PB hotel design editorial

The 1931 Coca-Cola bottling plant that anchors Indianapolis's Bottleworks District is one of the Midwest's finest surviving examples of Art Deco industrial architecture — its cream terracotta facade richly ornamented with relief panels, fluted pilasters, and the kind of confident geometric detailing that American manufacturers once commissioned without hesitation. Converted into the Bottleworks Hotel and opened in 2020, the building was adapted by TWG Development with interiors by Joanna Taft's team at Studio M, who treated the original fabric as the primary design material rather than a backdrop to be softened or modernized away. The lobby makes the ambition immediately legible: geometric tiled walls in teal, gold, and burgundy run the full length of the ground floor, a terrazzo checkerboard floor reflecting the original globe pendants suspended from pressed-metal ceiling panels. A circular red velvet banquette placed at the room's axis underscores the period commitment without tipping into pastiche. The 139 guest rooms pull back from that exuberance into a darker, more stripped register — charcoal headboards set against walnut millwork, black-painted ceilings grounding white walls, grid-paned industrial windows left structurally honest. The bar carries the same industrial confidence outward: pressed-tin ceiling tiles stamped in a starburst pattern, polished concrete floors, and backlit amber bottles arranged across shelves that glow against the blackened surround like a distillery at night.

"We enjoyed our stay at Bottleworks Hotel. The hotel is clean and quiet. Staff were helpful and friendly. Location is great, close to highways and within walking distance of food and shops. We definitely will stay here again next time we go to Indianapolis."

"Oh my goodness! We traveled to Indianapolis to host a small (25 person) event. Family in town recommended Bottleworks and we couldn't have been happier. Several guests of the event stayed at the hotel, as did we. The hotel is beautiful; extra care was taken to maintain the original tile and layout of what was originally a Coca-Cola bottling plant. Our rooms were creatively designed, spotlessly clean and very comfortable. The location was perfect for us; less than a mile from downtown and very walkable. But what was really over the top here was the staff--every single person was helpful, inviting, and concerned for our needs. I've truly never experienced anything like it. Amanda at the front desk and Meg in Events were particularly wonderful, but from the top down our experience was the same. I will certainly stay here again next time I'm in Indianapolis."

"I highly recommend Bottleworks. This space isn’t big enough to hold all the compliments I have for this fantastic hotel. It is beautiful, retaining many of the original Art Deco details, and very conveniently located, with shopping and good restaurants within walking distance. The large rooms are quiet, and the free wifi is strong. The coffee shop is open 24/7, the bar is hopping. The hotel was sold out during the basketball tournament, but the entire place was immaculate. However, my greatest praise is for the hotel’s staff, who went well above their responsibilities to make my mother’s 90th birthday party amazing. The decor was perfect, there was more than enough amazing food, and when unexpected extra guests showed up, they were cheerfully accommodated. I couldn't be more pleased, and I left Indianapolis convinced that everyone in the Midwest is nicer than anyone on the West Coast."
