PB hotel design editorial

Jet Zarkadas of Santa Fe's Los Griegos Studio took Mary Colter as a guiding spirit when designing the interiors of The Ranch at Rock Creek — a decision that gave the 6,600-acre Montana property something most luxury guest ranches conspicuously lack: a credible past. Colter, the architect who shaped the visual identity of the American Southwest through her work for the Fred Harvey Company in the early twentieth century, believed in building with history rather than around it. Zarkadas applied the same instinct here, working from period Montana photographs and salvaged oak and stone to furnish a 19th-century homestead that opened in 2010 with 31 accommodations spread across a Granite Lodge, historic barn rooms, hand-hewn log cabins, and canvas glamping structures. The results are visible in every room: cowhide rugs laid over dark hardwood floors, twig-frame beds dressed in serape-stripe blankets, Navajo-pattern textiles hung as wall art, leather upholstery worn to an honest patina. The bar counter is fronted by actual saddles on polished steel pedestals, longhorn mounts crowning the back bar above carved timber millwork. Outside, a stone-coped pool sits at the edge of working ranchland with pine-covered hills rising behind it, the surrounding paving drawn from the same fieldstone palette as the cabins. Nothing here is performing the West from a distance — the whole property has the atmosphere of a place that has simply been in continuous use for a very long time.

"Absolutely amazing. Truly nothing you could ask for that they don’t accommodate. Real customer service is about anticipating what guests will want before they even ask, and this team goes above and beyond at every level. I stayed in the Bluebird Cabin, which was exceptional. I was told it used to be the spa, and it shows. It even has a private sauna inside, which made the whole experience feel incredibly special and restorative. Being surrounded by fresh, crisp Montana air and nature was the perfect reset. The activities on site are outstanding and so well run. Every experience felt thoughtful, seamless, and genuinely fun. It’s the kind of place where you have the best bonding time with whoever you travel with. We did skiing, snowmobiling, shooting, skiing and horseback riding. If I had to choose just one must-do activity, it would absolutely be snowmobiling. Hands down, the highlight and something I’ll never forget. The staff truly make this place what it is. Special thanks to Wayne, Hunter, Emma, Liz, Gracie, and Brianna — each of them went above and beyond and made us feel so well looked after. This was one of the best trips I’ve ever taken and an experience I’ll be recommending to all my friends and family. A truly unforgettable stay and wish we stayed even longer!"

"The Ranch at Rock Creek is the perfect combination of luxury and authenticity. The location is set in the majestic rolling hills of Montana where you can envision several different centuries of a land unblemished by the modern world. You can take in the rugged beauty of nature with premier service at your fingertips. There is a wide array of activities that will satisfy your adventurous side and allow you to retreat to the beauty of rooms and cabins appointed with every classic detail of western living while sustaining the authenticity of a classic ranch. The cleanliness of the rooms are at the highest level of any world class luxury hotel. The staff meet the highest standards of service while offering a warmth and friendliness that will make you want to visit again and again. The food was outstanding with lots of variety for every palate. Activities ranged from onsite fly fishing, horseback riding, snowmobiling to excellent skiing within minutes of the ranch. There were not enough hours in the day to do everything available. Walking at night under the stars was a transformative event of peace and reflection. I highly recommend at least a week long visit to the Ranch at Rock Creek."

"I came for my second time- initially last year just my wife and I, then year we brought 3 of my wife's family members, so 5 of us. I stayed in the Bluebird last year, this year in the Ponderosa, a large, 3 bedroom home, 4 baths, 2 fireplaces. We left feeling possibly the Bluebird is nicer for 2 people, but all told- their accommodations are top tier. There's so many ways to break down the positives: the Ponderosa had amazing bedding, beautiful bathrooms, fireplace where they bring unlimited wood. The room leaning is done by several people- they do it quickly and completely. They replenish everything, every single time- twice per day (turndown). Activities: I had some trouble here: I didn't do a good job pre- trip as far as filling in the schedule, and before we left, my wife and I knew we didn't like our tentative schedule. We should have called back and just said "wait: we want a do -over", but we didn't. Had to spend some time changing everything around- and to be honest, we met resistance there- "sorry sir, this is booked.." " sorry, can't accommodate you".. but I'd say in the end, it all worked out. Skiing this year was included- last year it was extra, that was amazing. Food is top notch: 3 amazing, 5 star meals per day, I could go on and on, but I'd run out of adjectives. Our favorite is lunch, then breakfast, dinner possibly least favorite. The best part by far is the people- both other guests, and guides who work there. Conversations held before dinner with guests is like nowhere I've ever been. You make friends for life there- that happens only here. The location is gorgeous, utopian almost. A few people who really stood out as A+, amazing employees/guides: Candace at the front desk/orientation: widely loved, great personality, a joy Ace: bartender- what a great guy, very talented Eleanor and Lucy- two servers who stood out to us Amy from activities from Connecticut: our second year having on amazing experience with her; truly fun, adventurous, bursting with personality and we get happy just knowing she'll be with us for an activity- makes everything 10x better Loren: beautiful person inside and out- always a professional, reserved but once you know her, an absolute joy to be around; we'd request her whenever we could; deserves a promotion Karson: he spend half a day just with me, took me skiing, helped me out there, brought me back- I was thoroughly impressed with his personality, professionalism, warmth Negatives: couple tiny ones- if you don't get a good schedule on your pre-trip meeting, it's tough to re-do it while you're there. I had several sort of negative conversations where everything I wan't to do was a "no", everything booked, I was shut out of this and that; you need to nail it on that pre-trip interview, otherwise backtracking is tough- I learned that -I felt they were out of a lot of things, or downgraded from last year: out of basically all berries, bananas and fruit all week; stopped giving out slippers; dinner early and late was added? was not a positive, too much to get into here; no New Year's Eve spread of appetizers; also every time (5 nights) I saw down for pre-dinner drinks and the "snack".. they were completely out of the snack- every single time Overall it's 5 stars- we'll be back; build great relationships, did activities, dined and loved our stay."

"My stay at The Ranch at Rock Creek was nothing short of incredible. Every detail, big or small, was thoughtfully executed, and the level of personalization made the experience feel completely tailored to me. The staff anticipated needs I didn’t even know I had, and every touch throughout the stay reinforced how dedicated they are to creating unforgettable moments. No detail went unnoticed, and it made for a truly one-of-a-kind getaway."
