PB hotel design editorial

Carved from the upper floors of a dark glass tower at the heart of CityCenter — MGM Resorts' $8.5 billion mixed-use development that reshaped the mid-Strip when it opened in 2009 — the Waldorf Astoria Las Vegas was designed by Helmut Jahn, whose characteristic curtain-wall geometry gives the building its brooding, faceted presence against the Nevada sky. Unlike every other major hotel on the Strip, there is no casino on the premises, a deliberate absence that set the property apart from the moment it opened as the Mandarin Oriental before rebranding under the Waldorf flag in 2018. The 392 rooms and suites, designed by HBA (Hirsch Bedner Associates), pursue a restrained glamour that suits the non-gaming positioning — headboards clad in sculptural metallic tile panels, lucite benches at the foot of beds, curved fringed sofas positioned to frame Strip views through floor-to-ceiling glass. The palette runs to warm taupe and dove grey, punctuated by macassar ebony millwork and polished chrome. On the 23rd floor, the Sky Lobby bar commands a panoramic sweep of the Strip, its interior finished in dark-stained timber and red leather seating under a ceiling articulated with recessed linear lighting — a composition that carries more of a private members' club atmosphere than the extroverted energy typical of Las Vegas. The pool deck, set at podium level with Aria and the Cosmopolitan visible beyond the palms, offers the rare sensation of being both within and removed from the spectacle below.

"I have had two meals at The Waldorf in Vegas, once in December 25 and ones in April 26. The service of my meals, once some sushi, and once a great Hamburger in Zen Kitchen was wonderful but this is a high end property. I will be staying at the Waldorf for 6 days in August. Here are some photos"

"The Waldorf Astoria was an absolutely perfect getaway in Las Vegas. The location, just steps behind the Las Vegas Strip, is a perfect blend of Vegas action and the quiet elegance that only a Waldorf can offer. We had a spacious standard room with a huge bathroom featuring a separate soaking tub and shower. The room also had a changing closet separate from the bedroom. Housekeeping was spot-on and did an afternoon/evening turn-down and refresh, which was wonderful. The valet, Josh, was extremely helpful and kind, offering advice and transportation. In addition, Patrick, the concierge, went above and beyond with advice and airport transportation arrangements. We ate breakfast every day at the Zen Kitchen, and it was perfect. We also had cocktails one evening at Hard Shake (separate review). Make reservations if you want to enjoy Hard Shake and sit by the window for fantastic strip views."

"There is much to like here. Rooms are nicely proportioned, comfy, and immaculately clean. Speedy WiFi is helpful. I liked the sheltered nature of the main entrance and proximity to various stores and eateries. Window views are great. But the best feature is the accommodating staff. Without exception, every worker I encountered was genuinely friendly. There are only two flaws. One is the odd situation with the elevators - having to use two separate banks to get to your room. The second is the odor of food in the hallways (but not in the rooms). But the great location is the overriding factor."

"Waldorf Astoria Las Vegas is a colossal letdown. It’s incredibly old and hasn’t received any investment in its facilities. The place feels dirty, and there’s even hair on the linens. The decor is reminiscent of the 1980s. This property desperately needs renovation or a rebranding because it falls far short of the standards of a flagship luxury hotel."

"The best Vegas hotel we’ve ever been to. Have been coming to Vegas on and off for 20+ years and have always tried to find a non-gaming hotel. With Amex Platinum rewards, this place is terrific: Valet drive up means no long parking line, excellent lobby also with no long lines, room upgraded and very well appointed, noon check-in honored, quiet ambience with high-end fixtures and fittings, great pool area, food credit, breakfast credit, and steps to the trip. Attentive and professional service. Excellent."
