PB hotel design editorial

Cobblestone porte-cochère, a central fountain ringed with impatiens, deep-blue awnings above iron-railed balconies — the arrival sequence at Waldorf Astoria Chicago has the unhurried geometry of a European grand hotel rather than anything the Gold Coast neighborhood typically produces. Hellmuth, Obata + Kassabaum designed the limestone-clad tower, which rises 37 floors and holds 215 rooms and suites, and from the street the building carries the feeling of a Haussmann-era Parisian block transplanted to the corner of Walton and Bellevue — classical proportions, pronounced rustication at the base, the kind of facade that settles into its surroundings rather than competing with them. Inside, the interiors navigate the familiar tension between Waldorf grandeur and contemporary restraint with reasonable confidence. Guest rooms move between two registers: one deploys richly upholstered headwall panels in caramel and deep charcoal with brass-trimmed bedside lighting and sputnik-style globe pendants near the window; another leans harder into drama, pairing lacquered black case goods with a large-format floral photograph — crimson blooms dissolving into darkness — mounted above the bed in a steel-framed surround. The dining room shown in the images commits fully to the Beaux-Arts brasserie idiom: black-lacquered millwork with gold pinstriping, antique mirror panels, tufted burgundy banquettes, caramel leather armchairs on black-and-white marble tile. The outdoor terrace, sheltered by the building's limestone flank and planted with multi-stem trees in oversized ribbed planters, offers a pocket of calm that few Chicago hotels manage convincingly.

"My boyfriend and I have stayed at the Waldorf Astoria Chicago twice and each time has been a true 10/10 experience. Everything from the attentiveness of the staff to the quality of the rooms is beyond exceptional. Our most recent stay was for my 33rd birthday and not only were we given a beautiful room upgrade, but there was the sweetest welcome gift with a handwritten card in our room. A special thank you to Jud, Sheryl, Logan, Miche, and Riz for your unmatched hospitality and for making our stay truly memorable."

"From the moment we arrived everything was very warm and professional with attention to detail. The staff was genuinely friendly. Will checked us in and was very welcoming and wanted to make sure our stay was perfect. We enjoyed breakfast and dinner and the servers to the mixologist Floyd were awesome! We are already planning our next trip to Chicago and the Waldorf Astoria will be our hotel of choice again."

"I absolutely love traveling with my 97 year old mother in love and while planning for that trip, I obtained accommodations as such. Well, I had to flip the script and truly the Waldorf turned lemons into lemonades. I won’t go into a lot of detail on that and will just say - this property is exactly what I needed - quaint, tucked away (which I loved) and beautiful. The room’s decor and smell was typical of luxury, yet the room space was unexpected especially for downtown Chicago. Turn down service was perfect. Do not touch the minibar though LOL. While I know better to pick up something these eyes aren’t what they used to be, and I was charged the $18. However, a quick check and Will at the front desk quickly corrected the bill. He was super friendly and quick. The house car (which goes a mile distance) was an added bonus and our driver was such a doll, can’t remember her name but she went to Grand Valley State University before transferring back to IL. She was a breath of fresh air. Bernard’s (The Speakeasy) has a great girlfriend, couple and work networking vibe all in one. It has that exclusive, no cameras allowed feel - which I lovedddd. I can’t wait to bring my husband. It’s hard to have a girls, couple and work vibe all in one location, yet it was achieved AND the bartenders have a nice pour (value added!). All in all what was supposed to be a trip for one thing truly turned into an entire different trip and the Waldorf in Chicago helped us make the best lemonade I’ve ever tasted. Will definitely return!"

"I cannot say enough wonderful things about the Waldorf Astoria Chicago. This was our third stay here, and it certainly won't be our last. Every team member we encountered was genuinely friendly and helpful. Whenever we needed anything, a quick call to guest services had it taken care of immediately and with a smile. I want to give a special shout-out to Sheryl at the concierge desk, who truly made this an incredible visit. We were in Chicago celebrating my husband’s birthday, and her enthusiasm matched ours—she went above and beyond to make the occasion extra special. Upon arrival, we were greeted with a cake and treats delivered to our room. When I asked for assistance organizing something special for his actual birthday, she helped execute it flawlessly. Each evening, as we returned from exploring the city, she made a point to ask about our day and offer excellent recommendations for dinner and upcoming activities. She made us feel like true VIPs throughout our entire stay. We stayed in a Junior Suite, which remains our favorite room type here. It is spacious, luxurious, and exceptionally comfortable. The bed and pillows provided a fantastic night’s sleep, and the housekeeping staff was thorough—always managing to refresh the room even when we stepped out for just a short period. The dining and beverage service was also outstanding. We enjoyed a wonderful dinner at the hotel restaurant, ordered breakfast via room service every morning (which arrived hot, fresh, and perfectly timed), and ended each evening at the bar with an expertly crafted Old Fashioned. The Waldorf Astoria has easily become our favorite hotel in Chicago and stands out as one of the best properties we have ever stayed in. Thank you to the entire staff for making our trip so memorable—we cannot wait to return!"

"My Girlfriend and I had an amazing time. The staff is fantastic. The room, food and service is top tier. It’s our 5th time this year and we will keep coming back! Logan even gave my girlfriend a bag of chocolates and Waldorf teddy bear. Over the top service"
