PB hotel design editorial

A $60 million commission in downtown Birmingham, Michigan might have produced something safely civic and forgettable. Instead, Chicago firm Booth Hansen delivered a limestone-and-glass facade with the composed authority of a European grand hotel transplanted to the Midwest's most quietly prosperous Main Street address. The Daxton Hotel opened in 2021 with 151 rooms and an ambition that extended well beyond its corner plot at 298 S. Old Woodward Ave — including fifth-floor private terraces and a second-level green roof courtyard that soften what might otherwise feel like a formal urban statement. Inside, KTGY Simeone Deary Design Group navigated the tension between glamour and livability with considerable skill. Guest rooms pair dark leather platform beds and ebonized millwork with ornate plaster crown molding and oversized botanical wallcoverings set behind arched niches — a collision of gothic romance and contemporary restraint that somehow holds together. The bar is the property's most theatrical gesture: a veined black marble island at its center, surrounded by a geodesic steel-and-brass ceiling structure that pulls daylight through the space like a lantern. Throughout, a 400-plus piece art collection curated by Saatchi Art anchors the interiors in something more considered than mere decoration — large mixed-media portraits in the restaurant and graffiti-inflected sculpture in the bar give the whole property a cultural seriousness that earned it a MICHELIN Key designation before Hilton's Curio Collection came calling in 2024.

"Wow! What an absolute delight of a hotel right in the middle of downtown Birmingham. What a fun, artsy, quirky upscale hotel full of unique touches. The lobby is packed with energy and art and was buzzing when we checked in. We were warmly welcomed with sparkling wine, nice touch! Our Junior Suite overlooked the Main Street and was absolutely quiet and spacious and one of the most stylish rooms I’ve had anywhere in a long time. Great bed, solid room amenities including a nice coffee maker, free snack and drink pantry down the hall and climate controls that worked great. Totally a perfect stay, friendly staff that kept engaging with us throughout. Highly recommended 100/100!"

"I had a great experience staying at the Daxton Hotel. The person who checked me in was extremely helpful when my reservation did not initially appear in the system, and he honored the same rate without any issues. The valet staff, especially Ethan and Lane, went above and beyond to make my stay enjoyable. Since this was my first time renting an electric vehicle, they took the time to help me understand how everything worked, charged the vehicle for me, and even provided helpful directions and travel advice for my trip to Ohio. Their professionalism, kindness, and willingness to help truly made a difference in my stay."

"Eli was incredibly helpful and kind! He went above and beyond by fixing my broken belt buckle, which I truly appreciated. His attitude was polite, professional, and genuinely caring. Great service!"

"The Daxton is a beautiful, modern hotel in a prime area of Birmingham. The staff were friendly and responsive. To get to the level of service on par with the Ritz, Four Seasons, etc, the following issues need to be addressed: 1. When a guest lists 4 ppl on their reservation, ensure there are 4 sets of bath towels. If there are children, ask what time you would like the sofa bed made at check-in so guests don't have to call to request it. 2. Toilet paper and tissue box refills should be checked every cleaning and replenished as noted. 3. Room keys are constantly deactivated. This is frustrating and caused us to make multiple trips to the front desk. 4. A microwave should be placed in the pantry of every floor to make it convenient vs calling to have one brought to the room. They should also be cleaned between guests, as the microwave we received was disgusting. 5. Lastly, the pantry on each floor should offer plastic cutlery in addition to cups, as they provide yogurt/granola, tea, etc but not spoons were available. Overall, we had a wonderful stay, loved the breakfast and would stay here again in the future."
