PB hotel design editorial

A $60 million commission in downtown Birmingham, Michigan might have produced something safely civic and forgettable. Instead, Chicago firm Booth Hansen delivered a limestone-and-glass facade with the composed authority of a European grand hotel transplanted to the Midwest's most quietly prosperous Main Street address. The Daxton Hotel opened in 2021 with 151 rooms and an ambition that extended well beyond its corner plot at 298 S. Old Woodward Ave — including fifth-floor private terraces and a second-level green roof courtyard that soften what might otherwise feel like a formal urban statement. Inside, KTGY Simeone Deary Design Group navigated the tension between glamour and livability with considerable skill. Guest rooms pair dark leather platform beds and ebonized millwork with ornate plaster crown molding and oversized botanical wallcoverings set behind arched niches — a collision of gothic romance and contemporary restraint that somehow holds together. The bar is the property's most theatrical gesture: a veined black marble island at its center, surrounded by a geodesic steel-and-brass ceiling structure that pulls daylight through the space like a lantern. Throughout, a 400-plus piece art collection curated by Saatchi Art anchors the interiors in something more considered than mere decoration — large mixed-media portraits in the restaurant and graffiti-inflected sculpture in the bar give the whole property a cultural seriousness that earned it a MICHELIN Key designation before Hilton's Curio Collection came calling in 2024.

Daxton Hotel Birmingham, Curio Collection by Hilton Reviews

"We booked a suite with Hilton Honors points. Checked in and were told we could not have the room we booked due to HVAC issues. After three hours we were put into regular room and told we would be moved after the HVAC issues were resolved. The next day after multiple complaints to the front desk we got into our room later that day. By the way, the Boston Celtics were staying at the hotel that weekend and checked out right before we got into the suite we booked. We received a letter upon check out promising our points back within a few days. Nine months later after multiple emails and calls no resolution. Ian Fleming, Director of Operations of the Daxton promised by email a resolution by the following week, that was over a month ago. Send another request on Monday still no response! I am a Diamond reserve member and this is unacceptable. Hilton and Daxton customer service is terrible and not focused on the customer at all. My next step is Better Business Bureau."

"We had a wonderful stay at this hotel. The location is excellent, with plenty of restaurants and shops within walking distance. The property is beautiful, with impressive artwork throughout. Check-in was quick and easy with the digital key. The hotel was spotless, our room was spacious, the bed was very comfortable, and the staff was friendly and welcoming. We also appreciated the complimentary pantry on each floor, stocked with bottled water, soft drinks, snacks, chips and light bites. Valet parking is $40 per night, or you can use the 24-hour parking garage behind the Daxton for $10 overnight self-parking (no in-and-out privileges). The happy hour was a great value, featuring half-price cocktails and appetizers. Overall, we highly recommend this hotel and would happily stay here again."

"The Daxton hotel in downtown Birmingham has very friendly staff. My husband and I live in the community and we walk by a couple days a week and we are always greeted by the valet/door staff, especially Jacob B and Gabe S. Our dog loves to go there for a homemade dog biscuit, made on site! If dogs could talk, he would say how delicious the biscuits are!"

"Wow! What an absolute delight of a hotel right in the middle of downtown Birmingham. What a fun, artsy, quirky upscale hotel full of unique touches. The lobby is packed with energy and art and was buzzing when we checked in. We were warmly welcomed with sparkling wine, nice touch! Our Junior Suite overlooked the Main Street and was absolutely quiet and spacious and one of the most stylish rooms I’ve had anywhere in a long time. Great bed, solid room amenities including a nice coffee maker, free snack and drink pantry down the hall and climate controls that worked great. Totally a perfect stay, friendly staff that kept engaging with us throughout. Highly recommended 100/100!"

"I had a great experience staying at the Daxton Hotel. The person who checked me in was extremely helpful when my reservation did not initially appear in the system, and he honored the same rate without any issues. The valet staff, especially Ethan and Lane, went above and beyond to make my stay enjoyable. Since this was my first time renting an electric vehicle, they took the time to help me understand how everything worked, charged the vehicle for me, and even provided helpful directions and travel advice for my trip to Ohio. Their professionalism, kindness, and willingness to help truly made a difference in my stay."
