PB hotel design editorial

Perched above a private beach on Chatham's Pleasant Bay, where salt marsh gives way to the open Atlantic, the shingled main building that anchors Chatham Bars Inn has held its position since 1914 — a sprawling Colonial Revival hunting lodge commissioned by a group of Boston sportsmen that gradually evolved into one of New England's most enduring resort hotels. The main house, with its red-brick chimneys, gambrel rooflines, and white-painted wraparound verandas, carries the unhurried confidence of a property that has never felt compelled to reinvent itself. Across the grounds, a village of cedar-shingled cottages steps down toward the water, the ensemble reading from the bay as a prosperous Cape Cod shoreline community rather than a single institutional block. Inside, the interiors lean into a considered version of New England domestic comfort — cream and warm sand walls, sisal-blend carpeting, pine and fruitwood furniture, blue-and-white printed draperies that track the water outside every window. Guest rooms divide between two distinct registers: the upper-house rooms with their low eaves, ceiling fans, and framed Cape Cod charts feel genuinely cottage-like, while the beachside accommodations drop the palette to powder blue with bay windows fitted with plantation shutters that frame the harbor directly. The main dining room, lined with tall glazed windows overlooking the moored sailboats at dusk, furnishes its tables with Queen Anne chairs and cream linen in a manner closer to a well-run country club than a designed restaurant — which, at Chatham Bars Inn, is precisely the point.

"CAVEAT - it is high season Pulled into the Chatham Bars Inn about 6:00 pm on a Thursday and it was bumping. Felt like I was checking in amongst a private party. Turns out the crowd was over-flow from the lawn bar overlooking the channel and ocean beyond. Apparently this is the the place to see and be seen in Chatham for cocktail hour. Next day we tried the beach bar for lunch -not possible-closed for private event. Saturday - almost walked through wedding nuptials on way to the beach to catch an evening boat tour. I used to come here back “in the day” and the CBI has had a Glow-Up. It is still a beautiful property with magnificent views, and exceptional landscaping, but I miss the understated, New England elegant, yet rustic ambience. The flip side of that, for those who want such, is an expanded private beach and pool with snappy and cheerful staff service to bring drinks and snacks right to your beach chair and a full service spa. I feel perhaps CBI management may have over extended the amenities and guest density, but the property is large enough to rearrange for those faults. Some in our party experienced hot water outage and AC outage, but CBI made amends. A shout out to CBI staff - service was always speedy and friendly!"

"CBI is one of the prettiest beach resorts anywhere in the world. Our most recent prior beach trip was to the Maldives and this beat that in terms of amenities, service, overall atmosphere, and accommodations. I am recommending CBI to all of my family and friends who enjoy (and can afford) this 5 star property. The Farm dinner was exceptional and the dinner at STARS was also excellent. Walking around the resort felt safe and intimate - and the cottages feel more like you're staying at your friend's beautiful home. Noise was not a problem. The Hydrangea Class at the Farm was educational and enjoyable (though the hotel should consider running a shuttle for participants). My only negative comment is that some of the servers were wonderful (Kate!! at the beach), but a few were dismissive/going through the motions (though not outright rude). Evening cocktail hour was also somewhat difficult to get a drink, even if standing at the bar. Those were the only 2 weakness in an otherwise 10/10 experience. We will be back!"

"Overall the hotel is in an amazing location and somewhere that could be amazing, but it is often over crowded with local events and weddings and it sometimes feels the residents of the hotel are second priority. Some staff go well beyond the call of duty , particularly the car shuttle service. The rooms were nice but had faults, The hotel is not cheap, so versus the amount you pay for what you receive , I would lower the rating of this hotel."

"Beautifully located and very pretty but service is very impersonal and the hotel is way too busy/over run at sun set and packed at lunch. A good base for Chatham but not relaxing/as premium as the price point suggests."

"The hotel is in a beautiful setting . The staff were friendly and attentive . The courtesy car into Chatham at night was a great service. We were disappointed in the location of our cottage. It was right in front of the cocktail / pizza bar , the noise level and intrusion of people taking photos of the view right outside our door/ patio area every night spoilt our stay . That said, the bar manager Matt did apologise and gave us his contact details if it got too much. We did raise our concerns with hotel reception. Although we couldn’t be moved , the hotel did waver our extra charges incurred during our stay . The cottage was a bit tired , could do with some maintenance. The blind was broken in the bedroom, the sofa bed needs cleaning and a better mattress . You could feel every spring! Not great for a five star hotel. Despite this, it’s a lovely hotel and would stay again but not in the same cottage."
