PB hotel design editorial

The land on which Bishop's Lodge sits was acquired in the 1850s by Jean-Baptiste Lamy, the French-born Archbishop of Santa Fe whose life inspired Willa Cather's Death Comes for the Archbishop — a detail that gives the property a literary and spiritual gravity most resort conversions can only approximate. Auberge Resorts Collection took over the historic compound in 2019 and undertook a renovation that positioned the lodge as a serious piece of the American Southwest's design conversation, set within the Tesuque Valley against the Sangre de Cristo foothills at the edge of the Santa Fe National Forest. The architecture draws from New Mexico's Pueblo Revival tradition — thick adobe-style walls in warm ochre, exposed vigas projecting from rooflines, portales shading the outdoor corridors in the manner of Spanish colonial missions. Interiors across the 111 rooms and public spaces work in layered earth tones: terracotta, sage, raw linen, and hammered leather, with woven textiles carrying the regional craft tradition forward without tipping into pastiche. Handcrafted pottery, mesquite wood furnishings, and burnished concrete floors establish a material register that feels continuous with the high-desert landscape immediately outside. The pool terrace, framed by low adobe walls and drought-tolerant plantings, extends the property's palette directly into the pinon-juniper terrain surrounding it — the boundary between interior and exterior kept deliberately porous throughout.

Bishop’s Lodge, Auberge Resorts Collection Reviews

"We enjoyed our stay but for the price and for it being a 5 star resort we were not blown away. The good: employees are kind, room was comfortable and clean, shuttle service to town worked perfectly and birdwatching and sound bathing were nice. The not so good: one pool and one hot tub which are fine but nothing special, as advertised it’s a family resort so expect kids in the hot tub and pool, golf carts are not separated from pedestrian walkways, food is average and grounds feel a little tired in places. The surprising: driving to the resort we saw many signs raising concerns about the resort polluting nearby local water sources. I asked about the signs when we arrived and was told there was a lawsuit and that the resort won. I learned later that the resort sued the town - not how a hotel typically positions itself as a good neighbor. It feels like a big company with deep pockets trying to silence residents and the town who have significantly less resources. Had we known all of this we would have chosen another hotel. Not for us."

"Bishop’s Lodge, Auberge Collection, is truly in a league of its own. After a grueling travel day with canceled flights, arriving late at night to such a warm, seamless greeting at the front desk was a complete lifesaver. Being whisked away in a golf cart to a beautiful room overlooking the property was the perfect introduction to the stay. To top it off, they had a delicious dinner and a bottle of champagne waiting in our room—a thoughtful gesture that set the tone for the rest of our trip. We stayed for five nights, and the breakfast every morning was worth every penny. It was never disappointing, and they offered something new each day to keep things interesting. The room itself was amazing—spacious, well-appointed, and the perfect home base. The amenities here really elevate the experience: Transportation: The shuttle service to downtown and the Railyard was a great touch, making it incredibly easy to explore without worrying about parking. The Mercedes Program: We took one of the complimentary Mercedes out to Bandelier National Monument, which was a blast to drive. The Picnic: The picnic lunch the staff prepared for our excursion was out of this world—easily one of the best meals of the trip. Activities: The trail hikes right on the property are beautiful and a great way to start the morning. The staff were consistently friendly and went above and beyond at every turn. I cannot recommend Bishop's Lodge highly enough for anyone looking for a luxury getaway that gets every single detail right. It was a perfect five-night stay!"

"This is a very high end property that does not have the quality or service required of such a property. The location is beautiful, yet it is in a canyon thus enclosed with limited views of the sunrises/sunsets. Gold carts currently running up and down the property detract from the ambiance. Room was not clean. Staff were not responsive to requests or needs. A much better choice at this price point is Five Graces if you wish to stay by the plaza, or Four Seasons if you wish to stay further out,"

"Beautiful property!! Beautiful rooms! The service needs to be improved. The people were wonderful and friendly but there’s just not enough of them working. You could wait 15 minutes for your car or 45 depending on how busy they are. Service in the restaurant can be slow and at one point I waited 30 min for a cup of coffee in the cafe. No matter how often I asked the room wasn’t cleaned till the late afternoon and I only got turn down service twice! Not the employees fault. They need more people! The food was ok, not great. Relaxing and a beautiful pool area. Wonderful cocktails!!"
