PB hotel design editorial

At 330 North Wabash Avenue, the dark steel-and-glass tower designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe — completed in 1972 and among the last major works he oversaw before his death — gave The Langham Chicago one of the most architecturally significant addresses in American hospitality. The building's taut curtain wall and black-painted structural columns, visible in the street-level photographs at night, carry the discipline of late Miesian modernism without apology, and the hotel's interiors were conceived to honor rather than contradict that inheritance. Boston-based interior designer Alexandra Champalimaud took on the commission when the property opened in 2013, fitting 316 rooms across the lower floors of what had previously served as IBM's regional headquarters. Champalimaud's palette runs to warm ivory, taupe, and brushed gold — a deliberate counterpoint to the building's cool rationalism. Guest rooms feature four-poster beds with dark lacquered frames beneath gilded coffered ceilings, hand-painted wallcoverings scattered with gold-leaf botanical motifs, and Barcelona chairs positioned at floor-to-ceiling windows framing the Chicago River and Loop skyline. The lobby bar arranges tufted curved sofas and Knoll-adjacent lounge chairs across wide-plank oak floors, a digital artwork panel glowing against a gridded ebony wall. Below, the Chuan Spa's indoor pool sits beneath a turquoise ceiling embedded with fiber-optic points of light — an aquatic room that feels closer to a celestial vault than a conventional hotel amenity, and one of the more quietly theatrical spaces in Chicago.

"We love the Langham! The Club Lounge may be the best in the country. Great views, food, afternoon tea, apps and drinks..."

"This was an unforgettable, deeply refreshing reset for a mom of three who had never spent a full night unplugged from her kids—until this stay at The Langham. Marcus at the front desk set the tone from the very beginning with the perfect room on the 12th floor—stunning downtown and river views that made every moment feel peaceful and intentional. It was the perfect space for early morning meditations in the sunlight and quiet evening prayers as the sun set. This experience filled my soul with a renewed sense of energy, peace, and spirit that I didn’t even realize I needed this much. So grateful to everyone at the hotel for creating a space that felt safe, unforgettable, and truly healing."

"Door men never offered to help with bags until we were thru the door. Let me and a 70 year old uber driver struggle bus the bags thru the door. Club lounge is a bunch of cheap pre packaged food items, barely anything fresh. Afternoon tea is a joke. Breakfast was ok but nothing special. I would not pay extra to utilize the floor, not sure why people rave about the club floor."

"My daughter and I had a wonderful stay at the Langham Hotel. Service was outstanding. Our room was spacious and clean, with super comfortable beds and a lovely view. Included in one's stay is the spa, which was excellent. The location was conveniently central, for sightseeing around the city. I highly recommend this hotel."

"We really liked this property - higher end, great staff, amenities and room were awesome. We were surprised to find that there were spa facilities available - a steam and sauna in the locker rooms. They were pretty busy when I looked at them so I used the workout room instead, but my partner used them and he really liked them. The food and cocktails were also well above average. We really liked this property after staying at a few others that we didn't think were as good such as the Intercontinental and the Gwen, and would choose to stay here again when we come back to Chicago."
