PB hotel design editorial

At 170 Charles Street, where Beacon Hill's residential streets meet the Charles River Esplanade, a four-story red brick building with a softly curved corner façade and deep-set bronze-framed windows carries the confident proportions of early twentieth-century Boston commercial architecture. The Whitney Hotel Boston, which opened in 2017, was developed within a structure that sits comfortably among its older neighbors — the adjacent Massachusetts General Hospital buildings and the nineteenth-century rowhouses climbing the hill behind — while presenting something deliberately new: a ground-floor entry framed in dark steel and glass that signals a different interior register than the brick above. Inside, the design palette holds a tight conversation between navy, warm tan, brass, and off-white, executed with enough restraint to avoid period-room pastiche. Guest rooms are furnished with channel-tufted navy headboards, gold-framed mirrors, and layered geometric carpeting in grey and cream — the effect closer to a well-appointed private apartment than a conventional hotel room. The bar and restaurant spaces pull the scheme into livelier territory: herringbone oak floors give way to geometric encaustic tile beneath the bar, cognac leather stools line a white quartz counter, and deep navy walls hung with gilt-framed contemporary portraits anchor the dining room. Coffered white ceilings and Stilnovo-influenced multi-arm chandeliers in black and brass complete a room that balances clubby warmth with a studied sharpness of detail.

"Another fantastic stay at The Whitney! Whenever we get the chance to spend a night in the city, this is always our first choice. The location is unbeatable for exploring Boston, and the rooms are consistently comfortable and welcoming. We especially love ending our evenings at the bar—it’s the absolute perfect spot for a nightcap. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a reliable, high-end stay in the heart of the city."

"Cute and clean. Since I’m a world of Hyatt member, they upgraded my room to a suite! Perfect location. Close to literally everything!"

"I stayed at the Whitney Hotel during my business trip to Boston in March 2026. I was attracted by the location and previous customer reviews on Google, Tripadvisor and Booking.com. Here are my key takeaways: 1) The hotel is fresh, modern and stylishly decorated. Beds are comfortable and water pressure is decent. All basic things work well. Nothing looks worn out or outdated. Linen, bathrobes etc. are of high guality. Everything is clean. Complimentary cookies, fruits and ginger ale on each floor are a nice touch. Location is excellent to explore Boston and Cambridge. 2) There is a hospital nearby, and the hotel sits at a busy crossing next to a metro station. Despite quality soundproofed windows, you will hear sirens and traffic/train noise in the room. 3) Central heating unit on the attic of the hotel (new building) makes a low, vibrating noise that is impossible to block with earplugs. I stayed in top floor right under the unit at room 518. Maintenance was able to locate the source, but they could do nothing to the noise itself. 4) Fitness room is tiny and in the basement/1st floor. During my 4-night stay, two out of four work-out machines were unable to connect to the hotel wlan, and hence did not work. Staff was not able to solve the issue. 5) In addition to the actual room bill, the hotel made an extra charge to my credit card that was not supposed to be there. I noticed this a few days after the visit, and the front office quickly solved the issue. Conclusion: the hotel seems like a solid 4-star establishment but for my liking it turned out to be overrated. Front office staff is friendly but do not reach the level of truly exceptional hotels, and more importantly, often lack necessary mandate to make decisions. Frankly, I expected more based on previous reviews, two Michelin keys, and price (500USD per night for a standard room)."

"I travel to Boston frequently and am thrilled to have found The Whitney. Location is perfect — on Beacon Hill, steps from a footbridge across to Charles River path. Service impeccable. Rooms are lovely and beautifully appointed. Quiet, residential feel. Staff terrific! All was perfect. I will definitely be back."
