PB hotel design editorial

Right on Nantucket Harbor's edge, where Easton Street meets the working waterfront, a collection of grey-shingled buildings arranged around a croquet lawn has served as the island's most coveted address since 1946. The White Elephant earned its name from the eccentric confidence of its original owner, Hettie Anderson, who gambled that a proper resort hotel could survive on an island then known mainly for summer fishing camps. That wager proved correct, and the property — now comprising around 54 rooms and suites across its main building and a cluster of harbor-facing cottages — remains the standard against which Nantucket hospitality measures itself. The interiors carry the atmosphere of a well-inherited summer house rather than a managed resort: cream walls trimmed with egg-and-dart borders, leather headboards with nailhead detailing, gas fireplaces framed by white-painted wood mantels, and framed black-and-white sailing photography that situates the rooms firmly in their nautical context. French doors open directly onto private balconies where wicker chairs face the marina, the water close enough that you can hear the rigging. The dining room, updated with Sputnik pendants in blackened steel and woven grass clerestory shades, introduces a lighter contemporary register without abandoning the coastal vernacular that the shingled massing outside establishes so completely. Teak chaise longues on the harbor lawn complete a picture that Nantucket's preservation codes have, fortunately, made almost impossible to alter.

White Elephant Nantucket Reviews

"I researched hotels for hours and hours for the perfect place to stay in Nantucket as it was our first visit. Ultimately deciding on the white elephant because of location and the hype that has always been around this hotel. I'm from South Florida and I travel a lot and I stay in a lot of nice hotels. I have absolutely no idea why there is so much hype around this hotel, other than the amazing customer service. Looking at pictures online this hotel seems much bigger than it actually is and the property looks much bigger as well, so that was disappointing upon arrival. The rooms and hotel itself are just really average and nothing great (please see my picture attached) Literally the vanity in the bathroom was rotting away at the bottom. The bathroom was so tiny and not what you you expect when paying almost $2000 a night for a suite We had a horrible view of the top of the structure that covers the restaurant - maybe if we would've rented one of the cottages our experience would've been better. They serve complementary wine and cheese from 4 to 5, which you would think would be served until five and replenished should the cheese and wine run out before 5 - especially at the rate charged to stay there. Apparently that is not the case , if they run out at 4:40, there is just simply no more. I passed by at that time and the cheese was already gone so I stopped by the front desk to let them know and was told that when it runs out there is no more, so if you are staying there in the future, you better get there at four if you want cheese and wine. Other than that experience, with customer service the staff was really amazing at this hotel - at the front desk, the valets, concierge, the drivers etc.. they were all really great went above and beyond. However, calling from your room to the front desk if you needed extra towels or anything like that was a little bit different experience. We had to call 3 times for an iron and 2 times for towels - again not what you would except . I don't write a ton of reviews, but wanted to write this one in case anyone else was traveling to Nantucket for the first time and reviewing hotels like I did. There are other hotels that are in close proximity to town that are probably much less expensive and just as nice."

"Here is the White Elephant review in a copy-friendly format: ⸻ I am extremely disappointed with our stay at White Elephant Nantucket, especially considering we paid over $3,500 for the weekend. Our room faces a bar directly across the street that blasts loud music until 11:00 PM every night. This is not what anyone expects when paying luxury hotel prices. We came to Nantucket to relax and enjoy a peaceful getaway, but instead we were forced to listen to nightclub-level noise every evening. What makes this even more frustrating is that we were never warned about the noise issue when booking. Had we known, we would have requested a different room or chosen another property altogether. For a property that markets itself as a luxury destination, guest comfort and sleep should be a priority. The lack of transparency regarding the significant noise disturbance was unacceptable. Unfortunately, based on this experience, I would not recommend White Elephant Nantucket to friends, family, or clients. I also plan to share my experience with others in Colorado who may be considering a stay, including at the new Aspen location."

"We booked a last minute trip to Nantucket, and I cannot recommend this hotel enough! The location is perfect - walking distance from all the local shops and restaurants. The room was spacious and clean with a gorgeous view. Every single staff member was incredibly gracious and friendly. They have a local shuttle which takes you into town that was super helpful too - we loved our driver, Keneil! We had drinks at Brant Point Grill which was fantastic as well. I cannot wait to come back again!!"

"We loved our stay at the White Elephant. The pre-arrival concierge was very helpful in answering our questions. The concierge at the hotel was very accommodating, providing transportation to our dinner reservations as needed and scheduling a taxi to the airport. We took the shuttle to Topper's one night and loved it. I would suggest making your own reservations beforehand. Most all things are walkable from the hotel. We stayed in a One Bedroom Residence and appreciated the extra space. The hotel's location, service, and amenities are the things that would bring us back to the White Elephant!"
