PB hotel design editorial

Along the Fort Point Channel edge of Boston's Seaport District, where the harbor opens toward the Rose Kennedy Greenway, a 36-floor curtain-wall tower clad in reflective blue-green glass and granite panels announced the InterContinental Boston when it opened in 2006 — one of the earliest bets on a neighborhood that has since become the city's most transformed. The building, designed by Elkus Manfredi Architects, rises in two connected volumes above a low podium that steps down to the harborwalk, its outdoor terrace furnished with wicker seating and market umbrellas creating a genuinely public-facing edge rare among large convention-adjacent hotels. The 424 guestrooms, updated in a recent renovation, run to a palette of warm taupe and slate grey — geometric diamond-patterned carpet, walnut-stained case goods, slim black four-poster frames in the suites — comfortable without being particularly distinctive. The bar space downstairs tells a different story: end-grain parquet flooring, arched openings fitted with decorative ironwork grilles, persimmon-painted walls, and oversized red pendant shades suspended over a curved zinc-topped bar give the room a Beaux-Arts warmth that the tower's corporate glass exterior never quite prepares you for. The waterfront terrace, sheltered by a steel pergola structure and set with red-draped bistro tables, commands views across to the Rowes Wharf arch and remains one of the more agreeable places to eat outdoors in a city that has historically underused its harbor.

InterContinental Boston, an IHG Hotel Reviews

"Location is fantastic. Rooms for families of four are on the small side of things. The doors connecting rooms are very thin, so be ready to enjoy the conversations of your next door neighbours, even if they are not speaking loudly. They also have this security or maintenance person patrolling the corridors with the loudest walkie-talkie ever, so be ready to be woken up (he/she should wear an ear-piece so that we don't wake everybody up). The fitness room is also nice. So why the 3-star rating? This place is so overpriced it's not even funny. You could argue it's the market, but the price for what you get is seriously insane (70+ countries visited, so not my first rodeo). Will definitely stay elsewhere next time I'm in town"

"The pool was small with no ventilation. I visited Nashville same hotel which was a very different experience… bar and great pool area, especially to enjoy during summer time. Breakfast was also plane could had been improved but coffee was delicious. Staff very attentive and the site in general immaculate."

"We had a fabulous 3 day break here. From help at the front with bags; polite and cheerful reception staff, a delightful room with a lovely view on the 9th floor and wonderful space to relax in the 12th floor lounge - this break was just lovely. Room was well appointed. Immaculately clean. Linens were decadent. View was a delight. I wished I could visit weekly! Many thanks to all the highly trained staff who work so hard to make the experience for the visitor so lovely. It is appreciated."

"Intercontinental is amazing. I’ve stayed here before and this was even more impressive. Big thank you to the staff, especially thankful for the excellent customer service from Inilta at the front desk. She took very good care of us and the room was perfect. Looking forward to our next stay at the Intercontinental."
