PB hotel design editorial

Fulton Market's transformation from meatpacking district to Chicago's most contested dining and hotel corridor finds a confident anchor at 200 North Green Street, where The Hoxton Chicago set up in 2019 inside a purpose-built ten-storey brick structure designed to evoke the neighborhood's industrial warehouse character. The red brick facade, articulated with a basketweave pattern across its upper registers and framed by steel-mullioned factory windows, carries the atmosphere of a converted loft building while being new construction — a distinction the Ennead Architects-assisted design handles with more conviction than most. Interior design came from Ennismore's in-house creative team working alongside Avroko, the New York studio whose period-layered approach suits the Hoxton brand's tendency toward lived-in warmth over polished anonymity. The 182 rooms deploy tufted leather headboards in tobacco and forest green velvet, brass dome reading lamps mounted on floor-to-ceiling poles, mid-century walnut case goods, and graphic duvet covers that add a playful note without tipping into whimsy. The ground-floor restaurant Cabra — a Peruvian rooftop concept by chef Stephanie Izard that was subsequently moved up — and the all-day Cira dining room below read as distinct interior environments: one drawn in cognac leather banquettes and dark-stained wide-plank oak, the other more intimate with floral carpet, slatted timber ceilings, and warm pendant clusters. Up top, the rooftop pool deck uses a checkerboard terrazzo surround in sage and terracotta, turquoise-tiled pool coping, and slender steel framing that keeps the Chicago skyline fully in view.

"Our stay at The Hoxton, Chicago was absolutely wonderful. The room was cozy, beautiful, and incredibly comfortable—exactly the kind of space that makes you want to linger a little longer. The staff was warm, welcoming, and made the entire experience feel effortless from start to finish. Our room had a fabulous view, which made both mornings and evenings feel even more special. A particularly thoughtful touch was the welcome card waiting in the room, acknowledging our belated Mother’s Day weekend celebration. It was such a simple but meaningful gesture that made us feel truly welcomed and appreciated. Room service was prompt, and the food was genuinely delicious. I enjoyed the fluffiest French toast, perfectly enhanced with granola and apple butter—an unexpected favorite! The bacon was cooked to the perfect crisp, and the eggs were light and fluffy, with the cheese melted beautifully on top. We also enjoyed lunch at Cabra, which was such a highlight of our stay. The shareable portions were absolutely delicious, making it the perfect spot to relax and enjoy a meal together. The flavors were vibrant, fresh, and beautifully balanced in every dish. My personal favorites were the shrimp ceviche and the chicken thigh skewers—both were packed with flavor and prepared perfectly. I also loved the “I Guava Have It” cocktail, which was refreshing, creative, and the perfect complement to lunch. Every detail—from the thoughtful hospitality to the incredible dining experiences—made the weekend feel elevated and memorable. I would absolutely stay at The Hoxton again and highly recommend it for anyone looking for comfort, style, exceptional service, and amazing food in Chicago."

"Overall, I’d give The Hoxton, Chicago a 4.1/10. For the price point and reputation, it really did not meet expectations. The hotel feels more focused on getting people to spend money at their restaurants and bars than taking care of the actual hotel guests staying there. One of the biggest disappointments was not even being able to get a reservation at the rooftop restaurant within 3 hours while staying at the hotel. For a property that markets itself as an upscale experience, you’d expect hotel guests to have some level of priority or accommodation. I booked through the American Express Hotel Collection and unfortunately they also did not honor the complimentary room upgrade or the late checkout benefits that are commonly associated with Hotel Collection bookings. That made the experience even more disappointing, especially considering the premium price. Compared to other Hotel Collection properties, this one fell short in service, guest experience, and overall value for the money. The aesthetic and location are nice, but overall the experience didn’t justify the cost or the rating this hotel currently has."

"Staff is great. Rooms are small but good. Unfortunately the lobby is super loud. There is a club atmosphere in the evening, which is fine because guests usually have plans. But there was a DJ playing on Saturday at 1pm that made it impossible to stand and have a planning conversation with guests. The nearby train noise didn't wake us but did bother some of our friends who were closest to it."

"Great location that is walkable to many bars, restaurants, and shops. Also right near a subway stop. Great free bikes! Only issue is that my wife (5’5”) was too short to comfortably ride their bikes. Hopefully they get a women’s size bike soon. We used DIVVY bikes for her. Rooms are small but modern, clean, and comfortable. Love the water bottle filler in the hallway. The only downside is that one side of the hotel faces the elevated subway. We were on the 10th floor and still found it a little bothersome at night, even with a sound machine and earplugs. Request a room facing the other side."
