PB hotel design editorial

Positioned at the edge of Boston Common where Avery Street meets the Theater District, the granite-clad tower that houses The Ritz-Carlton Boston sits within one of the most historically layered corners of American civic life — the gold dome of the Massachusetts State House visible from upper-floor suites, framed through floor-to-ceiling windows as a daily reminder of the city's particular relationship between power and place. The building, completed in 2001 as part of the larger Millennium Place development designed by Elkus Manfredi Architects, rises thirty-plus floors above the Common, its PostModern massing trading the delicacy of the original 1927 Ritz-Carlton on Arlington Street for a more assertive urban presence. Inside, the interiors work through a palette of warm taupe, charcoal, and walnut-toned timbers — evident in the guest rooms, where tufted leather headboards in cognac and saddle brown anchor beds positioned toward Boston Common views, and coffered ceiling details lend suites a residential weight that the exteriors only hint at. The bar carries a confident mid-century club atmosphere: bronze-trimmed backlit shelving, leather barrel-back stools, tufted banquettes in caramel and mocha, the whole room wrapped in book-matched walnut paneling that deepens under amber pendant light. The Artisan Bistro dining room strikes a more relaxed register — reclaimed oak communal tables, painted Thonet-style chairs, and a chalkboard wall that lets the space carry the feeling of a well-considered Parisian brasserie rather than a hotel restaurant.

"We are loyal RC guests, and have stayed at this location several times. This time was a miss. $780 for a king suite, which was missing several key amenities, including a coffee maker in the room (although there was a sign where coffee should have been). There was no QR code for in room dining, and no way to order in the Marriott app, so we didn't order. The doormen were friendly, but after removing the luggage from our rental car, they made no effort to bring the luggage to our room. We were on our own. When we went to register, we noticed a coffee urn next to the desk. I said, "Oh look, coffee!" No, I was told, it was hot cider. Also good, but the agent told me they were getting ready to take it away. So, too bad for us. The registration agent had no clue that we were repeat guests, and was surprised when I told her we'd stayed there many times before. This was our fourth or fifth visit. Once we got to our room, we had no less than three unwelcome entries by staff members who did not knock prior to using their keys. Just a really bizarre series of missteps that, for a premium price, delivered a truly "meh" experience."

"We enjoyed our time here as a home base for a visit to Boston. The service was very friendly. The room was clean and had everything we needed. The location is fantastic, less than a 5-minute walk to both the Boylston Station (green line) and Chinatown Station (orange line). The Ckib access was well with, pricing a nice place to chill out, plus food and snacks throughout the day. Lunch was sandwiches, soup, cheese, salad, etc. Dinner was chicken, potatoes, broccolini, cheese. Breakfast was oatmeal, eggs, bacon, yogurt, fruit, muffins, bagels. Late night dessert had 3 options. And then constant popcorn, cookies, chocolates, granola bars, soda, wine, liquor, beer. A fantastic experience all around."

"I stayed in boston at the W for a doc appt, they scheduled heart surgery. A Week later so when I came back I booked the ritz because I thought it would be a better recovery. I called ahead asked for a quiet room and told them I am a titanium member and asked for a bigger room as my kids are coming. I should get automatic upgrade based on my level. The staff was not like the ritz normally treat us. They were dull, not helpful and gave me a loud room with no upgrade. At the w down the street I got upgraded and the beds weren’t double beds. I have been to ritz all over and this is the worst service I have ever had. No welcome gift, just below average. I almost want to switch to the w because I know they will take care of me."

"A short two-night stay. The busy lobby and greeting were a bit impersonal - for a Ritz-Carlton, I felt that a more personal, warm touch could be provided. The room was large, clean, but again I found it quite sterile in design. The hotel is not by any means bad, and the location is excellent, but it seems very corporate in nature and lacks the true luxury touches that would really make a stay stand out. Stay here, and you will get a consistent quality, but nothing that is really special compared to other luxury hotels, and Ritz-Carlton’s that I have stayed in."

"My three night midweek stay at the Ritz-Carlton Boston had a rough air con start — that quickly was remedied. And then it was pretty flawless. #boston #ritzcarlton #ritzcarltonboston #upgrade #airconfail #airconbliss #servicerecovery My NUAs were declined, but I wasn’t surprised since it seemed almost sold out. The hotel did bungle the original room air con, but they recovered with a new upgraded view room (even while almost sold out) with vastly better air con while I was away at dinner. They also offered a $100 F&B credit for the inconvenience, which I thought was more than fair. After coming back from dinner that first night, it was a pretty flawless stay. The air con remained around 64-66 F for the rest of my stay. The room is very comfortable, and they even brought 2 fans for me to be safe. They had a lovely chocolates amenity with extra bottles of water brought up from my original room as per my #prearrivalchecklist, as well. Shower pressure was almost too strong! But I loved it. WiFi was a solid 40 Mbps, but then I do expect more from a luxury hotel. In room dining breakfast and dinner both were great. I had one lunch at the Artisan Bistro restaurant and they couldn’t have been kinder — even getting me an omelette despite it being past time for breakfast. I enjoyed drinks one night at the beautiful lobby bar. Always a pleasure. I spent more time away from the hotel than usual visiting my family in the area. Another very pleasant stay at the Ritz-Carlton Boston. Considering the Four Seasons One Dalton is the only other luxury hotel in town that will guarantee my 65 F air con, I am very happy with the Ritz-Carlton. The FS is newer, but I vastly prefer the RC location (and Bonvoy credit)."
