PB hotel design editorial

Few American university towns carry their architectural self-consciousness as thoroughly as Princeton, where even a new-build hotel is expected to earn its place on the streetscape. Graduate by Hilton Princeton does exactly that — its red brick facade, dark steel mullioned windows, and zinc-capped dormers on the upper story settle comfortably into the Georgian and Collegiate Gothic register that defines Nassau Street, without tipping into pastiche. Inside, Roman and Williams Guild — the New York studio behind some of the most theatrically assured hotel interiors of the past decade — has constructed an elaborate fantasy of the Ivy League gentleman-scholar. The lobby library rises two stories, its dark-painted millwork shelved floor to ceiling and labeled with the names of Princeton's eating clubs: Cap and Gown, Cottage, Tiger, Colonial. Chesterfield sofas in brown leather anchor the room alongside a geometric terracotta, black, and white tile floor that carries the same pattern through to the bar, where floral-damask wallpaper, a carved Moorish backbar, and globe pendant lights give the space the warmth of a private club circa 1910. Guest rooms maintain the conceit with deep blue grasscloth walls, custom headboards assembled from vintage golf club shafts, navy tartan bed runners, and globe chandeliers in aged brass — a palette that lands somewhere between a Scottish sporting lodge and a Princeton senior common room, which is precisely the point.

"Great character and wonderful staff in the heart of Princeton I’ve stayed at this hotel four times — three times on my own and once with my family and our two kids — and it has been a great experience every time. The hotel is beautiful and full of character, with a charming student theme that fits perfectly in historic Princeton. It really adds to the atmosphere. The location is also ideal, right in the center of downtown Princeton and within easy walking distance of everything. The restaurant is excellent and the food is delicious. But what truly stands out is the staff, who are consistently warm and welcoming. Special mentions to Sue in the restaurant and Andreja in valet parking. Andreja especially goes above and beyond to create a great guest experience, even when the technology doesn’t cooperate. We’ll definitely be back."

"I never heard of the brand but it was nice. The room was nice albeit a little tiny. The gym was good in a basement area with no windows. You could get water in the gym if I remember correctly but there were no cups. There are no ice machines to fill water bottles on any floors. You have to ask staff to do it and it’s not ideal during busy times. The staff was friendly. We did not try the food."

"I stayed here two nights in December 2025. This “hotel” is all “pomp and circumstance.” Its lobby and room furnishings are beautifully decorated but the service does not match the decor. The hospitality is non existent. This is basically a motel (instant coffee, paper and plastic cups, cans of water on your first night only) run by non educated staff in the hospitality business. No Ivy League degrees from Cornell’s School of Hotel Administration here. I reached out to the hotels manager via email about my interaction with a rude and offensive front desk clerk who I can only describe as confrontational and the nightmare of the valet service (which I had reserved and paid for in advance and was stuck in grid lock in the driveway for over 20 minutes, had to back out of basically a NYC underground parking garage onto a grid locked street b/c they kept letting cars in when the garage was full and no one could get in or out. I had to find another parking lot blocks away that wasn’t filled due to holiday shopping and walk my luggage the next morning there in frigid temperatures over slush and snow filled streets/sidewalks due to the snow overnight) I also filled out the survey they sent after my stay giving them 1 star in addition to a text I received on premises rating my stay, and I received absolutely NO calls or emails back. Bottom line: Don’t expect the decor to match the service. They don’t care how your stay is in the least."

"We will never stay at this hotel again. We stayed here last year and attributed some of the problems to the fact that the hotel was new. But, in a year nothing has improved. The lighting in the room is still insufficient, the "amenities" are non-existent, and there is practically no storage space for clothes in the rooms. In addition, this year, the heating did not work in our original room and we had to change rooms. The heating system is really a joke. It is motion activated and may not start for 15 minutes after you enter the room. In addition, the housekeeping staff is not very attentive. Today housekeeping did not leave enough bath towels or bath mats! Several of the staff members are lovely, but they can not make up for the basic structural problems with the hotel. With the ridiculous heating system, no closet space, and no drawers in the room, not to mention the inadequate lighting and claustrophobic rooms, this hotel is one that you should avoid."
