PB hotel design editorial

White clapboard buildings spread along the Miles River's edge in St. Michaels, Maryland, where the Inn at Perry Cabin has shaped Chesapeake Bay hospitality since the early nineteenth century — the original manor house built by a naval officer who served under Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry after the War of 1812, the name a tribute to his commander. Sir Bernard Ashley acquired the property in 1989 and transformed it under the Laura Ashley aesthetic, and subsequent stewardship by Orient-Express and then Belmond deepened both the physical plant and the culinary identity, bringing the room count to 78 across the low-slung Colonial Revival buildings that step gently down toward the water. The interiors, refreshed in recent years, work in a palette of pale grey and warm white — dark-stained four-poster beds with turned spindle details, plantation shutters filtering tidal light into bay-window alcoves furnished with wicker armchairs, sheer linen curtains pooling softly on carpeted floors. Abstract ink-wash diptychs hung above headboards are the one concession to contemporary sensibility in rooms that otherwise carry the composed atmosphere of a well-inherited house. Outside, a brick terrace furnished with teak dining chairs and white painted planters extends from French doors along the main building's garden facade, while Adirondack chairs face the river from a cropped lawn where a white gazebo frames views of working sailboats moving through the last of the evening light.

"Do not stay at Inn at Perry Cabin. Service and food quality are abominable. 20 years ago it was a top-flight property, but since Covid everything — other than the rates — has really fallen off. Dinner was a sparse salad that plainly had been sitting on the line for hours and an inedible “stuffed squash” that was burned. Breakfast was lukewarm, runny oats made with water. Staff shouting to each other down the hallways. In 2022, the place was a mess. Gave them another chance in 2026, and very sorry that I did. Find a B&B instead."

"We had called to book a reservation for “brunch” on Mother’s Day (May 2026) for a family gathering. And then upon arrival checked in with the hostess for “brunch.” But when we sat at our table, we were presented with a very expensive prix fixe menu for a full three-course meal (at $155 per person, + drinks/wine, a 20% gratuity added, and tax). We had booked for one type of meal and were presented with something totally different; and there were no other options. The staff taking our reservation over the phone never said that “brunch” (which we specifically had requested) was not available that day, nor did the hostess upon arriving. It was like a classic bait-and-switch scenario. The only reason we didn’t get up and leave is that we were meeting family who had driven out from Washington, D.C. in traffic (a couple of hours) and it would have been very difficult to ask them all to get back in their cars. But that wasn’t all. We found the food was mediocre at best …. As we sat down, the waiter, upon presenting the prix fixe menus, said we could not adjust the temperature (done-ness) of a meat order. We had to take it as it comes. (Seemed odd for an upscale restaurant.) The rack of lamb was extremely rare (almost inedible); the roast beef was tough and dry, not flaky, tender and juicy. (It appeared as if slices of beef had been cut in slabs from the raw rib roast and then cooked individually.) Scallops were OK, but nothing special. We got the impression some of the food was pre-prepared and then warmed up as needed (although we don't know for certain). The salad bar and dessert buffet, to their credit, were nicely done. However, in summary, if you’re looking for a place with a nice water-view setting (in good weather only), be aware the food, in our opinion, was mediocre and way over-priced. Also note, the standard credit card slip when paying includes a line to add a gratuity – you have to remember that a 20% gratuity was already included in the total. In reading the other low star reviews (I’d recommend scrolling down and reading them before booking), it seems the management at the Inn at Perry’s Cabin needs significant improvement. BTW, we contacted their guest services the next day. Now almost two weeks later, still no response, which is why we decided to write the review."

"This was our third year in a row traveling to property via boat. We again secured three deluxe suites for my parents, sister, and my wife and I. Goal was to celebrate Mother’s Day and sisters birthday. As always, the property was stunning, clean and well cared for. Although your rooms (76, 74, 77) are a long walk from dining room and main entrance, it’s worth it. Large suites with plenty of space and great water front balconies. The distance turned out to be a positive as we realized there was a wedding this weekend and massive amounts of children (likely due to Mother’s Day or wedding). Every experience was diluted by loud kids running and playing (breakfast, dinner, drink outside, etc). If you’re looking for an adult mature experience reconsider this option. Further, 50% of the staff seemed brand new. Literally as if today was thier 1st day. Our questions were greeted with what felt like sheer terror “deer in headlight” reactions. Come across as super unprofessional and a bit rude. Not at all what we have experienced on our many previous visits. The docks are nice but no cleats or shore power and it was a struggle to get dockhand assistance. Thankfully the valet ran out to help at last minute. It’s seems thier full staff may not yet be in place as we are here weekend of May 9. As always we booked spa and massage for all of us. Great staff and facilities. Gym is a little small but perfect for our needs. Shuttle team is excellent. When booking always ask if there is a wedding or private event as it will consume the property. Flowers, chairs, tents, pictures, golf carts, relentless noise, associated with wedding will be everywhere. You can’t escape it. Im disappointed to summarize this experience as average but at this price point almost $9000 much more is expected."

"Amazing views and amenities. However, the staff and their willingness to go the extra mile sets this Resort above others. Just one example , I lost my jacket at the resort . The staff found it and mailed it home to me. Thank you Perry Inn ! I would recommend this place to anyone who values friendly knowledgeable and a helpful staff . The tea and coffee in the lobby were also much appreciated."

"This was a weekend trip off season. We've never been to this area of Maryland before. There really isn't much to do especially this time of year, however the Inn At Perry Cabin seems to be the place to be in St Michael's at this time of year, and it was quite busy. There were many young couples, and young families, and there was a conference too. The property is well kept with a trail around the property, plenty of Adirondeck chairs to soak in the sun and savor the sunrise. The best thing about this property is it's staff. EVERYONE from valet, to consierge, to waitstaff, spa personnel, housekeeping, and grounds keepers are conscientious, accomidating, friendly, and just good people. The grounds this time of year are still maintained, and interesting. The meals we had on site were excellent and they are always willing to make dietary adjustments. The rooms are spacious, we had a suite, but they are a little tired. The mattresses could use an update, and the couch was a lumpy, the rug was frayed. They have a small mini-fridge, but it doesn't have a freezer section, and there is no microwave. Our upstairs neighbors were very loud, and we could hear them through the floor. There was a small balcony off the room where you can have a cup of coffee and watch the sunrise as long as you bundled up. We booked massages, and I can honestly say, I've never had a better one. The technicians were excellent. I didn't know what to expect when we booked the trip, but I was pleasantly surprised!"
