PB hotel design editorial

At the corner of Superior Street and Michigan Avenue, where the Magnificent Mile reaches its densest concentration of retail and civic ambition, a limestone-clad tower completed in 2001 by Lucien Lagrange Architects established the Peninsula Chicago as one of the few new-build luxury hotels in America to hold its own against the century-old grand dames of the city's hospitality tradition. The building's neoclassical massing — projecting cornices, grid-patterned stone, a setback crown visible from the exterior images here glowing amber against the Chicago dusk — defers to the scale of its Michigan Avenue neighbors while the rooftop bar level announces itself with a purple-lit contemporary transparency that makes no such concessions to the past. The 339 rooms carry the Peninsula's signature integrated-technology headboards in dark-stained wood with inset upholstered panels and ivory linen, navy accent cushions grounding the otherwise pale palette of wool carpet and cream walls. Botanical wall panels, visible in the guestroom images, introduce a lightness that keeps the interiors from settling into the corporate neutrality that plagues comparable properties. The bar space — checkerboard marble floors in olive and ivory, plum velvet club chairs, brass pendant columns descending from a tessellated gold ceiling, and a painted Chicago skyline mural behind the counter — has a quietly theatrical conviction. The mid-building spa pool, lined with floor-to-ceiling steel-framed windows overlooking the Loop, channels the serene geometry of a private natatorium suspended twenty floors above the street.

"Booked through Chase Sapphire Edit program. Hotel is luxurious with excellent facilities. It is poorly managed, staff is poorly trained and are, at times, overwhelmed. Did not get the room upgrade. Received a horrible room, 1215, across from the service room where housekeeping and room-service work all-day; constant noise - door slamming, staff talking/yelling in the hallway. At check-in, was told I would get a daily room credit for the included breakfast - which is not entirely accurate. It's not a credit, it is use-it-or-lose-it; with balance billing. I can't remember the exact amount of the stipend but it does not cover their basic "Peninsula Breakfast." Was told at check-in our "late" check-out time is noon; which was fine we were leaving away. On check-out day, went to lobby early to review folio and then had breakfast in the lobby. After clearing our plates it took about 1/2 hour to get the check, got back to the room at 10:30 am; and our keys did not work; I asked the supervising housekeeper to let us in. She said she couldn't but would call the front desk. I overheard her say- "I show they are checked-out." After waiting a long time, a guy from the front desk came and let us back into the room, but did not bring a key. I asked for him to bring us a key, and he never came back, we got no additional response. There was a message on the TV indicating we checked-out. When booking through Chase Sapphire, whether using points or hard money, you pay a premium but it's "fool's gold." (You don't get the benefits.) What's the point if the hotel is going to treat you as if you booked through an on-line discount provider. (At Z Bar, they are rude. I'm not sure if it's managed by the hotel, though; so, won't bother with the details.)"

"My wife and I spent two nights at the Peninsula Chicago while visiting friends. This is simply one of the best run hotels in the United States. Our suite was comfortable, quiet and spacious. Service from housekeeping and in-room dining was excellent. Our breakfasts and a lunch in the Lobby restaurant were also top-notch. I’d give it 6 stars if I could."

"Perfect from start to finish! Decided on a last minute overnight stay over spring break with my husband and 2 kids ( 9 & 11). Joy at the front desk was an absolute delight. We have stayed at the Peninsula several times and every single person we have ever come in contact with has been amazing. The location is prime for Gold Coast- kiddos enjoyed the scavenger hunt around the hotel and really loved the pool. Can't say enough about this hotel, highly recommend it for any kind of trip you are planning."
