PB hotel design editorial

Wilbur Foshay modeled his 1929 Minneapolis tower on the Washington Monument — a 32-story obelisk in Indiana limestone that stood as the tallest building between Chicago and the Pacific Coast for nearly four decades. The ambition was operatic and the timing catastrophic: the building opened mere weeks before the stock market collapse that would bankrupt Foshay himself, leaving the tower as a monument to Gilded Age hubris. W Minneapolis — The Foshay has inhabited this Art Deco landmark since 2008, and the lobby makes the history impossible to ignore — original terrazzo floors inlaid with geometric diamond patterns, coffered ceilings finished in gold leaf, and tiered crystal chandeliers that the restoration team preserved rather than replaced, the whole corridor now washed in the brand's signature magenta wash that creates an odd and rather thrilling friction with 1920s classicism. The 229 guestrooms spread across the tower's tapering upper floors, where the interiors strike a different register from the preserved lobby grandeur. Geometric wallcoverings in amber and cobalt echo the building's Art Deco lineage in a more contemporary key, deep navy carpets printed with gold chevron and diamond motifs running underfoot, walnut-finished case goods paired with brass-toned lamps and tufted leather headboards. The W Living Room bar, by contrast, goes full atmosphere: black tufted wingbacks arranged around a linear gas fireplace, large-format red abstract canvases, and oxidized metal side tables pitched somewhere between downtown nightlife and a Prohibition-era private club.

"If you are any of the following: a global traveler within Corporate America the last 20 plus years who has stayed in many, many hotels, volleyball mom or dad, still goes out to have a drink and listen to music, likes great food (I’m from Chicago so my palate has seen the best-LOL ), and a 4 out of 5 hotel snob, then this review is for YOU. We were there for a volleyball tournament a couple of weeks ago and everything was super - the rooms are big and modern, great downtown location, Manny’s Steakhouse in the lobby, drinks were fantastic, and Fri/Sat night a DJ in the Living Room lobby. Staff was great, check in check out smooth, and honestly one of the more pleasant weekends I’ve had traveling in a long time considering we were at the Convention Center for volleyball all weekend. If you are traveling to Minneapolis and you fit one of the above descriptions then this hotel is for you. Trust me."

"I sent the below email to the Director of Operations, Saturday night (14 Feb). On Sunday AM when I checked out, I asked for the Manager working to connect with me, either via phone call or email. Neither have responded. "Hello Mr. Allen Today was such a big fail tonight at this hotel. As we checked in, we observed our room was unreasonably hot. We turned down the thermostat and even turned off the climate control. For hours. It was still unreasonably hot Our room will not get below 77F. We had engineering visit the room and they recommended to turn off the heat. Which is what we had tried. Front desk said the heat is on in the winter, which is lame considering we've been here before on the winter. Worst room ever here. It was still hot after the engineer told us to turn off the climate control. We asked for a fan to be brought up. It took over 45 minutes. Now we have a noisy fan to cool us down in an unreasonably hot room. After 3 more hours it's still 77F according to the room thermostat. I asked twice for a new room. I was told you were sold out and the front desk wanted to keep us in the room. Horrible service. Epic fail. I will be sharing my feedback with the front desk tomorrow AM and sharing my feedback with the manager available then. Your team could have done better today and three times your staff failed. We've been here probably 10 times. I'm a huge Marriott fan as a lifetime platinum. Today, your hotel failed. If this is the best you could do, seriously, worst experience here at the W, ever.""

"Beautiful, historic building. The lobby is on the smaller side with a bar and restaurant taking up most of the first floor space but it is lovely. We were treated promptly and found out that we had been upgraded to a larger suite - we had booked the Fantastic Suite and got to stay on the 24th floor in the Magnificent Suite. It is very large. Sadly, the couch wasn't very comfortable, but it looks amazing. The view is incredible. The bathroom was large and luxurious. The robes were a little stiff rather than soft. The black-out blinds were wonderful for sleeping in. We could hear some sirens but didn't hear any other noise. The mattress was very comfortable. We didn't want to pay $60 for valet parking so we used the garage. Sadly, the interior connection is closed, so you do have to walk outside for about 20 feet if you do that. It saved about $40 so we thought it was worth it. We enjoyed going up to the observatory, which actually has an open balcony. The speakeasy was really busy so we didn't stay but looked fun."

"A hotel that had struggled for a while is back at it's full form. Crisp, excellent, W experience, and no small part of that is Tomas and Rubi. Service was great and timely, Fantastic (now Urban?) suite was really an awesome room, and the breakfast service for elite members was quite pampered being delivered to my room."

"I rarely write negative reviews, but my experience at this property was unacceptable. During my recent stay, I discovered bed bugs in my room late at night. As a frequent traveler and Platinum Elite member, I've stayed at many Marriott hotels, and this was the first time I encountered such a serious issue. I immediately notified the front desk. The clerk offered to move me to another room at 1:00 AM or suggested I find a new hotel. They were professional and assured me I would hear from management in the morning. The next morning, I requested to speak with a manager, but none were available at 8:00 AM. I also informed the front desk clerk that I expected a full refund. Instead, I received an email from the Senior Operations Room Manager, who initially offered me 20,000 bonus points for the inconvenience without refunding my one-night stay. When I replied that I expected a full refund, the Senior Operations Room Manager then said she would issue a refund for the one-night stay instead of providing the points, which I found to be petty. She acknowledged that she was not aware I had discussed compensation with her team, which should be standard policy. This experience indicates that the property lacks proper training in handling such situations. Additionally, I expected a call from a more senior member of the management team. Unfortunately, this experience has seriously damaged my confidence in this hotel and its management. **Recommendation:** Until management demonstrates that they take guest safety and cleanliness seriously, I strongly suggest staying elsewhere—especially for loyal members who expect a higher level of customer service."
