PB hotel design editorial

A former brass and iron foundry on Indianapolis's north side, built in the early twentieth century and left largely intact through decades of industrial use, gave the Ironworks Hotel Indy its structural bones — exposed concrete columns, weathered brick walls, and the kind of ceiling height that no new-build hospitality project can convincingly fake. The conversion, completed in 2015, preserved the manufacturing shell while fitting 120 guest rooms across four floors, with the rooftop sign referencing the gear-and-sprocket typography of the original facility. The interiors carry the atmosphere of a well-curated American industrial loft rather than a theme-park version of one. In the lobby, tufted black leather Chesterfield sofas anchor the seating arrangement on wide-plank reclaimed oak floors, exposed ductwork painted black overhead, and amber glass pendant lanterns clustered in groups above communal tables. A metal map of the continental United States — fabricated from salvaged factory components — anchors one wall with deliberate Americana weight. Guest rooms work a tighter palette of slate blue lacquered ceilings and exposed whitewashed brick, the arched steel-framed factory windows left as the primary architectural gesture, framing views across the surrounding neighborhood. Leather-strapped upholstered headboards and industrial task lamps on steel-framed nightstands keep the industrial lineage present without overwhelming a space designed, ultimately, for sleep. The Provision restaurant terrace, cantilevered on exposed steel gantry framing at the building's second level, gives the street elevation its most compelling nocturnal character.

"I traveled to Indianapolis for business and stayed at the Ironworks Hotel. The experience exceeded my expectations in every way. The accommodations were exceptional and the staff were friendly and professional. I visited two of the restaurants during my stay, and was not disappointed. Will definitely stay again when I return to Indy!"

"An outstanding experience and example of a boutique hotel. Fantastic service. A great example of how to transition a used building into a destination. I’ve also stayed at their sister hotel, The Bottleworks, each hotel is unique and offers an outstanding experience."

"It was the end of a business trip when I realized on the flight (still on the tarmac) I did not have my laptop. We got our things, hopped off the flight and headed for the car rental station. Once we secured the laptop (they FOUND it!), we now needed a place to stay for one more night. My wife worked quickly, found Ironworks, and directed me (in our new rental car) to the location. We could have stayed in something close to the airport, something without character but I was so happy to see she chose a place where it seems every detail was thought through. The feel of the district it sat in, the materials and furnishings used in the construction, the atmosphere felt like something that could have cost twice as much and not felt wrong to do so. Then there was the staff. Upon check-in, she asked how our night was going and we, with humor, explained our tale. Without hesitation she found a suite available and placed us there to help give our stressful evening a soft and positively memorable ending. The one regret we had was we could only stay there for nine hours until we left for our next flight because the corner room was absolutely divine and really could have been a home away from home for as long as we needed."

"Beautiful, clean, unique, well-appointed hotel with a variety of room and suite types available to choose from…and bonus, it’s pet-friendly! Everything you could possibly want is either on the property, or very close by. Top notch restaurants, on-site bar, great shopping, and exceptional breakfast available at Rize on the first floor (make your reservation early for that). The entire staff, from the valet to front desk to housekeeping, were warm, welcoming, professional, and focused on making sure our stay was exceptional. 6 of us stayed quite comfortably in the spacious double queen bed suite with pull out sofa. No detail was overlooked. We were provided plenty of towels, linens, blankets and pillows, slippers, robes, and even a complimentary toothbrush that was forgotten at home. The beds and pillows were quite comfortable, and the temperature of the room was easy to control—a very important detail in a room full of post-menopausal women. I had informed the hotel prior to arrival that we were celebrating a birthday during our stay. When we entered the room, we were pleasantly surprised to find a thoughtful birthday message, a very nice bottle of wine, and a delicious box of gourmet chocolates to help us celebrate. Any request we made, whether for ice or extra coffee pods, was fulfilled promptly and with a smile. My only regret about booking at Ironworks Hotel is that we only stayed one night! If you’re in the Indianapolis area, for business or pleasure, I HIGHLY recommend a stay at this distinctive hotel. I know I will definitely be back, and so will my friends!"
