PB hotel design editorial

Standing twenty-three stories above the intersection of Milwaukee, North, and Damen Avenues — the crossroads Chicagoans simply call the six corners — a terra-cotta-clad Art Deco tower built in 1929 by Perkins, Chatten & Hammond gives The Robey its entire architectural argument. The building's stepped crown, visible for blocks across Wicker Park's low-rise grid, was designed as an office tower and spent decades as such before its 2016 conversion into a 69-room hotel under the direction of développeur firm Grupo Habita, whose sensibility runs to adaptive reuse with a spare, design-forward hand. The interiors honor the building's geometry without retreating into period pastiche. Rooms are fitted with low-slung platform beds in dark-stained oak, marble-topped nightstands cantilevered from lacquered red steel brackets, and frosted glass partition walls — details visible in the images that draw a clear line to the Bauhaus tradition rather than 1920s Deco ornament. Marcel Breuer's Cesca chair appears at corner tables where black-trimmed casement windows frame rooftop views over the neighborhood's Victorian two-flats. Downstairs, the all-day restaurant deploys deep crimson leather banquettes against herringbone oak floors and pendant Edison fixtures suspended from a graphite ceiling — industrial warmth calibrated to the neighborhood rather than the Loop. The rooftop pool deck, modest in scale, turns the building's height into its main amenity, the Chicago skyline and the steeples of Wicker Park's older churches visible in every direction.

"Stayed one night at The Robey on a vacation visit to Chicago. The hotel has a friendly staff and a cool vibe and is located in the Wicker Park neighborhood. Rooms are modern and spacious; we had a corner room overlooking the neighborhood. Rooms feature comfortable beds, robes and other amenities like Le Labo toiletries. A cafe on the first floor offers all day dining. One of the highlights is the rooftop bar that has skyline views. There is also a swimming pool. If you find yourself in need of lodging in the Wicker Park neighborhood of Chicago, The Robey is a stylish choice. You won't be disappointed. I'm eager to come back!"

"Thankfully, we only booked a one-night stay at The Robey. The common areas (e.g., elevator area, corridors) are extremely dark with almost no natural light and dark paint everywhere. Conversely, our king corner room had so much light at night it was difficult to sleep. Firstly, one of the blackout shades in our room went only halfway down, and though we asked them at 4:30 to fix it while we were out for the evening and they said they would, they did not do so. Secondly, the light from the extremely large bathroom window streamed into the bedroom through the glass wall separating the bathroom from the bedroom. From the moment I entered, I felt like I was in the dark. To pile on to to the sleep disruption, one of the hotel bars blasted music late into the night. It literally shook our room and made it impossible to try to sleep until the bar shut down. The bed was like sleeping on a rock. I will not return."

"Just spent a night in the Robey. It was near my son's apartment, so it was a good location. It was a delight from the time I checked in, to my departure. The desk staff is amazing. I wish I had gotten their names. Cordial, kind, helpful, and just overall friendly! The room (307) was perfect. I loved watching the trains come and go (and it wasn't too noisy) Bed was comfy, large bathroom and cool sitting area. I will definitely stay again."

"The service was absolutely incredible, we stayed for our wedding weekend and everyone made us feel so welcome. The room service ladies are fabulous and the restaurant workers were just so much fun. Couldn’t recommend this place more!!"

"Stayed here for four nights. I used to live in Wicker Park and saw online that the old abandoned office tower next to the Damien Blue Line stop had been converted to an upscale hotel. My first concern was that, having previously lived next to the CTA Blue Line, it’s quite loud, however from inside the hotel the noise is quite manageable, and a lot quieter that it would be at street level. Was exciting to get back into Wicker Park again, and all the restaurants, bars, and neighborhood life that area has to offer, it is certainly preferable to staying downtown. As I mentioned, the hotel is right next to the Damien Blue Line so getting to and from the airport isn’t a problem at all. North, Damien and Milwaukee avenues, the cross streets the hotel is at, all have frequent bus service also. Would potentially stay here again for future trips to Chicago."
