PB hotel design editorial

A late-nineteenth-century timber-and-brick warehouse in Minneapolis's North Loop, built in 1897 as a farm equipment and sporting goods facility, provided the structural bones for Hewing Hotel when it opened in 2016 — and the conversion wisely treated that industrial inheritance as the design's primary material rather than something to be softened or disguised. Shea Design handled the interiors, working with the building's original Douglas fir ceiling planks, exposed yellow-brick walls, and heavy timber columns to establish a register that sits closer to a well-curated hunting lodge than a conventional boutique hotel. The 119 rooms carry that language into the guest quarters, where herringbone-patterned carpets, walnut-framed beds with upholstered headboards, brass pivot sconces, and patterned wallpaper depicting folkloric wildlife motifs create a palette that manages warmth without tipping into kitsch. Plaid wool bed runners and quilted wall panels reinforce the northwoods sensibility without reducing it to costume. The ground-floor restaurant, Tullibee, makes the building's industrial scale an asset rather than a liability — exposed ductwork runs overhead, reclaimed timber floors anchor the room, and tufted caramel leather banquettes face the open kitchen across steel-framed shelving crowded with preserving jars. On the roof, a heated pool deck frames a view straight into downtown Minneapolis's skyline, the old ghost signage of neighboring warehouses still legible on the brick walls below. It is the kind of detail that no decorator could manufacture — and Hewing, to its credit, understood that from the beginning.

"Overall, the hotel was nice. Lobby and common spaces are well designed and not overly hip or trying too hard. Door/valet staff were indifferent, not particularly welcoming. Front desk employees were friendly and helpful. I would say some aspects of the hotel are a little rundown although their website indicates a "refresh". Not sure what stage of that they're in. The carpet in our King City view room was badly frayed in places. The sauna and locker rooms were nice but the rooftop hottub was kind of janky -- bar mats laid down next to extension cords running to electrical box hanging out next to the pool, no obvious signage as to where to turn the hottub on, and an outdoor bucket shower with hose hanging down not connected to anything so therefore not working (possibly the don't have it hooked up in winter but maybe put a sign up?) It just didn't feel quite like a $300+/night set up. It was a fun place to hang in the north loop for a night but not sure I would say it was a must try!"

"Booked a Suite for my wife, son and I. Website said the suite contained a sofa bed. No sofa bed or even bedding to use on the couch were included in the room. Outdoor pool had cold water, could not stay in it. Sauna was great, but no towels to use to sit on or use to dry off. Called for more towels, was told "we will bring some right up", none ever came after waiting 45 minutes. Overall, poor value for what was promised on the Hewing website. Disappointing experience that I will not repeat."

"This is one of the best hotels I've stayed at in the world. It's cozy, clean, quiet, and gorgeous - exposed brick walls in the spacious rooms, and everything is well designed including the furniture, room layout, lobbies, restaurants, rooftop bar, and other common areas. Staff are friendly, helpful, and the food in the restaurants is terrific. Highly recommend this hotel. Perfect location in an interesting neighbourhood, close to UMinnesota too."
