PB hotel design editorial

Facing Millennium Park from its Michigan Avenue address, the 1893 Venetian Gothic building that houses the Chicago Athletic Association Hotel was designed by Henry Ives Cobb as a gentlemen's club — a place where Chicago's industrialist elite played billiards and squash while the city rebuilt itself into an architectural argument. The facade, visible in the images, makes Cobb's sources explicit: terra-cotta tracery drawn from the Doge's Palace, paired lancet arches in pale limestone against deep red brick, an almost absurdly ornate street presence sandwiched between towers of glass and concrete. When Commune Hotels converted the building into a 241-room hotel in 2015, the challenge was to honor that institutional gravity without pickling it. Interior designer Roman and Williams rose to that brief with characteristic confidence. The 241 rooms preserve original plaster ceiling medallions worked into elaborate interlocking oval patterns, dark-stained wainscoting with carved Gothic detailing, and original terrazzo floors — all visible in the room shots — then layer in worn kilim rugs, tufted leather chaises, club armchairs in cognac leather, and Moorish-arched stone fireplaces that carry the warmth of a private library rather than the formality of a monument. The Game Room bar, set beneath a barrel-vaulted glass roof supported by exposed brick piers and steel lattice trusses, extends that sensibility toward something more communal: long communal timber tables, globe pendants strung overhead, the Chicago skyline framed beyond steel-sash windows.

"What a wonderful place and location. Close to everything, can walk or take Lyft to all the museums and sights. A bit cold when we went but could not be happier."

"They did a great job with the photography of this hotel but we paid $1,100 for my colleague and I to stay here to attend a conference - that rate was the room (which was ADA and we did not ask for that), on a low floor with no window so completely dark, and valeting two cars - nothing else. For that price we would've hoped for better amenities, a water bottle perhaps and better food and beverage outlets. Don't stay here, we'd only recommend to just visit the rooftop bar during a nice summer evening, but even so, don't have high expectations for the drinks or the food. Also, there isn't clear signage but check in is on the lobby floor. I would expect more from a Hyatt property."

"I would not stay at CAA again. It's a great location, but it wasn't to my tastes. The hot water hardly worked. I had slightly tepid water for most of my stay. I was informed by maintenace staff that "if lots of people use the water, it won't be as hot." That shouldn't be an excuse, this is a hotel! Did they expect guests want to take room temperature showers? Also, I used my Chase Sapphire card which includes CAA in their Edit collection. It comes with perks and amenities. Well, I was charged twice for breakfast and one was taken off (which it should be as it is complimentary breakfast at the restaurant or in room service), but it had an extra charge on it for in room dining and called it lunch. I only had my breakfast meal and I ordered it before the breakfast time closed. So I don't know why they charged it twice and kept one of the charges. They offer free vouches for champagne but it can't be used at Cindy's only in the drawing room or game room which I think is nonsensical. The rooms are strange in that not only the shower is cold, but the shower controls are on one side and the showerhead is on the other. When I tried to adjust the temperature, I'd have to step out from the water and be cold (again the water isn't hot!) as I kept trying to check if the water could get warmer. The minibar is fully stocked but guess what, you don't get a fridge yourself to store drinks or any food. Highlights were the concierge staff and the room service staff. Other than that though, it wasn't a comfortable stay. I want comfort when I go to a hotel. I didn't receive that at all at CAA."

"This hotel is in a perfect location for visiting Chicago. The history of the hotel added to the experience. The staff and our room over looking the park and lake made it a very special experience. The resturant on the roof, Cindy's has an outdoor space giving a great view of the City, the Lake and the Park."

"Loved our stay! We had the bi-level suite. Tons of room to spread out. Super clean, great beds, nice amenities! The staff was fantastic. Everyone was very friendly and helpful. The food was great and we loved the room service Shake Shack. We would stay here again."
