PB hotel design editorial

At the foot of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, where piñon and juniper scrub gives way to the high desert plateau north of Santa Fe, a cluster of stepped pueblo-revival casitas spreads across 57 acres of the Santa Fe National Forest. Four Seasons Resort Rancho Encantado, which opened in 2009 on the site of a historic guest ranch that Betty Egan ran for decades through the mid-twentieth century, was designed to feel less like a hotel arrival than a re-entry into the landscape itself. The architecture — earth-toned stucco massing, flat rooflines punctuated by rounded parapet forms, exposed timber vigas, and red-cedar pergolas — takes its cues directly from Pueblo and Spanish Colonial building traditions, the walls reading the same ochre and umber as the surrounding mesa. Inside the 65 casitas and suites, bleached pine vigas cross cream plaster ceilings above dark walnut floors, and kiva-style corner fireplaces anchor each room in a material warmth that goes well beyond regional decoration. The furnishings draw on a considered palette — terracotta upholstery, Navajo-influenced geometric rugs in red and charcoal, cowhide accent pillows — that places the property in the tradition of collected Southwestern interiors rather than manufactured resort theming. The restaurant's double-height volume, dressed in local stone and animated by clusters of glass-and-iron pendant lanterns, frames the Jemez Mountains at dusk with an unforced theatricality that feels entirely native to this part of New Mexico.

Four Seasons Resort Rancho Encantado Santa Fe Reviews

"The resort is a 15 minute drive outside Santa Fe – up in the mountains. The resort is beautiful, and the walk between our casita and the restaurant was quite pleasant. There are hiking trails on the property. This really felt like a retreat. The absolute highlight was the s’mores. When we arrived, our kiddo noted the roaring fire by the lobby and mentioned s’mores – and the front desk staffer asked if we wanted s’mores sent to our room. It turns out there are complimentary s’mores!!!! A “fire butler” came to our room and started a fire in our fireplace – and s’mores were delivered. It so cozy to fall asleep with a roaring fire. It felt totally luxurious. We took advantage of the fire butler and had s’mores on subsequent nights as well. For the most part, the staff was great – and anticipated our needs, but they were definitely short-staffed in the restaurant. At breakfast, there was a delay to be seated on most days – with much of the harried waitstaff avoiding eye-contact. Once seated, however, the waitstaff was very pleasant – but again, seemed harried. Took awhile to take our order – or to check in again once food was served. On a couple nights, we had dinner at the bar – and were pleasantly surprised to find that both the bar menu and the full dinner menu were available at the bar. The food was delicious, and the sunsets, viewed from the bar, are spectacular. The spa was lovely and peaceful, but it is spread out. To access the spa services, it was necessary to leave the locker room and go outside to a separate waiting area. After my spa service, I booked a private pool area. It was very relaxing – and in retrospect, I wish I had booked more time in the spa. The only (minor) issue was with our casita. The casita was lovely – with a sitting area outside and a fireplace in the room. When we arrived, however, the French doors that opened to our sitting area were not completely closed – and we could not get the door securely closed and locked. The fire butler could not figure out how to secure the door either. We felt a little uneasy sleeping on the 1st floor with an unlocked door, but the door was fixed the next day. The other issue – which may have been a quirk of our particular casita – was that there was no door to the bathroom. Outside the bathroom was a foyer with a closet, safe, fridge and kitchen appliances. The door that separated the bathroom area was beyond the foyer. So whenever someone was in bathroom, no one could access the closet or safe or fridge."

"The resort is beautifully located in the hills about 20 minutes outside of Santa Fe. We visit Santa Fe often and usually stay right downtown either at the Inn of the Anasazi or La Posada. Rancho Encantado offers a respite from the bustle of the city center. We thoroughly enjoyed the peace and serenity of the mountain setting plus all the extras that come with a top notch resort. Our casita was lovely—we enjoyed the view of the mountains from our balcony and firing up the in-room kiva fireplace. We had one of our best meals of the trip at Terra restaurant. Staff were friendly and most eager to please. We had a few hiccups with the shuttle service and housekeeping but the staff could not have done more to address the issues. We highly recommend Rancho Encantado and truly appreciate the incredibly attentive service they offer."

"We had a very enjoyable stay at the Four Seasons Santa Fe, spending several nights in a beautiful suite with both an indoor and outdoor fireplace—perfect for a cozy, restful experience. Room service was consistently very good, both the food and the cocktails, and the overall quality was high throughout our stay. One highlight was the fire concierge, which added a thoughtful and memorable touch to the evenings and really reinforced the sense of relaxation. While service at the bar was occasionally a bit slow, the staff was gracious and the drinks were excellent, so it didn’t detract significantly from the experience. One practical note: I strongly recommend reserving spa treatments well in advance. The spa was fully booked for most of our stay, and we weren’t able to get appointments without prior planning. Overall, a serene and luxurious retreat that we would happily return to."

"This hotel has serious security and service issues. The property itself was lovely looking. We stayed in a beautiful casita. But when we brought the issues to the attention of management, we were literally ignored. Promised call backs from management simply never came. I escalated with an email to corporate that was never answered. Unacceptable for any hotel to disregard safety and security issues that included male staff sneaking into women's bathrooms when women were alone in there. But I honestly expected more from The Four Seasons. Following the scary incident being ignored, we left and checked into the El Dorado downtown. It was a much better experience. Be careful at this, and perhaps any Four Seasons property. They do not care about the safety and security of their guests."
