PB hotel design editorial

At the very edge of Dartmouth College's green in Hanover, New Hampshire, where the campus meets the small city's main street, sits one of the oldest continuously operating inns in the United States — the Hanover Inn Dartmouth, with roots traceable to 1780 and its current Georgian Revival brick building dating to 1924. Owned and operated by the college itself, the property carries a particular institutional weight that most hotels never have to navigate: it must serve visiting parents, faculty, alumni, and the occasional head of state while remaining legible as an extension of one of America's most architecturally coherent Ivy League campuses. The five-storey red-brick facade, with its white-painted cornice, dormered mansard roof, and columned porte-cochère, holds its own against the Federal and Colonial Revival buildings surrounding it. A substantial renovation completed around 2015 brought the interiors into a register that translates the Upper Valley landscape rather than historicizing it. The 108 guestrooms feature tall four-poster beds in warm-toned wood with deep hunter-green leather headboards, buffalo-check throw pillows, cable-knit blankets striped in Dartmouth green and white, and geometric-patterned carpets in taupe and cream. The food and beverage spaces do the more interesting design work: reclaimed barn-board cladding, weathered ceiling beams, dark-stained hardwood floors, and a long zinc-topped communal table anchor the tavern, while the main dining room pairs a linear gas fireplace set in slate with mustard and olive upholstered club chairs — New England materiality updated without nostalgia.

Hanover Inn Dartmouth Reviews

"Great location right on the edge of Dartmouth's campus and next to other shops and restaurants. The rooms are large but very cozy. The beds and pillows are very soft, so if you're someone who prefers a firm mattress or pillow it may be a little uncomfortable. It was very quiet and very clean. The staff is very helpful, and as a solo traveler I felt very safe."

"We’re stayed at Hanover Inn many times now, since our son began his studies at the college. It is a very well-run operation. It’s such a beautiful hotel. The lobby, with its fireplace, is so welcoming. We enjoyed some programming at the Inn that was seamless. Good breakfasts and lunches too."

"Location is AMAZING! Overall, the staff is friendly, but the VALET is RUDE. The rooms are very nice, but it was just very warm in the room, even with the a/c on."

"For first time visitors, the Hanover Inn was the perfect place to be. The proximity to campus and the downtown was the perfect walking trip, even in the cold of winter."

"Service and cleanliness have noticeably declined. During my four-night stay, housekeeping arrived very late (around 2–3 p.m.), yet my request for a noon late checkout was denied, citing early cleaning schedules. Body lotion was not replenished, the coffee station was dirty daily, and on two mornings the coffee was already empty by 9 a.m. The lobby restrooms were consistently messy, and once there were no paper towels. Room service was also disappointing: a soup arrived without a spoon, napkins, or salt and pepper, and it took a long time to correct after calling. Compared to a recent stay at 6th South Street Hotel, which had excellent guest service, it feels like this beautiful hotel is unfortunately going downhill"
