PB hotel design editorial

At the crest of Beacon Hill, where the Massachusetts State House dome catches the afternoon light, a ten-storey Beaux-Arts commercial building completed in 1903 by William Gibbons Preston has quietly become one of Boston's most considered small hotels. XV Beacon was carved from that structure in 2000, its ornate cast-iron cornice and rusticated limestone base preserved while the interiors were remade to a residential standard that was genuinely unusual for American boutique hotels at the turn of the millennium. The facade visible in the images tells the story clearly: blackened ironwork at street level giving way to brick laid in a pronounced herringbone pattern on the upper floors, the whole composition landing somewhere between Gilded Age commercial gravity and private club discretion. Across its 63 rooms and suites, the design sustains a studied duality — suites fitted with working gas fireplaces set within ebonized millwork walls sit alongside lighter rooms dressed in canopied four-poster beds, fern-patterned armchairs, and black-and-white photography in simple molded frames. The palette throughout runs from warm taupe to deep navy, grounded by neutral carpeting and crown molding that keeps the architecture present without dominating. The restaurant and bar maintain the same register: coffered cream ceilings, white Corian bar surfaces, large drum pendants in warm gold, and diamond-pattern wine storage built flush into plastered walls — confident craft rather than statement-making design.

XV Beacon Reviews

"My partner and I spent a long weekend at XV Beacon, and overall, the hotel has a lot of wonderful touches that make the stay feel special. We loved the complimentary bath salts, premium in-room coffee, bottled water, and even the fireplace — all small luxuries that added to the experience. The service throughout our stay was exceptional, and the staff went above and beyond to make us feel welcome. Our first night’s pillows were not great, but thankfully the hotel offers an impressive pillow menu with 8+ options, which made a huge difference. I also forgot my sound machine, and to my surprise, they had one available complimentary. It really feels like they’ve thought of everything a traveler might need. We like to unwind in our room after long days of walking, and this is where the stay fell a little short. The in-room couch was extremely worn and uncomfortable — clearly very heavily used — and the room overall could benefit from some updates. Mooo…, the on-site restaurant, was fantastic. We especially loved their $1 oysters at lunchtime — fresh, delicious, and a great deal. Overall, XV Beacon has exceptional service and thoughtful amenities, but the rooms could use a refresh to match the rest of the experience."

"XV Beacon feels like slipping into a luxury Beacon Hill manor: cozy, historic, and ultra-elevated. Every detail is intentional. The oversized towels, cashmere throws, furniture, and in-room fireplace created a level of comfort that felt residential. The bathroom had a Toto washlet which was so great, and a bath salt menu that made a great relaxing evening. I had to work for a full day in the room during my stay, and for the first time ever, I was excited to work from a hotel room. Between the fireplace and the plush seating, it felt like working from a sophisticated living room rather than a guest room. Dinner at Mooo… was another highlight, friendly bar service, good group sitting at the bar, the best lobster bisque in the city, and, to my delight, a delicious non-alcoholic sparkling Riesling! Very few places offer NA wine by the glass, and it was so good, I was so grateful! My favorite detail was “Beacon the Burner,” the stuffed dog that came with the room! It was whimsical, comforting, and perfectly on brand for a hotel that leans into its residential charm. It’s those small touches that make XV Beacon feel special. It was a truly stunning stay. Warm, polished, and memorable in every way. Thank you XV Beacon Hotel!!"

"After reading all the great reviews we were looking forward to our stay. The atmosphere of the hotel is very dark, dreary and depressing. The rooms natural light is blocked by the building next door. Couldn’t figure out how to adjust the temperature. Impossible to put makeup on in the bathroom light. The bed was the most uncomfortable I have ever slept on and kept me up all night with back pain. Needless to say we won’t be back."

"We have just stayed 3 nights in this hotel room 602 Everything about it is excellent. The location is perfect for the lovely Beacon Hill area and the park, also not far from the wharfs. Our room was clean, comfortable with every amenity, lovely decor and relaxing to put up your feet after a days sight seeing . There was a little road noise but hey its a buzy city. We enjoyed having room service for breakfast and one meal .We were served quickly and the food and delivery were very good . We asked for hot water a couple of times and we were quickly given our own charming kettle ( We are British and tea was calling ...not from the bay!!) The bar and resturant have a great atmosphere with good cocktails and food . The staff were friendly and helpful throughout . But a big shout out to the concierge team who were fantastic from to getting us into a resturant of our choice ( which was booked out ) to helping with general infomation and printing our boarding passes. All together a great place to stay and I would highly recommend Thank you to the staff"
