PB hotel design editorial

Few Chicago skyscrapers carry as much chromatic drama as the Carbide and Carbon Building on Michigan Avenue — its dark polished granite base, terracotta-trimmed tower, and gold-leafed crown designed by Daniel and Richard Burnham in 1929, reportedly inspired by a champagne bottle wrapped in dark foil. Pendry Chicago, which took over the lower floors of this 40-storey Art Deco landmark when it opened in 2021, had the unusual task of matching an exterior this vivid without competing with it. The 164-room hotel was fitted into the building by interior designer Gary Handel, with Pendry's in-house team shaping the guest experience around a dialogue between the tower's Jazz Age bones and a more contemporary residential sensibility. The rooms balance those competing loyalties well — ornate plasterwork ceilings and deep-set original window frames preserved intact, set against charcoal oak headboards, brass-trimmed millwork, and lacquered red credenzas that give certain configurations a mid-century graphic sharpness. The bar leans into darkness: black marble floors, fluted walnut panelling, and a herringbone brass screen behind the backbar create an atmosphere closer to a private club than a hotel lounge. The ground-floor café takes the opposite approach entirely, a double-height glass pavilion wrapped in hand-painted botanical murals, Thonet-style bentwood chairs, and sage green cabinetry that turns the corner of Michigan Avenue into something unexpectedly garden-like.

"My wife and I have been to the Pendry Chicago a few times and always had a great experience, the hotel history and central walking location is perfect. This visit I booked a one-night stay for my 37th Anniversary and once I met Muriel at the front desk, she made sure our stay was perfect and memorable, she is truly professional and great at her job. We also enjoyed the fantastic Jazz band at the speakeasy, the adjoining French restaurant and the lobby bar is always enjoyable. To top it off Muriel asked Deavonte (the house driver) drove us to therein station and saved us about an hour and a half wait."

"I used points to book a nice room at the Pendry for an anniversary and a birthday-a first for us, because we normally just use AirBnBs. However, after getting burned three to many times, I decided to cash out my AAirlines point and get a nice room at a shpitzy hotel for once. Of course, an unexpected cloud showed up, and my family required a different style of room. Originally told over the phone that nothing could be done, Muriel at the front desk worked very hard to give meet my needs, get me a substantial update at a serious discount, while showcasing what true customer service looks like. Muriel insisted on sending wine for our happy event, but when I told her due to my kosher diet we couldn’t have any wine, she truly exerted herself to find something that would work. The staff, Sam in particular, were kind and cordial. When hearing of our daughter, we were given two different plushies. The room was immaculate, the hotel bar is one of the most quaint classy and comfortable settings I’ve yet occupied, and the valet, while perhaps not the fastest, was a true true treat. While we are by no means high rollers, I do believe, on any future trip to Chicago, we will be staying by the Pendry. Just ask for Muriel!"

"If you are looking for a "4 star hotel" with high level accommodations and excellent guest service, just stay somewhere else. This hotel is not 4 star. It appears 4 star, as the lobby is gorgeous and the building is historic, but it does not operate as a high level hotel should. Wifi did not work in our room, our guest room phone did not work and was disconnected, food is overpriced, elevators are slow, check-in process was slow and they had so many people waiting in the lobby. If this is booked with fine hotels & resorts through American Express then DEFINITELY avoid - you do not get nearly any of the amenities they say they can/should provide."

"Hotel was a bit outdated, breakfast service was horrible. Hostess had a major attitude and the food and waitress took forever to come. Hotel room was noisy."
