PB hotel design editorial

At the corner of Canal Street and Dauphine, where the French Quarter meets the Central Business District, a twelve-story Beaux-Arts palazzo that began life as the Maison Blanche department store in 1909 now carries one of hospitality's most recognizable names. The Ritz-Carlton New Orleans took over the building in 2000, preserving the facade's elaborate terracotta ornament — the deep cornice, the rusticated base, the rhythmic arcade of arched windows — while converting 452 rooms across interiors that draw on the layered material culture of Louisiana rather than generic grand-hotel convention. The public spaces carry that argument most convincingly. The lounge, visible in these images, works through coffered plasterwork ceilings, Ionic columns painted a warm grey-white, and low seating in patterned indigo velvet and woven linen — the atmosphere closer to a New Orleans gentlemen's club than a hotel lobby. The restaurant beneath its leaded skylight lantern pairs crystal branch chandeliers with slate-blue paneling and dark cherry wood floors, nailhead-trimmed leather dining chairs lending a deliberate gravity to the room. Guest rooms divide between two sensibilities: some lean into Carnival-season exuberance — magenta ikat armchairs, striped silk valances in jewel tones — while the renovated suites move toward a quieter register of brass four-poster frames, botanical wallcoverings in watercolor wash, and marble chimneypieces that acknowledge the building's age without performing it.

"I cannot possibly say enough good about this hotel. It's not an exaggeration to say that it truly embodies the subtle but real difference between a faceless 4-star experience and a 5-star luxury experience. For my birthday this week, I booked 3 nights on the Maison Orleans Club Level at the hotel. It really is a hotel within a hotel, with an expansive 4-room lounge laid out like an old plantation house with exquisite decor. The food and beverage presentations, as expected with a Ritz Club Lounge, are fantastic and laid out beautifully and promptly. The entire Club Concierge staff is special, shoutouts especially to Rachelle (sp? sorry if I missed!), Janis, Sunday, and Brenda. And they truly go out of their way to make your stay special. It's record hot here in NOLA this week, and I am recovering from cancer, yet I didn't feel left out or slighted at all not getting to go out while my husband did a little exploring in the French Quarter. Our room is great. Once again, the decor and feeling is uniquely New Orleans. If you are in need of a Club Queen/Queen, just be aware that there is no bathtub, just a large walk-in shower. But the shower is quite nice. The room is quiet, and the little touches like a Nespresso coffee maker in-room add a lot. Housekeeping is absolutely first-rate. Hotel management is also wonderful, with good communication before your stay. With a few health limitations, I had some concerns that I had to share, and everything was very well taken care of with a lot of grace. There were even small extra touches throughout our stay that just made it clear that these folks are brimming with genuine Southern hospitality. I cannot recommend this hotel more. I can't imagine staying anywhere else in NOLA, and I would come back for the hotel alone! T"

"Terrible service at the bar! Very disappointing for a brand I used to work for and loved! I mean how can you have a rude bartender in New Orleans? On the positive, waiter was wonderful."

"One of the reasons people choose The Ritz-Carlton is the expectation that, when something goes wrong, the staff will handle it with professionalism and urgency. Unfortunately, that wasn’t my experience. Less than an hour after checking out, I realized I had left a tumbler containing refrigerated medication in the refrigerator of my room. I called immediately, explained the situation, and stressed that the medication needed to stay cold. The associate took down all of my information and assured me someone would check the room and call me back within a few minutes. That call never came. Rather than waiting, I drove back to the hotel myself. I was simply told that nothing had been located, with no indication that anyone had seriously investigated or attempted to resolve the situation. Given how quickly I reported it after checkout, it’s difficult to believe that a tumbler sitting in a refrigerator could simply disappear. What frustrates me most isn’t that I accidentally left something behind—that was my mistake. It’s that the hotel failed at every step afterward. There was no sense of urgency despite the item containing medication, no follow-up despite a promised callback, and no effort to reassure me that anyone had thoroughly searched the room. This is exactly the type of situation where a luxury hotel has the opportunity to demonstrate exceptional service. Instead, I experienced poor communication, little accountability, and complete indifference. I’ve always associated The Ritz-Carlton with meticulous attention to detail and guest care. Sadly, this experience didn’t come close to living up to that reputation."

"A very comfortable and enjoyable stay at the Ritz New Orleans. The meeting facilities were great, the room was clean, very comfortable and quiet. You really can’t beat the location. The staff was helpful and did everything to ensure it was an enjoyable stay. Conference rooms were just as expected for The Ritz Carlton. I stayed for a few days and everything was delightful."

"I highly commend the housekeeping staff for making our stay truly memorable. We deeply appreciated the special decorations for our anniversary and the kind gift left for us. The towel swans and the heart made of rose petals on the bed were beautifully done and over the top! Additionally, I thoroughly enjoyed the fitness facility. The gym layout features three distinct rooms to choose from—a stationary bike room, a treadmill room, and a free weights area—which allowed me to get in some great workouts during my stay. Area for Improvement: Elevator Courtesy One notable concern I had during our stay was the lack of courtesy from the porters and handymen regarding elevator etiquette. On multiple occasions, as soon as the elevator doors opened, a staff member would try to rush in before letting guests exit. There is no need for such a rush; I sincerely hope the property can remind the team to always let guests step out of the elevator completely before attempting to board."
