PB hotel design editorial

Ground-up new construction rarely arrives in New Orleans without scrutiny — the city's relationship with its own architectural fabric is famously protective — yet Virgin Hotels New Orleans, which opened in 2021 in the Warehouse District, earns its place at 550 Baronne Street by leaning hard into the local rather than simply referencing it. Designed by Mathes Brierre Architects and CallisonRTKL, the 14-story, 165,000-square-foot concrete post-tensioned structure draws on Art Deco massing while interior designer Logan Killen Interiors floods the spaces with a Southern residential warmth that feels genuinely inhabited rather than curated from a distance. The lobby, visible in the images, telegraphs Killen's approach immediately: leopard-print chairs sit beside a boldly striped sofa anchored by a live-edge coffee table, teal walls carry locally commissioned artwork in a dense salon hang, and a brass-railed staircase curves upward past a graphic geometric floor. The effect is closer to a well-traveled Creole townhouse than a brand hotel. Guest rooms in the 238-chamber property continue this energy more quietly — burnt orange velvet bed frames, Serge Mouille-adjacent swing-arm sconces in brass and matte black, and a retro red Smeg mini-fridge tucked beside a glass bar niche. The rooftop pool deck, lined with coral-red chaises under fringed parasols and pink-striped cabanas, gives views clear to the Mississippi. The project achieved LEED Silver certification, a rare distinction in a city that often prizes patina over performance.

"Check in was fantastic, the bell hop Chris was hysterical and my room was comfortable. I was in an end unit and it was very quiet which I appreciated. I did have an issues with the temp in the shower and they quickly came to take care of it which was wonderful. My dinner downstairs was very good and the bartender who is French was fun to talk to on a slow evening. Throughout the hotel—not just at the pool—there were guests dressed in attire that I felt was inappropriate for the setting. I certainly understand that New Orleans is a fun and casual city, but there is still an expectation of a certain level of decorum at an upscale hotel. Saturday afternoon at the pool was particularly disappointing. I had planned to relax and watch the Saints game, loud and rowdy behavior, and the overall atmosphere made me uncomfortable enough that I ultimately left. My concern is not about anyone’s personal style or background, but rather the standard of atmosphere being maintained throughout the property. When choosing a hotel at this price point and caliber, I expect an environment that feels welcoming, polished, and appropriate in its common areas. While the property itself is beautiful, the guest experience did not reflect the upscale environment I expected. I hope management will consider whether some reasonable standards for attire and behavior in the hotel's shared spaces would help preserve the experience guests expect from a property of this level."

"Called this morning for a room with early check in and they had an availability so we would have time to enjoy the pool. Got here and was greeted by the greatest guys. Chris walked us to our room and was such a great help and so friendly. Looking forward to our time here."
