PB hotel design editorial

Hyde Park's intellectual gravity — the University of Chicago, the Museum of Science and Industry, the ghosts of the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition — gives the Sophy Hyde Park an unusually strong sense of place for a hotel that opened in 2018. The eight-storey brick building at 53rd Street and South Cornell Avenue was purpose-built rather than converted, its dark masonry and steel-mullioned factory windows carrying the massing of a late industrial warehouse while sitting comfortably among the neighborhood's early twentieth-century apartment blocks. The ground floor houses Mesler, a restaurant and bar whose name recalls the area's deep Chicago history, its interior anchored by a marble-topped bar under an oval halo of bare-bulb pendants and a swirling marbled ceiling treatment that veers closer to a Florentine palazzo than a Chicago tavern. The 98 rooms were designed with an art program at their center rather than as an afterthought — large-scale abstract murals mounted behind the cream upholstered headboards dissolve the boundary between artwork and architectural surface, the teal, indigo, and ochre palette bleeding into geometric-patterned rugs in navy and white and dark-stained wide-plank oak floors. The dining room at Mesler layers the same sensibility differently: yellow leather club chairs arranged around a carved pedestal table, gallery-hung artwork covering paneled walls from dado to cornice, built-in bookshelves giving the room the atmosphere of a well-loved faculty club rather than a hotel restaurant.

"We visit Chicago regularly. We LOVE the Sophy. It's where we always stay. Walking distance from many places including Lake Michigan (with a great view of the downtown skyline), University of Chicago, etc. It's in a real residential neighborhood that's very nice. The staff are outstanding in every respect. Housekeeping and hotel maintenance are great as are the rooms and lobby. Excellent restaurant."

"My stay at SOPHY Hotel exceeded every expectation. From the moment I arrived, the exceptional hospitality from Tiara, Chris, and Josh made me feel genuinely welcomed. Director Ivy and Ops Manager Teisha clearly run a seamless operation, and it showed in every detail of my stay. Mesler Kitchen Bar Lounge was a highlight of my stay. Restaurant Manager Debbie gave me a wonderful tour, and my server Maurice provided impeccable service. I will definitely be requesting him on my next visit. What makes SOPHY truly special is how it thoughtfully integrates art, music, science, and literature throughout the property. It feels less like a hotel and more like a cultural hub rooted in the Hyde Park community. The personal touches, including a bottle of Prosecco and a beautiful book on Hyde Park’s history, made the experience even more memorable. I highly recommend SOPHY for anyone seeking a thoughtful, design-forward boutique stay in Chicago."

"I love the SOPHY hotel. It's close to the University of Chicago, has a lovely vibe, and friendly staff. I've stayed there several times, but this last time it was severely understaffed. I was hoping to get breakfast--which does not open until 7:30--and no one showed up until 7:50 am. Then there was one server for a 10-15 guests who had all been patiently waiting for 20 minutes. I tried to order room service the next day, but no one ever answered the phone. There aren't a ton of fabulous food places around the hotel, so this was more of a problem then it might have been elsewhere."

"The hotel is nice, but for me it misses the mark. I appreciate the higher end amenities, but it took the usability of it all out of it. The afternoon drink, the restaurant, the record player with one record in the room. I get it, but it wasn’t for me. It’s almost so cool that it forgets to be practical."

"We loved the boutique feel of this hotel. The hardwood floors in the room were great as well. We were doing a tour of UChicago so this was the perfect location. So many food options locally as well. The staff were very welcoming and spoke everytime we entered and left. Odd note, the lobby smelled amazing everytime!"
