PB hotel design editorial

Sharing a tower with Water Tower Place — the brutalist-inflected mixed-use slab designed by Loeb, Schlossman & Hackl and completed in 1975 on Michigan Avenue — placed The Ritz-Carlton Chicago in one of the most commercially ambitious structures built in postwar America, a 74-story concrete frame that houses retail, residences, and a hotel beginning on the 12th floor. The arrangement gives the hotel something unusual: guest rooms that begin well above the street, with floor-to-ceiling windows framing either the Chicago skyline massing to the south or Lake Michigan opening to the east, an expanse of blue that shifts from steel-grey to cobalt depending on the season. Recent renovations refreshed the 434 rooms in a palette of warm greige, natural oak headboards with channeled upholstery, and brass-finish side tables, the effect calibrated toward residential calm rather than corporate formality. The public spaces carry more ambition. The lobby bar, visible in the images, deploys fluted walnut millwork across walls and ceiling coffers, a marble counter in blush and cream anchored beneath a cascading installation of pendant lights in brass — a composition that draws on the mid-century Chicago tradition of richly detailed hotel interiors without reproducing it literally. The indoor lap pool, capped by a gridded skylight of steel and glass, carries an older institutional confidence that the newer interiors wisely leave intact. Together the floors span a hotel that has absorbed four decades of the city around it.

"Sadly, this property should not be booked for a few reasons. Number one the customer service is absolutely awful if you have an issue. I have called eight times, I have call records to prove it have left messages for management and not one of them have called me back. Tony apparently is the director of operations, but has a difficult time returning phone calls. We stayed at the property for Mother’s Day weekend and we were in a two room suite, we utilized the restaurant and the spa. You think having spent thousands of dollars they would get back to me, but I’m still waiting for my return calls. We used the valet parking Service. If you have a nice vehicle, I would recommend parking at a super eight because your Customerservice would be better. Upon checkout, the valet had the door open for me, my car was pulled up to the car in front of me and there was a car to my right, so I had to wait for the car on the right to move before I could pull away. We drove 20 minutes to our next stop, and when I got out to plug the parking meter I had noticed damage to my vehicle, which is an Escalade. I immediately called hotel, I asked if I should come back with my car and was told they would get a hold of me. We went to our appointment. I waited for someone to call me back and no one did. I called back three hours later because we are ready to head back toWisconsin and I asked again. Should I come back, again? I was told somebody would get a hold of me. Again, no one did. Monday morning.I called the hotel again to where I got the third-party valet company and they said they would make a claim. The person that makes a-claim got a hold of me and we did the claim and the next day I got an email stating the claim was denied. Keep in mind I asked them to pull the cameras. I have three witnesses with me that know my car was not damaged when I entered the valet and know that it was damaged when it came out of the valet. The woman at this third-party site also does not return emails or phone calls because I have disputed this decision and I have asked them to pull the cameras on multiple occasions to this day not one management or valet person has returned my call and I now have a damaged vehicle This is not acceptable Service of a Ritz Carlton. I would expect this from the super eight, but I am absolutely shocked at how they treat some of their top paying customers! I do not recommend anyone stay here because they don’t care."

"One night stay, followed by a full day making use of the conference facilities. I’m a big fan of Ritz Carlton but had not yet visited this Chicago location. It did not disappoint, everything was great from checking in to checking out. Had a great night sleep too."

"The Ritz-Carlton Chicago never disappoints. From the moment you walk in, you’re greeted by an incredible staff that goes above and beyond to make your stay unforgettable. The hotel itself is stunning—elegant, warm, and beautifully maintained—and the location couldn’t be better for exploring the city. Whether you’re visiting for business or a weekend getaway, this is one experience you don’t want to miss. Treat yourself—you deserve it."

"The hotel is amazing! The location is great, very central to a lot of things. Hotel is walking distance to many shops and restaurants. The hotel has great size gym; I enjoyed the sauna after my work out. Big thanks to Mr. Tony Lytle for checking in on me to ensure my stay is exceptional."

"My stay at the Ritz-Carlton Chicago was absolutely exceptional. The level of service here is truly what hospitality should look like. A special thank you to Morrine from housekeeping, who made my stay even more memorable. She greeted me every time she saw me in the hallway with such genuine warmth and did an incredible job servicing my room. What stood out most was her attention to the little details; she noticed how much tea I drank and that the dark Nespresso pods were my favorite, and made sure my replenishments reflected that. It’s those thoughtful touches that make a stay feel personal. Every team member I encountered; from the front desk, housekeeping, restaurant servers, bar staff, bell desk, and valet; all were friendly, professional, and truly made me feel welcomed and appreciated. That kind of culture only happens with great leadership, and it’s clear that Peter Simoncelli and Leo Enriquez have built something special here. The bell and valet teams were consistently warm, efficient, and professional. This is my second stay at the Ritz-Carlton Chicago, and it is now the only place I will stay when visiting the city. I also attended sunrise yoga each morning, and the instructor was fantastic, a perfect way to start the day. Make sure you leave time for the spa as well. I booked a one-hour service with Maria, who was incredible, and I’m already regretting not booking 90 minutes! I made a full morning of it enjoying the steam room and sauna beforehand. The spa is serene, peaceful, and the perfect place to truly relax. The Ritz-Carlton Chicago is a beautiful property, but what truly makes it special is the people."
