PB hotel design editorial

Harvard Square has never been easy territory for hotel design — the pressure to defer to one of America's most architecturally self-conscious neighborhoods while still asserting a legible identity of its own is a brief that has defeated many. The Charles Hotel, which has anchored Bennett Street since 1985, handles this tension through a nine-story red-brick massing whose stepped roofline and recessed upper floors acknowledge the surrounding Cambridge streetscape without dissolving into it. The lobby sets a different register entirely: a richly paneled space with a slatted wood ceiling, geometric wool carpet in cream and tobacco, floor-to-ceiling bookshelves densely packed with worn volumes, and deep crimson accent walls that give the whole room the atmosphere of a serious private library rather than a hotel reception. The 294 guestrooms carry a New England collegiate sensibility updated with quiet confidence — blue plaid carpets, dark four-poster beds with paneled upholstered headboards, Windsor-style side chairs in walnut, and leather wingbacks that feel borrowed from a faculty common room. Original artwork commissioned from Cambridge and Boston artists hangs throughout, including large-format graphic works visible in the suites. The Henrietta's Table restaurant extends this vernacular into its dining room, with painted sage-green cabinetry, wide-plank oak floors, and coffered white ceilings that evoke a well-kept New England farmhouse more than a hotel dining room.

"This hotel unfortunately has zero customer service . I have now Been waiting for somebody to reply to my email for nearly three days . I Was due to arrive tomorrow 1st March with my partner for a birthday celebration. I was emailed with information on Thursday 26th Feb from the hotel stating the elevator would be out of use during our stay, I was offered free cancellation (refund ) if I felt the hotel no longer met mine and my Partners requirements which I was grateful for . I replied immediately to the email asking for the refund with sadly no reply . I have now today 28th feb cancelled my booking with still no refund or reply from this hotel . Money now just simply wasted most disappointing as I was so looking forward to mine and my partners birthday trip to Prague . I’m currently very upset and deflated as it was such a lot of money to loose ."

"We were recommended this hotel by others we knew that had stayed here before!Check in was smooth they held our luggage in a room because we were on an early flight !we did request if we could maybe get in room any earlier but unfortunately it was denied but thats fine!our room was on third floor room 302 ! The room was a decent size with large bed and two chairs to sit at we had small refrigerator with mini bar altho we didn't use this!we had a small kettle and cups and some water !! Bed was a bit hard for us but everyone likes a different bed we know that !comfy pillows and duvets !! Room was warm and lovely !!Bathroom was small but fine! The main hall way between bathroom and bedroom is a large space u can put cases luggage etc but whats missing is somewhere to hang large winter coats etc no hooks anyway and not practical to hang in wardrobe !could do with hanging areas in main hall way to put outdoor stuff on !! Breakfast was great good choice of foods of all kinds!! Staff were good especially helpful and friendly were the dark haired guy on reception who really helped us and another young blonde guy!!others ok !Now the problems we did have was noise level we were third floor up 302 and we had a real problem one night of people in room next too us with lous noise level !now im not sure if rooms are just not sound proofed at all or we just had the noisest people ever but they had music either from TV or something else loudly playing with lots of people in room from 11 to nearly 3.30 am and thats all we could hear it was so awful !so we had real lack of sleep !and because reception shuts at a certain time we had no one to complain to !!also as much as its January we opened the window for air one evening and it was so noisy all night till at least 5 am at points !so beware if u stay here when u actually need a window open in hotter times etc and your room is facing road way its noisy !"

"I stayed here for three nights in early December. The hotel is in an old building, but it felt cozy and well-maintained. My room was a junior suite, and every time I came back it felt as if I were stepping into a period drama. The breakfast was lovely and the thing that really put this hotel over the top was the kindness and helpfulness of the staff. Everytime I left or returned, I was greeted with a warm smile. The room was massive. The bathroom has been updated. It is not super modern, but everything was clean and very well-maintained. In terms of location, I couldn't ask for more. It was less than a five minute walk to the Charles Bridge, and one minute to the streetcar and bus stop. I was able to get all over Prague and return at the end of the day so easily. Since it is in the tourist area, there was street noise at night. However, having stayed near Old Town, the noise was much less in this part of town. There are plenty of lovely cafes, bakeries, and restaurants within steps of the hotel."

"Fabulous location - beautiful hotel room for two couples. Plenty of private space for both couples and a common sitting room. Unique experience. The noise level in one of the rooms was loud until about 5 AM. So if you are a light sleeper this might not be the place for you. Also the receptionist was not overly welcoming. But the location of the hotel and the room itself were great."
