Association hotel building is an architectural gem dating back to 1893. Converted to a boutique hotel and urban playground of the same name in 2015, the property sports 240 guest rooms, seven bars & restaurants, the city's first Topgolf Swing Suite, and a downtown location central to Millennium Park, Lake Michigan, The Loop, and more. The Chicago Athletic Association hotel offers an artfully-restored historic stay along with some of the city’s most-lauded dining and drinking outlets. This hotel has received the 2022 Tripadvisor's Travelers Choice Award for consistently earning great reviews and also ranks within the 10% of properties on Tripadvisor.

"The Cindy’s and Drawing Room are run by separate companies not the hotel. This means they don’t see you as a hotel guest as they are mostly used by anyone coming into the complex. You’re not treated as a hotel guest in the drawing room. My daughter and partner were discouraged from having a relaxing drink when there was plenty of room. When they said they were guests they were shown to a table. My wife and I had the very same experience on our last evening. Loads of space and were guided to stable tucked in a desk corner. I refused this and said I was a guest in the hotel then they said “where would you like to sit?” This is simply not good enough when you are paying for two rooms for 4 nights. The only mirror for doing hair and makeup is on the back of the bathroom door. We asked for one as said they don’t supply mirrors. The seal on the shower door over the very deep bath tub/shower leaked so the floor floods with water. You’ll need extra towels!"

"Nice hotel. Rooms are small. Bed not great. Average hotel. Elevators very slow. Staff was nice. Food was good. Hotel is loud and not quiet enough if you want something more intimate. I would not stay here again."

"We really enjoyed our stay at the Chicago Athletic Association. The historical building is very beautiful and all the restaurants have great food. We were there for a family wedding and it was a perfect setting. Everything was handled really well and the location is so close to many great attractions. Well Done"

"I enjoyed the historical architecture and the way they were able to preserve the older fixtures where possible. My room was beautiful with wood and leather appointments and had a comfortable bed and a homey feel to it. The bathroom was completely modern with new tiles and shower that worked wonderfully - endless hot water. The sink area is small but carried over that historic look and feel with modern well-functioning faucet, mirror etc. The only negative is the view out the window is to an inside mechanical collection of vents. I closed the curtains the first day and enjoyed the luxurious feel of the heavy brown luxury velour cloth that blocked the sound and light nicely. No traffic noise when you have an inside room. This made sleeping much better than other hotels where you hear the street noise all the way up to the 40th floor! LOL"
