PB hotel design editorial

At the intersection of Michigan Avenue and Chicago's water tower district, where the Magnificent Mile transitions from retail grandeur toward the quieter residential north, a pale limestone tower designed by Lucien Lagrange and completed in 2000 gives Park Hyatt Chicago its architectural bearing — classical proportions and a warm Indiana limestone cladding that place it closer to the great Chicago building tradition than to the glass curtain-wall ambition dominating the same skyline. The building rises to 67 floors, with the hotel claiming the lower portion of a mixed-use tower that also houses private residences, and its terrace — visible in the images, set with white tensile canopies and looking south toward Lake Michigan — feels genuinely elevated, the city's grid spreading out like a circuit board below. A recent renovation brought the 198 guestrooms into a calmer, more considered register: wide-plank light oak flooring, upholstered linen headboards running floor-to-ceiling, window seats framing the surrounding architecture as if it were art, marble side tables, and pendant lamps in opaline glass casting a warm domestic light. The palette throughout is warm greige and parchment, a deliberate retreat from the older hotel's darker mahogany-and-cognac language. The restaurant interior, by contrast, carries more drama — clusters of drum pendants with gilded interiors suspended over black leather seating on chrome pedestals, floor-to-ceiling glazing drawing Michigan Avenue's density directly into the dining room.

"The Park Hyatt Chicago has a fantastic spot right on Michigan Avenue—super convenient for shopping, dining, and exploring the city. Matthew at the front desk was standout: friendly, proactive, and ensured I had everything I needed from check-in onward. The room itself is recently renovated (small but efficient), with an okay lake view, excellent rainfall shower, dual sinks, and Le Labo toiletries that were fine. Gym is compact but well-equipped with TechnoGym gear, and indoor pool is pretty small. Unfortunately, the noise was a deal-breaker. The walls are paper-thin—I heard hallway activity, closet hangers from neighbors, and random squeaks all night. On top of that, the constant sirens from fire trucks and ambulances pierced through, especially at night. Great property in many ways, but the poor sound insulation (inside and out) means I won’t be returning. Probably better for day-trippers or light sleepers who don’t mind earplugs/white noise machines."

"Overall like the Park Hyatt Chicago. Nice lobby, good sized, comfortable rooms and good service and housekeeping (though they did keep trying to do turndown just after we checked in at 4pm) and we wanted to hang in the room for a bit before heading out. The gym, locker room and pool area could use some sprucing up as they are looking a bit tired"

"It was a perfect weekend in downtown Chicago. There are great restaurants nearby and MCA is close by as well. We also had a beautiful weather that we walked along the lake. I swim everyday, and NoMi spa pool was perfect for my laps. They have a hot tub in the pool area and steam sauna in the locker room. If I didn't have a dinner reservation, I could have stayed in the steam room for a very long time! The breakfast at NoMi is always the best. I don't need to talk about the room since it is an high-end hotel. The blanket, I have the say... is so warm but very light. I loved it."

"Fantastic location and easily walkable to everything!! Newly renovated rooms are incredible and state of the art. Beds extremely comfortable and large bathroom and our room had a nice view of Lake Michigan too!! Ice bucket filled and ready for us and even brought me a small refrigerator for my medications. Loved our stay here for our twin birthday and the staff is very kind and helpful. Even surprised us with a birthday dessert!!. Definitely coming back here next time we are in Chicago!!"

"The Park Hyatt Chicago is the aboslute premier Luxury property in Chicago. Having stayed at every property in the City of this caliber I can truly say this is the best. Location is unparalelled with access to the Gold Coast, Michigan Avenue, Shopping, food, art, sports, etc. AND THEIR ART COLLECTION. Come. On. The team at Park Hyatt presents an incredible luxury exprerience without the stuffiness you may experience at properties like the Langham and Peninsula (which, in my opinion, are far more drab and dated). Proactivity has been cemented into their operation early on - anticipating any guest needs and addressing them flawlessly. Dining at NOMI is incredible as well - the food is top quality, service is warm and friendly, and the views are unmatched. THE BAR!? You may not find a more well appointed (ART, furniture, wine, beer and liquor) bar in a hotel in Chicago anywhere... and I'd argue you absolutely will not find a better staffed bar in a Chicago hotel... or maybe any hotel... anywhere. So... Who's the Park Hyatt for? One of the absolute best parts of this property is the diversity of the clientele. We have traveled here with our children, and, had two small children with our colleagues during this trip - the pre arrival included contat making CERTAIN they had EVERYTHING they needed for their children before arrival. Kids were WARMLY and SEPARATELY welcomed by doormen - a truly touching and meaningful approach to making our guests welcome. Families... Check. Business travelers? Lightning fast Wifi and proximity to whatever you need. Couples? The spa is fantastic and the rooms are beautfully romantic. All in all this really is one of my favorite hotels all around, and, if you cant tell.... we'll be back. THANK YOU PARK HYATT"
