PB hotel design editorial

Few Chicago skyscrapers carry as much chromatic drama as the Carbide and Carbon Building on Michigan Avenue — its dark polished granite base, terracotta-trimmed tower, and gold-leafed crown designed by Daniel and Richard Burnham in 1929, reportedly inspired by a champagne bottle wrapped in dark foil. Pendry Chicago, which took over the lower floors of this 40-storey Art Deco landmark when it opened in 2021, had the unusual task of matching an exterior this vivid without competing with it. The 164-room hotel was fitted into the building by interior designer Gary Handel, with Pendry's in-house team shaping the guest experience around a dialogue between the tower's Jazz Age bones and a more contemporary residential sensibility. The rooms balance those competing loyalties well — ornate plasterwork ceilings and deep-set original window frames preserved intact, set against charcoal oak headboards, brass-trimmed millwork, and lacquered red credenzas that give certain configurations a mid-century graphic sharpness. The bar leans into darkness: black marble floors, fluted walnut panelling, and a herringbone brass screen behind the backbar create an atmosphere closer to a private club than a hotel lounge. The ground-floor café takes the opposite approach entirely, a double-height glass pavilion wrapped in hand-painted botanical murals, Thonet-style bentwood chairs, and sage green cabinetry that turns the corner of Michigan Avenue into something unexpectedly garden-like.

"This location is just perfect, in the heart of the city, adjacent to the museums and the Magnificent Mile, walking distance to the riverwalk and SO MANY RESTAURANTS! The accommodations are very clean and it was a great ambiance. Chic and vibrant but quiet at the same time. I would definitely stay here again!"

"Always love staying at the Pendry Hotel in Chicago. Location, size of hotel, love the historic building and what they did to preserve it and turn it into a hotel. The staff, lounge areas, bar cafe.... and beds..... all fantastic."

"Room was extremely noisy from outside the sirens and horns. You will not get a good sleep. The valet expect you to carry cash to tipon hand. If not, then they will be extremely rude. Make sure that you are in a suit to fit in the tire, because if you are in any street attire, the management will look at you and judge you and look at you like you do not deserve to be there. If you’re going to this place, make sure you wear a three-piece suit and look like you have $1 million because if you don’t, you will definitely get judged and you will definitely not like the vibe that you are getting there. I recommend trying somewhere else I would never visit this place again."

"Stayed here for 1 night before Chicago half marathon. Reservation via FHR from Amex. There were 4 of us including two adult children running the race next day. We arrived around noon and a room was available but on a lower floor. I was disappointed that the only upgrade option through FHR was to a room with one king bed. I feel upgrades should be able to accommodate the same number of guests. Our room was nice. Two queen beds and standard amenities. Nothing over and above what I would consider normal room amenities. Coffee maker, water, overpriced snacks and alcohol. My biggest complaint was SO MUCH noise from the street below. Between sirens, horns and showoffs it was non stop until after 10:30PM. The staff was kind. In general it was just...fine. Valet is $82/night. I realize we had limited exposure to the property with only a one night stay, but for a 5 star location, it was just somewhat underwhelming. Probably not anything we would seek out on a return trip. There are plenty of other options for the same price in the area."

"The Pendry is in a class of its own: sheer elegance with top notch, dedicated staff all around that one would expect from this high caliber of a hotel. Located in a beautiful Art Deco building in right Michigan Avenue, plenty of F & B and fun attractions/options nearby, attached cafe/brasserie Venteux, unforgettable rooftop bar and wonderful gym. Bar/"living room" area east of the foyer, also a great spot to enjoy some cocktails. Spacious rooms, comfy bed & sleek bathroom. 5 out of 5!!! Thank you the staff again --- Tre"
