PB hotel design editorial

At the base of Northstar California's ski runs in the Sierra Nevada, where the mountain flattens into a village plaza dusted with sierra snowpack for roughly half the year, a cluster of steep-pitched rooflines and fieldstone base courses signal the ambitions the Ritz-Carlton Lake Tahoe has set for itself since opening in 2009. The architecture, conceived in the tradition of the great American mountain lodge, arranges its six stories of cedar-toned cladding and dormered gables around an interior that attempts something genuinely difficult: the warmth of a private mountain compound at a scale that accommodates 170 rooms and suites. The massing succeeds — broken into pavilion-like volumes that read as a collection of connected structures rather than a single resort block, the building avoids the institutional weight that plagues so many ski-in, ski-out properties. Inside, the design palette leans into the Sierra vernacular without tipping into rustic pastiche. Guest rooms are dressed in natural linen, textured wool carpeting, and warm taupe upholstery, with knotty alder-framed windows framing either pine canopy or snow-covered couloirs depending on orientation. The restaurant, anchored by a long linear fireplace set into slabs of dark Sierra granite and heavy exposed timber beams overhead, earns its atmosphere — backlit sculptural branch installations and bronze-toned leather seating adding a considered layer of craft above the expected lodge conventions. The outdoor pool terrace, heated year-round against the mountain backdrop, completes a property that functions credibly across all four seasons.

"Avoid this location. Check in at 5 pm and waited 20 mins in lobby for key. Coffee gone by 8 am and no tea. Staff very young and totally inexperienced. Hotel is disorganized and couldn’t even get gift bags right. Pretty location but wildly expensive. $65 for hamburger. I love the Ritz usually but this one was a total miss."

"Wow we loved it!! This is a beautiful property with amazing service!! The rooms were large and decorated beautifully. The service was exceptional- everyone went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable. The head of concierge treated us so well and sat us down and asked what we were looking to do. She then went on to make sure we were well taken care of for our trip. She even went above and got us some special Indian treats to take home with us. We did have access to the concierge level which was nice - the food selection was not great but the drinks made up for it. Highly recommend this resort !! You will not be disappointed"

"Pretty Bad! Hotel is old, beds not comfortable, no amenities, service is literally nonexistent, and the food is not good. I really can’t say anything nice about this place. And it’s super overpriced. We’re ambassadors we didn’t get upgraded and it seems like the place is empty. I can handle an older Ritz but service terrible."

"We had an exceptional stay at The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe, thanks to Joanna. From arrival to departure, she handled every detail with professionalism and genuine care. Joanna warmly welcomed us with champagne and Ritz-Carlton outing shirts for my husband and me. She also prepared a s’mores kit for a cozy evening by the fire and arranged a relaxing bubble bath setup for me to unwind. Her handwritten card, thoughtful recommendations, and attention to detail made our stay truly memorable. Joanna’s kindness and dedication elevated our experience, and she is a tremendous asset to the Ritz-Carlton brand. Thank you, Joanna, for making our visit so special."

"We often just drive around the lake on a day off and pick a random spot to stop in for a drink. This time we chose the Ritz, as we’ve been thinking about doing a staycation there. We went upstairs to Manzanita and initially sat at the bar. There’s no question this is a 5-star hotel. The service was fantastic, drinks very tasty and everyone was friendly. We decided to move a few feet to the Living Room Lodge where the upscale service didn’t stop. The fire was burning, making the atmosphere cozy and perfect. We’re not big skiers and often prefer to be on the water when staying at the lake, but we are keeping this in mind every time we consider our next trip."
