PB hotel design editorial

At the corner of Superior Street and Michigan Avenue, where the Magnificent Mile reaches its densest concentration of retail and civic ambition, a limestone-clad tower completed in 2001 by Lucien Lagrange Architects established the Peninsula Chicago as one of the few new-build luxury hotels in America to hold its own against the century-old grand dames of the city's hospitality tradition. The building's neoclassical massing — projecting cornices, grid-patterned stone, a setback crown visible from the exterior images here glowing amber against the Chicago dusk — defers to the scale of its Michigan Avenue neighbors while the rooftop bar level announces itself with a purple-lit contemporary transparency that makes no such concessions to the past. The 339 rooms carry the Peninsula's signature integrated-technology headboards in dark-stained wood with inset upholstered panels and ivory linen, navy accent cushions grounding the otherwise pale palette of wool carpet and cream walls. Botanical wall panels, visible in the guestroom images, introduce a lightness that keeps the interiors from settling into the corporate neutrality that plagues comparable properties. The bar space — checkerboard marble floors in olive and ivory, plum velvet club chairs, brass pendant columns descending from a tessellated gold ceiling, and a painted Chicago skyline mural behind the counter — has a quietly theatrical conviction. The mid-building spa pool, lined with floor-to-ceiling steel-framed windows overlooking the Loop, channels the serene geometry of a private natatorium suspended twenty floors above the street.

"We returned to The Peninsula as a family of 8 (3 different rooms) and were even more blown away by our stay than the first time we came. I didn't think it could get better, but it did. What worked: Anticipatory service; genuine warmth and friendliness; excellent food and beverage, include innovative and new dishes in The Lobby for breakfast, and the fabulous and friendly team at Pierrot Gourmet (not to be missed! Their team is so joyful, efficient and friendly and the pastries and food are phenomenal). Front desk, housekeeping, concierge and valet are endlessly helpful, gracious and happy to see you and help you, at all hours of the day. Vince Reyes, in particular, was a joy to work with. I had a question before the trip, and he immediately helped me with care, concern and an easy and genuine approach that made me feel like he was more than happy to help. He was gracious and kind, and helped make our trip to Chicago much more than a trip, but a special celebration that we will remember for a very long time. Also, the interiors are so beautiful and elegant, the blues and creams so elevated and in an understated, not trying-so-hard way, it makes the stay all the more memorable and soothing. (The floral brocade wall decor with the bee ... so stunning). To sum it up, my five-year-old asked if we could "move in" on our last day. I shared the same desire, and you probably will too."

"We had a girls trip planned for the grey days of January. Floyd at the front desk took amazing care of us. We ate amazing food at the Lobby and room service. Room was spotless and had every possible thing you could need. Mood lighting in the rooms was fantastic. I can’t recommend this hotel enough. New all time favorite. We will be back."

"We arrived at The Peninsula Chicago for a two-night getaway, instantly captivated by the hotel’s elegance. Dinner at the hotel's restaurant was a highlight, filled with delicious food and heartfelt conversation. The next morning, we indulged in a couples massage at the spa. We explored Millennium Park, snapping fun photos by the Cloud Gate. That evening, we relaxed at the bar, sipping delicious cocktails. Our stay was a perfect blend of romance and relaxation, leaving us with cherished memories as we checked out."

"Let me begin by saying that I cannot stand over the top, saccharine reviews, as they usually betray a dearth of experience. OK, that being said, The Peninsula Chicago is absolutely next level. I have had the good fortune of staying at most of the finest hotels in Chicago and I believe the Peninsula is at the top of the pyramid. Every single person we encountered greeted us with a smile and a certain enthusiasm, which did not appear to be manufactured. The property itself is elegant, befitting a five star Hotel, and the location cannot be beat. The rooms are large and absolutely immaculate and are appointed beautifully. I actually found myself looking for flaws because I was so impressed by the presentation. Even the carpeting beneath your feet feels so push and new that it is literally a joy to walk upon. The bathrooms are really spacious as is the dressing area. The entire room is well lit, and really comfortable. We had a superb dinner at The Lobby and lunch the next day at Pierrot Gourmet, which is a great people watching spot fashioned as a French café at street level. As is the case with any urban hotel of this class, it is not inexpensive, and the city is loud, but I sure hope to return."

"Brought our family downtown for magical evening at the Peninsula Hotel. The roof top ice-skating and the indoor swimming pool were fabulous. The worst service experience we had last night at the hotel was when we called the concierge to see if they could get us into an Italian restaurant. Their response was “it’s Saturday night. Where do you think I can get you in…” When you’re spending over $1,000 a night for a room and somebody tells you; “Sorry Charlie”, it makes you wonder what you’re paying the extra up charge for! We also waited over 30 minutes to get someone to take our order in the Hotel’s Z bar… I will say that the room was excellent and we did have room service last night “ dessert “ as well as this morning breakfast and they both were very good. Next time we’ll go to the Langham Hotel, which is partnering with with the Art Institute of Chicago and actually has a concierge program for families. Happy Holidays. Best regards, Jim Curley"
