PB hotel design editorial

Few Chicago skyscrapers carry as much chromatic drama as the Carbide and Carbon Building on Michigan Avenue — its dark polished granite base, terracotta-trimmed tower, and gold-leafed crown designed by Daniel and Richard Burnham in 1929, reportedly inspired by a champagne bottle wrapped in dark foil. Pendry Chicago, which took over the lower floors of this 40-storey Art Deco landmark when it opened in 2021, had the unusual task of matching an exterior this vivid without competing with it. The 164-room hotel was fitted into the building by interior designer Gary Handel, with Pendry's in-house team shaping the guest experience around a dialogue between the tower's Jazz Age bones and a more contemporary residential sensibility. The rooms balance those competing loyalties well — ornate plasterwork ceilings and deep-set original window frames preserved intact, set against charcoal oak headboards, brass-trimmed millwork, and lacquered red credenzas that give certain configurations a mid-century graphic sharpness. The bar leans into darkness: black marble floors, fluted walnut panelling, and a herringbone brass screen behind the backbar create an atmosphere closer to a private club than a hotel lounge. The ground-floor café takes the opposite approach entirely, a double-height glass pavilion wrapped in hand-painted botanical murals, Thonet-style bentwood chairs, and sage green cabinetry that turns the corner of Michigan Avenue into something unexpectedly garden-like.

"“I’ve stayed at several hotels in Chicago for work that cost around $200–$250 per night and had far better experiences. This time, I wanted to treat myself to what I expected would be a luxury stay, so I paid nearly $600 after taxes for one night. Unfortunately, there was absolutely nothing about the experience that felt luxurious. The room was extremely small, dark, and cold. The bathroom was so cramped that you had to completely reposition the door just to comfortably use the toilet. I was also placed on the 13th floor, which may sound minor, but coming from New York, where many buildings traditionally skip the 13th floor, it added to an already strange and uninviting experience. The atmosphere throughout the hotel was also nothing like what I expected from a property at this price point. There were people congregating in the lobby in extremely revealing attire, carrying their shoes, and the overall environment simply did not feel like an upscale or luxury hotel. The rooftop was surprisingly tiny and underwhelming as well. I will say that the waitstaff I interacted with were sweet and friendly, but at times the service seemed disorganized and confused. For nearly $600 for a single night, I expected a noticeably elevated experience. Instead, I’ve had significantly better stays at Chicago hotels costing less than half the price. I would not stay here again and cannot recommend it if you’re booking specifically for a luxury experience."

"I have to share this amazing experience I had here at the Pendry, from the moment we pulled up our trip was destined to be great. For starters the building itself displays rich luxury. Muriel at the front desk helped us promptly after entering the lobby. We arrived several hours early so our room was not ready. She checked us in and in brief conversation acknowledged my birthday was the next day. She provided a list of things to do and how to get there. One of which was the Chris Brown-Usher concert happening later in the day that my girlfriend and I ended up thoroughly enjoying! The following day after a full day of birthday activities I came back to the room to a HAND WRITTEN MESSAGE from her and the team whizzing me a happy birthday. Full disclosure I shed a tear because who does not enjoy being made to feel special on their birthday. Muriel made sure that my stay here was fit for that of a King. The view from the room was spectacular, hotel location convenient, sheets and pillows divine, and shower luxurious. On my very likely return to Chicago I will almost certainly stay at the Pendry and if you made it this far in the review you should too. Worth every penny spent."

"I cannot rave enough about the service at the Pendry. There was a slight hiccup at checkin due to a third party booking issue, in which my reservation was cancelled, and the manager Angel, along with his staff Muriel, and a host of other exemplary staff members rectified the issue immediately with kindness and care. Each time I entered into the lobby, I felt welcomed, and I would highly recommend. The location is perfect in proximity to Millennium Park, the Chicago Cultural Center, public transit, and a host of shopping experiences. While the amenities and decor of the facilities initially attracted me for my stay, it was the staff and care provided by Angel and Muriel that will ensure that I return."

"An exquisite luxury hotel with the most warm, caring, attentive staff EVER! From the doorman to the driver (Nike), to the front office team (Natalie, Annie, Jackie), to housekeeping, no ask is too big or too small. They NEVER stop at their best to meet each and everyone of your needs. They all make you feel like you're the most important person in the room. That's an awesome feeling."
