PB hotel design editorial

Hyde Park's intellectual gravity — the University of Chicago, the Museum of Science and Industry, the ghosts of the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition — gives the Sophy Hyde Park an unusually strong sense of place for a hotel that opened in 2018. The eight-storey brick building at 53rd Street and South Cornell Avenue was purpose-built rather than converted, its dark masonry and steel-mullioned factory windows carrying the massing of a late industrial warehouse while sitting comfortably among the neighborhood's early twentieth-century apartment blocks. The ground floor houses Mesler, a restaurant and bar whose name recalls the area's deep Chicago history, its interior anchored by a marble-topped bar under an oval halo of bare-bulb pendants and a swirling marbled ceiling treatment that veers closer to a Florentine palazzo than a Chicago tavern. The 98 rooms were designed with an art program at their center rather than as an afterthought — large-scale abstract murals mounted behind the cream upholstered headboards dissolve the boundary between artwork and architectural surface, the teal, indigo, and ochre palette bleeding into geometric-patterned rugs in navy and white and dark-stained wide-plank oak floors. The dining room at Mesler layers the same sensibility differently: yellow leather club chairs arranged around a carved pedestal table, gallery-hung artwork covering paneled walls from dado to cornice, built-in bookshelves giving the room the atmosphere of a well-loved faculty club rather than a hotel restaurant.

"Nicely appointed boutique hotel in Hyde Park near the Obama Center. The neighborhood is vibrant with restaurants, shops, and amenities. The room was spacious. The best part of this hotel is the staff; service was consistently outstanding."

"Wonderful hotel surrounded by really tasty restaurants. Spacious well kept rooms. Our room had a rug lower than the flooring - tripped and stubbed my foot on the edge of the floor. Be advised the hotel does not have parking or offer parking. A Parking garage is a block and half away in which harassed by street people going to and fro. ( as with any major city )."

"Absolutely LOVED!!! the facilities. My room accommodations exceeded my expectations - and room service was quick and courteous. Location is close to Obama Center and Meisler restaurant was excellent for breakfast and dinner - loved the ambiance. Staff were friendly, accommodating, and exceptional in providing guidance and directions for getting around Chicago. When I return, and I will, I will be staying at The Sophy! Thank you for exceptional service and accommodations. You made my stay worth the adventure. 8-)"

"The hotel is very modern, clean and the rooms are absolutely gorgeous . The check in went smoothly. I had asked if we needed reservations for the restaurant and was told no, but when we went down for dinner at 7 we had to wait service motor 20-30 min. So make a reservation- the food was great! I am not rating this hotel based on the area it’s in, because then the score would go down and that’s unfair. It’s very dirty, trashy and noisy outside and I was told it can be unsafe to walk around in some areas. Stay in this beautiful hotel."

"My husband and I reserved at the Sophy to attend the Obama Presidential Center. We were pleasantly surprised to find an “i prefer” hotel nearby. Our room was comfortable and spacious. The bathroom is large enough and could certainly use one additional towel bar and shelving as the vanity is not large enough to hold multiple cosmetic bags, curling irons, etc. I was surprised the hotel did not offer feather bed pillows. Additionally we called the front desk four times for an iron and ironing board and our request was not filled until one more call the following day. Overall the hotel was clean and the housekeeping staff was accommodating with requests for extra towels. The restaurant was great with a fun bar scene and a good food selection. The coffee wasn’t the best however and while flavored creamer was available in the guest room it was not available in the restaurant. I had a candid conversation with the hotel general manager at check out and was able to discuss my thoughts. Overall, we would stay at The Sophy again and have already recommended it to all of our friends who plan future visits to the Obama Presidential Center."
