PB hotel design editorial

Clayton, Missouri's most quietly affluent suburb, has long maintained a particular civic posture — professional, prosperous, and resistant to spectacle. The Ritz-Carlton, St. Louis fits that disposition precisely. Rising seventeen stories above Forsyth Boulevard in a red brick tower whose cornice detailing and limestone banding gesture toward the postmodern classicism fashionable when it opened in 1990, the 301-room hotel holds its ground against the surrounding streetscape of law firms and financial headquarters without straining for attention. A small-scale brick pavilion at street level softens the base, and the plaza fountain visible from the exterior gives the approach a civic formality that suits the neighborhood's self-image. Inside, the interiors move between two distinct registers. Guest rooms and suites favor a restrained American neoclassicism — gray cashmere walls, ebonized four-poster beds with brass detailing, velvet armchairs in biscuit tones, silver-legged ottomans — the whole palette calibrated to feel like serious money rather than resort fantasy. The bar spaces tell a different story: one leans into a dark, coffered-ceiling club atmosphere, walls lined with what appear to be brass-fitted wine lockers, leather banquettes in cognac and chocolate anchoring the seating. The other takes a more theatrical turn, with barrel-vaulted plasterwork, a shimmering gold-tile back bar wall, and loose arrangements of powder-blue lounge chairs — a contrast that gives the property more internal range than its composed exterior might suggest.

The Ritz-Carlton, St. Louis Reviews

"I just had my wedding here and from the very start it was a complete and utter nightmare. The staff handling weddings and events are overwhelmed and seem like they have little to no experience in hospitality or organization. The complaints I have are endless and range from giving crab meat to a guest with a noted shellfish allergy; charging me a surprise $4300 the week of the wedding “by accident”; telling me at 11:30pm the night before my arrival that my room would no longer be available for early check in. We had to sit in a random parking lot in St. Louis until we could go in; some of my guests were charged $700 per night when our wedding discount was $299 per room. When asked about this they told us we missed the cutoff date for the discount… there are emails dating back to March trying to discuss the cutoff date and the issues my guests were having with the booking link— we NEVER received any communication from the room coordinator. Not once; our menu and day of plans were not finalized until 2 ish weeks before the wedding day; guests were charged multiple times for parking instead the initial flat fee they pre-paid; the list goes on. If you are considering getting married here— DONT. I cannot express how terribly this was all handled. Communication on my end was frequent and thorough and I waited WEEKS between responses from the ritz. I wish more than anything I would have chosen a different venue. In fact I asked to get out of my contract so that I could go elsewhere but unfortunately I had to hold up to my end of the contract though the ritz did not. I left my reception early and in tears at how everything was handled. If I could scream this from the rooftops I would. They ruined the most expensive and important day of our lives, and they will ruin yours too. Do NOT choose them. Corporate— investigate this staff and hire a new one."

"Service was excellent at this five-star property. Laura at the front desk was especially helpful my first night, and even wrote me a handwritten offering even more help than she already provided. Never had that experience before! All that said, the carpeting in the rooms and halls are a little dated and could used refurbishing. But the shower was so nice I didn’t even want to get out each morning! Everything else about this hotel was lovely."

"Safe & Convenient Location I chose the Ritz-Carlton because Clayton is easily the safest and most reliable area to stay in when visiting St. Louis. Given the reputations of some surrounding neighborhoods, this location provided great peace of mind throughout my trip. Exceptional Service & Dining The staff was consistently friendly and helpful. A special shout-out to Paul at Casa Don Alfonso, who was incredibly accommodating and made my dining experience truly enjoyable. Don’t skip the pastry selection—it is magnificent! I even brought a few truffles home to extend the experience. Fitness Center Feedback The gym is impressively large for a hotel, featuring eight treadmills and a solid variety of weight machines and dumbbell racks. However, the dumbbells themselves are showing their age. For a property of this caliber, an upgrade to the free weights would really bring the fitness center up to the "Ritz" standard."

"I was excited to enjoy a pampered evening of peaceful sleep. But the reviews led me astray. This is an exceptionally old and dumpy property. The lobby is well appointed and impressive. The staff are professional and friendly. But the actual floors, hallways, and rooms look like any other middling Marriott. The air quality in the room is terrible. Fingers crossed for a decent coffee tomorrow."
