PB hotel design editorial

At nearly 8,000 feet in the Montana Rockies, where Moonlight Basin's forested flanks drop toward the Spanish Peaks, the brief for One&Only Moonlight Basin was essentially this: build something that feels inseparable from the landscape rather than imposed upon it. The architecture responds through a low-slung, heavily timbered massing clad in weathered wood and rough-cut stone, the building stepping along the ridgeline in a rhythm that mirrors the surrounding spruce and fir. From the exterior, dark structural columns and deep-set balconies push the building into shadow, so that the forest reads as the dominant visual force and the hotel as a considered extension of it. Inside, that restraint gives way to a more layered warmth. Guest rooms pair blackened steel window frames with light oak plank ceilings and wide-plank floors, the corner glazing in the suites framing snow-dusted peak views that render the mountain the room's central object. A separate register appears in the darker, heavier suites — leather-upholstered headboards, integrated fireplaces set into dark-tiled surrounds, sculptural lounge chairs in moody tobacco tones. The bar and lounge, clad in rough ashlar stone with a hammered-metal bar front and amber suede club chairs, has the atmosphere of a serious après-ski room rather than a hotel amenity. The indoor pool hall, sheathed in vertical timber slats with floor-to-ceiling glazing onto a snow-laden treeline, is among the most architecturally resolved spa spaces the brand has delivered anywhere.

"My husband and I are big fans of One & Only properties, having visited multiple of their others. We have been waiting for the moonlight basin location to open for a couple years, so naturally we booked it shortly after they opened. O&O properties have an amazing way of making the resort itself the destination - making the resort the lens in which you experience your location. This property is no exception, but an even more fun experience due to all different types of activities they have outdoors year round. The highlights: - The whole ski experience. We had an amazing experience with the rentals, the gondola, and The Landing property itself. It is such a unique and luxurious ski experience feeling that is truly one of a kind and so different than visiting a normal mountain. - Akira Back. One of the most amazing meals - it was absolutely delicious, service was great as well. - The Moonshack. My husband and I both agreed we could truly sit in this property all day! The bartenders are top notch, and the entire atmosphere is unique and feels authentic to Montana’s roots. Area of improvement: - Nitpicky, but we feel compared to their other properties that the breakfast here falls short. While the buffet is beautiful, the menu itself is trying a little too hard. No real classic hearty breakfast options of that which you’d expect in the mountains. While the uniqueness can be a nice touch to some of the options, we feel there needs to be more variety of the classics done even better by O&O chefs, as they have at their other properties. All in all, I couldn’t recommend staying here enough. The staff and service are wonderful, and the location felt so unique. We can’t wait to come back during summer as we feel it’ll be a completely different type of trip than winter."

"My wife and I stayed here for our fifth year anniversary for three nights. Unfortunately, we had a very frustrating stay. This place charges a premium price but up charges frequently and overall was very chaotic and we still trying to get an answer from them 2 weeks after our stay. They have a beautiful spa that can only be accessed if you have an appointment, but day passes are available upon request. The employees are not all aware of this policy and it leads to confusion and inconsistency among the staff. An employee at the spa was very rude and irritated when we tried to use the daypass, it was uncomfortable and unnecessary- the spa was completely empty when we went. This resort is not ski in/ski out (which we knew), we rented our skis from the hotel and had to return to the ski shop because they fit the wrong skis to the wrong boots between my wife and I. After we returned to the mountain with correctly fitted skis, we found that my pole was broken. This was a waste of time and made us question the maintenance, inspection and overall safety of the equipment. They are not forthcoming about the things to do on the property, but are very quick to find ways to upcharge you. They are also very nebulous on billing, we were given our final bill on the night before our departure to avoid confusion the following day. The following morning over $1300 was charged to our account and no one could tell us why. While they did try to make it right by giving us complimentary services, there was a lot of confusion and communication issues. To this day, I am trying to reach someone at the hotel and have tried at least 6 times to get someone on the phone to give me a consistent answer. I keep being told they will call me in the evening, then the next morning. It is very frustrating and makes me regret my stay. Overall, our favorite part of the stay was the moonshack. It was a wonderful place and we enjoyed our time there. There were certain employees that truly tried to go above and beyond (Whitney/Vincent) and it was appreciated. But overall, the stay was not worth the overall frustration. At this price point, you shouldn't have to worry about conflicting/hidden fees, disorganization, broken ski equipment and rude employees. This was very disappointing."

"Our 5 days at One&Only Moonlight Basin was one of our favorite trips to date. The serene environment, impeccable design, and attention to detail throughout the property doesn’t go unnoticed. We felt like we had a private lodging in a way, as it felt like home away from home but surrounded by mountains, snow, and friendly support for anything you’d need. Highly recommend staying here if skiing! We enjoyed their private ski rental and private gondola to access Lone Mountain (the ultimate luxury experience)! All of the restaurants were delicious with beautiful ambiance- they also had an amazing spa with unexpected oxygen hookups post massage, and the most beautiful onsen and indoor pool. The Moonshack and Dear Josephine were our favorite places to enjoy a handcrafted beverage and immerse ourselves in nature. A few things I attempted to order were not stocked or ran out( a few things at Wildwood and -The Landing) but I’m sure over time this will be addressed. There is also an observatory nearby where you can reserve a private viewing. I found this out through social media, was able to book a reservation through my resort host, but it ended up being canceled due to weather. The only thing we truly hope irons out in the future is their provided shuttles around the property (lodge to dinner to Moonshack etc) as that’s not entirely reliable - as well as transportation to town (20 min away) expect to pay over $300 round trip. Certainly a surprise there are no other options once you arrive. Will be getting a rental car next stay, as truly we are looking forward to a summer visit to experience a different set of memories. Gorgeous stay, gorgeous place, and the energy here truly felt revitalizing, restoring, and romantic. Send our thanks to some of the incredible individuals working with a sense of pride and integrity to make our visit extra special!"

"The resort in the landscape itself is absolutely stunning, but a bit inconvenient about having to take a car anywhere you want to go whether it’s to the lobby to the spa or to a restaurant on property or to a bar on property. Since it is new, they are definitely working out the kinks and often ran out of bottled water at every meal."
