PB hotel design editorial

Allison Owen's 1906 Italianate City Hall Annex on Carondelet Street was never designed with guests in mind — it was built to govern — which makes what EskewDumezRipple and Studio Shamshiri did with it all the more unexpected. Maison Métier, which joined Hyatt's Unbound Collection when it opened in 2019, preserved the cream-stone facade with its Ionic columns, cartouche-crowned balustrade, and black canopy entrance essentially intact, while gutting the civic interior to accommodate 67 rooms across six stories of adaptively reimagined space. The project earned a 2020 AIA New Orleans Honor Award, and the building's proportions — deep window reveals, high ceilings, paneled plasterwork — gave Studio Shamshiri exactly the kind of architectural bones that reward a maximalist hand. Inside, the contrast between container and contents is the whole point. The library lounge goes full crimson lacquer from floor to ceiling, zebra-print carpet running beneath a mix of chartreuse wingbacks, a tufted navy sofa, and a veined onyx cocktail table — the effect closer to a private Creole gentleman's club than any conventional hotel parlor. The bar carries the same sensibility: coral-red millwork, brass fittings, tiger-print barstools with fringe trim, and dark floral wallpaper climbing toward gilded shelving. Guest rooms, by contrast, breathe — pale grey paneling, amber patterned carpet, and those signature wave-crested navy velvet headboards grounding each space with just enough drama to remind you where you are.

"Great intimate boutique hotel with great service! We stayed for a family vacation for 4 nights and enjoyed the suite, which was perfect for us. The hotel has a small lobby that was perfect for our kids, there is also a bar just next to it (with a speakeasy door to). The location is in the CBD, which has almost no noise, just consider that you'll need to walk/take the streetcars. breakfest was good and service was amazing."

"Could not believe how great it was based on the reviews! We stayed at Hotel Saint Vincent which was beautiful, but the amenities and room size here blew it out of the water! Not to mention a little cheaper! Will definitely be back!!"

"We had an excellent stay while visiting New Orleans at the Maison Métier hotel. This was an upgrade to our stay offered by their sister property next door. Ms. Coleman personally oversaw our upgrade and was very attentive and welcoming. We were very well attended to and cared for by the hotel staff at both properties (The Barnett next door). A must recommendation offering a peaceful respite and healing balm from some of the frenetic energy that is New Orleans."

"So close to five dots… I really enjoyed this hotel, and as Hyatt Globalists, we got a lot of added value by staying with our status. That being said, I’ll stick to universal experiences. The decor and spaces were so lovely. I adored the subtle snake motif and went on a hunt for them all over. The high ceilings are divine. The super cozy sitting room turns into a hidden bar through a wall or just through a painting. We enjoyed those cocktails a LOT. We really liked breakfast one day- we think the beignets are better than Cafe du Monde, and that day the service was great. Fun to use the rooftop pool and workout spaces next door at the sister hotel. But cons- having stayed at truly perfect Hyatts and other properties, they’ve got a bit of room to bloom here. The windows need soundproofing. The adjacent parking lot gate beeping, grounds workers, and street/street car noise is noticeable. It’s a shame because the interior hall is silent. Special services like morning room coffee and evening turndown service were hit and miss- we got each once- but should have received both twice (a did we need to make some sort of request somewhere? It would’ve been nice to know that if so). One day breakfast was painfully slow and there were mistakes on our order- no big deal as we get free breakfasts as Globalists, but for taking so long and being wrong, it was just not a five dot experience. The valet company was ridiculously slow- and though they apologized profusely for changing valet companies while we were there, it seemed liked they parked in MS. It should never take over 30 minutes to get a car. The presence of a door person is inconsistent- that person would probably help them on this issue if present. The hotel location is decent. If you can walk about a half mile in any direction you’re going to get to something interesting. The street car was always packed, so it didn’t work out as an option for us, but in another season, it might be just fine. Overall, super great character in this hotel, with a fantastic bar. We’ll come back but we’ll be asking more questions and picking much higher rooms."

"The hotel far exceeded expectations! I was able to apply a Guest of Honor award with my Hyatt stay, and this made the trip even more memorable. Fresh macarons and chocolates were on our pillow every night, Byron was able to get us a suite upgrade, the breakfast was delicious, and all the staff were so attentive. 10 out of 10 recommend!"
