PB hotel design editorial

The collision of art and science — spelled out literally in the hotel's name, EMC2, Einstein's mass-energy equation recast as a design philosophy — gives this Streeterville property its animating idea, and architect Hartshorne Plunkard Architecture executed it with conviction. Opened in 2017 within a purpose-built thirteen-storey tower clad in deep blue-grey metal panels, Hotel EMC2 Autograph Collection announces itself at street level through a facade inlaid with faceted geometric brass forms and a large-scale painted mural, the entrance canopy carried on angular steel struts that bring structural expressionism right to the sidewalk. Inside, the 195 rooms developed by Simeone Deary Design Group set Calacatta marble shower enclosures behind steel-framed glass partitions, the bathroom opening directly into the sleeping area in a loft-like gesture that keeps the city views — Chicago's mid-rise Streeterville grid visible through floor-to-ceiling windows — in constant conversation with the room. Headboard murals drawn from expressionist and surrealist traditions, oval indigo rugs, brass trumpet-form floor lamps, and a circular vanity in dark walnut give each room the atmosphere of a collector's study rather than a standard hotel chamber. The ground-floor restaurant, Arami-inflected in its double-height volume, lines one wall with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves stacked with antiquarian volumes, suspends copper cookware above a white marble open kitchen counter, and places a full bar along the opposite run — a space that earns its own destination status independent of the rooms above.

"I had a wonderful stay at this hotel! The property was extremely clean, quiet, and well maintained. Every staff member I encountered was friendly, welcoming, and always greeted me whenever I entered or left the hotel, which made me feel right at home. I also loved the artwork throughout the hotel it gave the property a unique and modern feel. The location was another huge plus, with plenty of restaurants and attractions within walking distance."

"The hotel was amazing, we really enjoyed our stay there!! Jackie and Nia checked us in and took such good care of us! They upgraded our room, gave us great local recommendations for cocktails, and food! They also made sure we were properly hydrated, giving us waters as we came to and fro. We’ll be back!!"

"Great Location , 2min walk from Garretts Popcorn and 5min walk from Magnificent Mile. Mr. Chris at Guest Services was very Attentive and Friendly when we arrived. Hotel is eclectic but dated in some major areas. The faucet in my room had an annoying squeak when we ran the water. The air conditioner did not stay cool through out the night. It was warm 1st week of July. Expect sirens throughout the day. We called front desk 3X for a rob from the front desk that was Never delivered. I had to go down to the front desk to get a rob. Breakfast & Cocktails were delish. Bartenders and Dining Room Staff were Amazing. The TVs at the Bar were broken- and this was during FIFA. Overall, an average stay definitely not worth the price. The bots are cute."

"I have stayed at many Chicago hotels due to my business trips, and EMC2 is my favorite by far! Yes, the room is gorgeous (the shower is beautiful and the beds are comfy) but it was the staff that truly made the difference! Upon checking in, Jackie, was very kind and offered me slippers without me asking! I don't know how she knew I needed them, but it was a sign of great service and hospitality. The slippers are also soft and cushiony, not the cheap flat kind. This set the tone for my entire stay and I had a great time. The staff always said hi and asked me what I had planned for the day. Would 100% stay here again when I visit Chicago next. Thank you EMC2 staff!"

"EMC2 is hands down my favorite hotel in Chicago. I travel to Chicago almost every week for work, and after spending nearly half of the past two years in hotels, I can easily say EMC2 stands out. The hotel is beautiful, clean, modern, and consistently excellent. What keeps me coming back, though, are the people. If you’ve been to EMC2, you know Jackie. Jackie is one of those people who makes checking into a hotel feel like coming home. She greets every guest like an old friend, remembers familiar faces, and has a warmth that simply can’t be taught. I genuinely look forward to seeing her whenever I’m back in Chicago. As someone who spends nearly every week on the road, I don’t take that kind of hospitality for granted, and it’s exactly what keeps me coming back. This week, after my reservation unexpectedly fell through late at night, I called around 11:15PM. Jackie had everything resolved in less than 5 minutes, found me a room on the top floor, and completely turned around what had been an incredibly stressful evening. Jackie has a way of making the long days of business travel feel lighter and the mornings feel brighter. I hope she knows how much of a difference she makes. I also have to recognize Jason, who was working the late shift during a previous stay when I became unexpectedly sick. After I ordered crackers and Gatorade, he checked in on me and even sent ginger ale and a few other essentials to my room with LEO (their room delivery robot). It was such a thoughtful gesture, and it’s something I’ve never forgotten. Beautiful hotels are easy to find. People like Jackie and Jason are not. They are the reason EMC2 feels less like a hotel and more like a home away from home, and the reason I continue choosing it every time I’m in Chicago."
