PB hotel design editorial

Three historic facades on Louisville's West Main Street — a Beaux-Arts commercial building, a Romanesque Revival brick structure, and a gutted industrial shell whose exposed steel trusses now frame a glass-ceilinged bar — stand in deliberate conversation with a new copper-clad tower rising behind them. Together they form Hotel Distil, an Autograph Collection property that opened in 2019 and draws its identity entirely from the bourbon country that surrounds it. The name references Prohibition's repeal, a gesture that carries through to the ground-floor bar and the retractable-roof courtyard restaurant, where original brick walls are colonized by hanging ferns and a gas fireplace branded Repeal burns at the far end. The 195 guest rooms, spread across the new tower, stay grounded rather than flashy — tufted leather headboards in caramel and tan, custom geometric-patterned carpet in slate blue and cream, brass side tables, and bar carts that acknowledge the city's distilling culture without leaning into pastiche. Floor-to-ceiling windows in the upper rooms frame the Ohio River and the Clark Memorial Bridge, Louisville's industrial riverfront functioning as the view the interiors were built around. The main dining room, with its grid of copper-finished pipe rigging strung with filament bulbs above dark herringbone floors and red leather booth seating, carries the atmosphere of a serious Southern steakhouse — warm, unhurried, and clearly rooted in place.

"What a great hotel in the heart of whiskey row! Great people, great accommodations, and great spirits!"

"I had a pleasant one-night stay at Hotel Distil. The location is ideal right on Whiskey row downtown. The front desk staff was nice and I was quickly checked-in. The common areas are nicely and tastefully decorated, with a strong sense of place. My king room on the 12th floor was comfortable, nicely appointed and again, on theme. My room was generally quiet, though the room ventilation made a rattling noise. By the time I noticed the annoyance it was close to 10pm and I was tired, so I didn't try and call the front desk about it. I used and appreciated the gym. The Repeal restaurant is great and clearly a popular spot with locals as well. I had both dinner and breakfast there and the food was delicious, and though the place was absolutely packed, service was friendly and attentive. I'll happily stay at Hotel Distil again when in Louisville!"

"The service was amazing from the valet, front desk, and room service. A special shout out to Lyric and Pamela, who were top-notch. We always purchase the signature scent candle, but the hotel was out. But the girls scoured the hotel and found one for us!! We definitely will stay there again. The hotel is centrally located and within walking distance to restaurants and distilleries."

"As we walked in we felt under dressed as most of the other guests were dressed to the nines. However, the hotel staff greeted us like we were the most important client they had that day. The nightly 1933 toast was very unique and quite fun. The attached restaurant, Repeal, was top notch for a quick appetizer at the bar or a drink to review the day. The food was amazing, we only wish we would have had time to sit there for their dinner menu as they are supposed to be one of the best steak houses in town. The preservation of the original outside architecture was a nice combination with the modern interior."
