PB hotel design editorial

Few Chicago skyscrapers carry as much chromatic drama as the Carbide and Carbon Building on Michigan Avenue — its dark polished granite base, terracotta-trimmed tower, and gold-leafed crown designed by Daniel and Richard Burnham in 1929, reportedly inspired by a champagne bottle wrapped in dark foil. Pendry Chicago, which took over the lower floors of this 40-storey Art Deco landmark when it opened in 2021, had the unusual task of matching an exterior this vivid without competing with it. The 164-room hotel was fitted into the building by interior designer Gary Handel, with Pendry's in-house team shaping the guest experience around a dialogue between the tower's Jazz Age bones and a more contemporary residential sensibility. The rooms balance those competing loyalties well — ornate plasterwork ceilings and deep-set original window frames preserved intact, set against charcoal oak headboards, brass-trimmed millwork, and lacquered red credenzas that give certain configurations a mid-century graphic sharpness. The bar leans into darkness: black marble floors, fluted walnut panelling, and a herringbone brass screen behind the backbar create an atmosphere closer to a private club than a hotel lounge. The ground-floor café takes the opposite approach entirely, a double-height glass pavilion wrapped in hand-painted botanical murals, Thonet-style bentwood chairs, and sage green cabinetry that turns the corner of Michigan Avenue into something unexpectedly garden-like.

"Our flight was canceled due to bad weather and we were unable to make the first night. The staff was unwilling to accommodate me on a refund even though we were not at fault and would have checked in very late. We would have only been there a few hours. Pendry got a free nights pay on my behalf. I feel taken advantage of by a hotel that is part of the "fine hotels and resorts collection." I will be staying elsewhere in the future due to this and will recommend the same to my business partners. Also they DID NOT mention the spa being out of order at the time of booking which was a large reason this hotel was chosen. Dishonest practices. What a shame, otherwise a good property in other ways"

"The location of this hotel cannot be beat. It is even mentioned during the architecture tour if you decide to do that while you’re in town. The room I was in felt a bit dated and small but I would come again."

"We visited Chicago a few weeks ago and stayed at Pendry Chicago for two nights. We had a wonderful experience and would definitely stay here again. The hotel’s location is perfect. Many of Chicago’s top attractions are within easy walking distance. It took us only about five minutes to reach Cloud Gate (“The Bean”), and we also enjoyed walking to Navy Pier, the Magnificent Mile, and the Art Institute of Chicago. Our room was spacious, comfortable, and beautifully appointed. Our stay included breakfast, which was served at the hotel’s French restaurant, Venteux. The food was excellent, and it was a great way to start each day. Most of all, I would like to thank Muriel Tan for her outstanding customer service. She assisted us during check-out and was incredibly friendly and helpful. Before we left for the Art Institute on our last day, she even helped us purchase a few Pendry gifts to take home. Since our flight wasn’t until late afternoon, we left both our luggage and the gifts at the hotel while we continued sightseeing. Unfortunately, when we returned to collect our belongings, the bell staff accidentally forgot to give us the gifts. We didn’t realize they were missing until we were already on our flight home. The next day, Muriel noticed that our gifts were still at the hotel. She called me several times and also sent me an email to make sure she could reach me. She sincerely apologized for the inconvenience and immediately arranged to have the gifts shipped to our home. I was truly impressed by Muriel’s professionalism, attention to detail, and genuine care for her guests. Her exceptional service turned what could have been a disappointing experience into a memorable example of outstanding hospitality. I highly recommend Pendry Chicago to anyone visiting the city. Between its excellent location, beautiful accommodations, delicious dining, and remarkable staff, it made our Chicago trip even more special."

"I had a wonderful stay at the Pendry Chicago from July 6–8, 2026. From the moment I arrived, the staff made my first visit to Chicago truly unforgettable. A special thank you to Crystal and Muriel at the front desk and Michael, the bellman, for their exceptional kindness. They surprised me with chocolate-covered strawberries and specialty popcorn on my first evening, followed the next day by a wonderful bottle of Pinot Noir, chocolates, and even an adorable Chicago Cubs stuffed bear! I also want to thank Alex, the Chef Concierge, for his excellent sightseeing and dining recommendations. He took the time to help me plan my visit and made my trip even more enjoyable. The Pendry is a beautiful hotel, but it's the outstanding hospitality that makes it truly special. I highly recommend staying here and can't wait to return!"

"We had such a wonderful stay at the Pendry. It was a beautiful hotel but what made it stand out for us was the staff! Muriel was so considerate and helpful. We have 2 kids - 9months old and 5 year old, and she was helpful with both - helping us find activities, sharing recommendations, going out her way to make our stay so comfortable. Muriel, we're so thankful for you!! If we come back to Chicago, we will definitely be staying at the Pendry again!"
