PB hotel design editorial

Named for Andrew Higgins — the New Orleans boat builder whose Higgins landing craft the Allies used to storm the beaches of Normandy — this hotel carries a weight of historical obligation that most hospitality projects never have to reckon with. The Higgins Hotel, which sits directly adjacent to the National WWII Museum in New Orleans' Arts District, was purpose-built in 2019 as a companion property to that institution, designed by architect Eric Colbert with interiors by the New Orleans firm Malone Maxwell Borson Architects. The ten-story building's Art Deco-inflected facade — limestone cladding, vertical fins of illuminated white paneling, and a crown element that recalls 1930s setback towers — establishes a civic register appropriate to its neighbor. Inside, the 230 rooms carry the wartime reference lightly but consistently: navy and cream bed runners embroidered with WWII, brass torchiere floor lamps suggesting officer's quarters, and patterned carpets in the deep indigo and red of military dress uniforms. Dark-stained walnut case goods with brass ring pulls anchor the rooms against floor-to-ceiling windows framing either the Mississippi River bridge or the downtown skyline. The restaurant Café Normandie works a copper-pressed ceiling above fleur-de-lis upholstered dining chairs and navy banquettes — New Orleans and Normandy folded into one room. Above it all, the rooftop bar shifts register entirely into corrugated metal, exposed pipework, and vintage wooden propellers, the New Orleans skyline spread wide beyond open industrial-framed windows.

"Bathroom fixtures and couldn't be fixed or fixed poorly so it broke again the next day. Saw mice in the restaurant while eating breakfast. Prepaid for parking but given incorrect information on how to redeem to leave. Security was extremely rude when we called for help."

"This is a lovely place to stay, especially if you are visiting the awesome WWII museum! Very nice rooms and the staff is friendly and welcoming. The room we had was clean and quiet (a suite). The only drawback was that the on site restaurant has limited dinner hours---only over the weekends and one of the nights they just weren't open even then. But the food was good for breakfast and the one night we ate there, it was very good. A big plus is that the Museum actually "owns" the hotel in partnership with Hilton so they get some income from it. Overall a comfortable and very nice place to stay!"

"Our second time at The Higgins Hotel and every bit as good as the first. Outstanding sevrice from an accommodating and friendly staff, spotless accommodations and public spaces, good food in both Normandie and Rosie's and next door to the fabulous World War II Museum!"

"This is a fantastic hotel. It begins with Check In, where the front desk is particularly helpful any time of day (or night). Specifically, if you work with John in the morning at the desk, your excellent stay will be guaranteed! The rooms are clean, spacious, with excellent decor (art deco). The common space is equally outstanding, with a great bar (on the first floor, and a rooftop bar with fantastic views of the City), and a great restaurant. Food is delicious and priced better than expected. Equally important, the location is perfect for whatever you're traveling to NoLa for. The convention center is an easy 10 minute walk, there are more and more boutique restaurants in the neighborhood with excellent food quality, you are both far away and close enough to walk to Bourbon Street if that is your thing, and, most important, it is steps away from the WWII Museum, which will take you a minimum of two days to explore sufficiently. I have stayed in a number of nicer hotels in New Orleans. This hotel beats them all, and not by a small amount. #28 in NoLa? No way, this is #1."

"This a lovely hotel. It reminded us of upscale hotels in Europe. The common areas are very nice. Very attractive. The rooms are generally larger than what you would find in the normal room. Likewise for the bathrooms. It is very quiet. The coffee shop is attractive and good. It is across the street from the WWII museum. On the "-" side, there don't seem to be many restaurants in the area. We took Uber to the French Quarter. And, forget about the trolley. The trolley stop is a short walk from the hotel, but by the time the trolley reaches the stop near the hotel, the trolleys are just jammed. No room. Take an Uber."
