PB hotel design editorial

Dark brick and steel-framed warehouse windows rise ten stories above Randolph Street in Chicago's West Loop, the massing of Nobu Hotel Chicago carrying the industrial memory of a neighborhood that spent a century as the city's produce market before becoming its most contested dining district. Completed in 2019 and designed by Rockwell Group — the New York practice that has shaped the visual identity of the Nobu brand across more than a dozen hotel properties worldwide — the 115-room building was purpose-built rather than converted, yet its punched-grid facade and warm bronze base lighting suggest something reclaimed rather than newly constructed, a deliberate nod to the loft buildings that defined the surrounding streetscape. Inside, the interiors sustain that dialogue between Japanese restraint and American industrial texture. Guest rooms pair exposed concrete ceilings with wide-plank oak floors, deep charcoal plaster accent walls, and low-profile platform beds with leather-trimmed bench ends — the furniture geometry echoing the black steel of the windows that frame direct sightlines toward the Willis Tower. The ground-floor Nobu Restaurant deploys the brand's characteristic material vocabulary: raked timber ceiling battens, veined stone sushi counters with terracotta-upholstered bar seating, and delicate shoji-screen partitions providing rhythm to the dining room without enclosing it. Above, a planted rooftop terrace with woven outdoor lounge furniture and mature specimen trees positions the hotel as a genuine contributor to the West Loop's rooftop culture rather than an afterthought to the restaurant below.

"We took our mini cavapoo Archie on vacation to Chicago and chose the NOBU because how dog friendly they were. And boy did they deliver! From entering Gino was so kind and amazing. Told us about all the spots that are dog friendly and the dog park near the hotel. Set up the room for Archie with a dog bed and dog water and food bowl. The service was amazing as well as how accommodating they were to Archie. They also allowed him at the main bar with us for a few cocktails! Thank you Gino, NOBU and the team for being amazing. We will be back!"

"I stayed at Nobu last week for a work trip, overall it was a 5-star experience! The rooms are very industrial yet cozy feeling, and the bed was very comfortable. I also liked how the room had a long bench/desk which was great for spreading my things out to get some work done there. The location is also great, tons of restaurants, bars, and coffee shops within the area. Although I didn't have too much time to explore a lot of places. Lastly the staff were all perfect. There was room and wind down service every day without asking, and everyone I interacted with was very professional and friendly!"

"We had an incredible stay at Nobu Hotel and truly felt taken care of from the moment we arrived. The entire staff was friendly, helpful, and extremely accommodating, but what stood out most was their wealth of knowledge and attention to detail. We were celebrating our anniversary, and they went above and beyond to make it feel special and memorable. A special shoutout to Derrick, the bellman—he was absolutely wonderful. His kindness, professionalism, and warm personality made a lasting impression on us. Thank you to the team at Nobu for creating such a meaningful and unforgettable experience. We can’t wait to come back!"

"We really enjoyed our stay at Nobu. Quality of service and excellent concierge. Special thanks to James Aryan for his hospitality. The hotel is beautifully designed and the beds were extremely comfortable. The rooms were spacious and extremely quiet most nights. I did have to use my sound machine on the weekends because of the honking noise of traffic below but that was nothing unknown for that area. I would recommend staying here as it’s in a perfect location for food and drinks."
