PB hotel design editorial

Warren & Wetmore's Crown Building has always been one of Midtown's most theatrical pieces of architecture — a 1921 Beaux-Arts tower at Fifth Avenue and 57th Street whose gilded cornices and rusticated limestone facade carry the kind of civic ambition that Manhattan rarely attempts anymore. Aman New York, which arrived here in 2022, carved its 83 suites across floors seven through fourteen, letting Belgian architect Jean-Michel Gathy of Denniston navigate the productive friction between the building's neoclassical bones and Aman's characteristically meditative interior language. That tension resolves beautifully in the rooms, where deep-toned ebonized furniture, linen-panelled headboard walls, and freestanding fireplaces in darkened steel create an atmosphere closer to a Japanese ryokan than a conventional Manhattan hotel suite. Ink-wash murals drift across plaster in the manner of Song Dynasty scrolls, while wide-plank oak floors and sheer Roman blinds soften the city light pressing in from the original windows. The 14th-floor Garden Terrace — visible in the exterior image, set behind the original stone balustrade — brings the outside in with live plantings and tensile canopies suspended above the Beaux-Arts parapet. Deeper inside, the three-storey spa features a lap pool lined in teak and warm stone, flanked by oversized dome pendants in copper-backed white. It is a space that absorbs rather than performs — which, given Aman's brand of studied quietude dropped into one of the loudest corners of the city, seems precisely the point.

"The property itself is beautiful, and the room was very comfortable. The design, atmosphere, and overall setting are exceptional and reflect what draws guests to Aman in the first place. We chose Aman New York to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary, so the stay was especially meaningful to us. Unfortunately, the checkout experience fell well below the otherwise high standard of the property. There was billing confusion at departure, and at the same time an unexpected flooding issue in the lobby created a chaotic and uncomfortable situation for our family. What should have been a smooth and celebratory send-off became unnecessarily stressful. I followed up afterward with a detailed email and did not receive a response, which was disappointing given the brand’s reputation for attentiveness. Greater internal coordination and more responsive follow-up would help ensure the departure experience reflects the level of care Aman is known for."

"We have stayed at many Aman hotels in the world and we consider ourselves "Aman Junkies", we might travel to destinations just to stay at Aman. I think it is difficult to compare a city Aman with a resort Aman and expect the same level of service, said that even though it is the best hotel in NYC or one of the best without doubt, when writing a review cost is important as when you pay certain amount you are expecting service and facilities matching that. I think is a great experience if you have the perks such as FHR when you can spend a full weekend and enjoy the facilities with early check in and late check out, however for longer, there is no worry about cost, it is one of the best options. We got upgraded to a 57th street Suite and the room was really breathtaking, perfect size, beautifully decorated, nice views, amazing fireplace and loved everything. The room has complimentary alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks as well as snacks. The staff we encountered was attentive and cordial. We had breakfast which luckily was included in the rate, because we had a normal breakfast for two and the bill was close to 300, which it is just outrageous. The spa/pool maybe was the biggest disappointment. The gym is quite nice, however the pool is not as spectacular as in pictures as mirrors makes it look larger, there are no views and the space is extremely limited. There is only a few full lounges (2-3) and some chairs, however there is barely any room if multiple people are there to lounge, the staff on that area were mainly on their phones and we never had anybody come ask if we wanted anything. Maybe there is no food/drink service, however you would think that at an Aman hotel someone comes and asks if you want some water or need something. We went there 2-3 times during our stay and nobody asked us anything. There is a steam and hot sauna at the locker room area, but nothing compared to any other Aman we have visited. I am surprised that so little space has been used for the facilities, also there is no jacuzzi or hot tub, which is very strange for a property of such caliber. It was a great experience, however not the best value for the money. I would recommend if you can spend one night and enjoy the 2 days fully at the property, beautiful rooms, but just OK pool/spa and very limited views of the city."

"Aman New York redefines luxury hospitality in every possible way. The suites are exceptionally spacious, impeccably designed, and exude Aman’s signature minimalist elegance. Service is nothing short of extraordinary discreet, intuitive, and genuinely warm! The spa is a destination in itself, one of the most impressive urban wellness spaces in the world. Truly unforgettable and worth every moment!!"

"I stayed on a Friday and Saturday night in July and noticed some odd behavior from the night shift staff that really concerned me. Based on my 10+ years working in medicine, it seemed pretty clear that some of the male employees may have been using cocaine. I’d strongly suggest doing some random drug testing—especially for the night crew—just to be safe. It’s not something I’d bring up lightly, but it seemed serious enough to mention."

"We consider ourselves "AmanJunkies" (and have the hats to prove it), and rank several Aman properties around the world as among the best hotels on the planet. The Aman NYC, however, is not among them -- not even among the better hotels in NYC. First, the best part: the rooms are extremely beautiful and quite spacious, and overall the property is extremely well styled and furnished. The rest of the story: the service is very middling (more below), the restaurants and bars are nothing special by NYC standards (although the prices are definitely much higher), and the common areas are crowded with all kinds of non-hotel guests (not the usual Aman experience). As to the service level, while the staff was universally very friendly and tried to be helpful, for many of them it was clear they had limited experience at the property (or even in hospitality). As one example, during our stay there was a public event that resulted in the complete closure of 57th street for several blocks in front of the hotel, blocking any traffic from the main entrance. This event had been planned many weeks in advance by the city--will road closures also announced well in advance--and yet the hotel staff didn't provide any notice to guests (not even on the event day), and was completely unprepared that day to deal with the fact that hotel guests now had to find alternative transportation arrangements that picked up a few blocks from the hotel. Not a huge deal, but the kind of occurrence that even a mid-ranked Marriott would have probably alerted guests with a note under the door. (There was also a fire drill while we were there, the simple kind of thing that most hotels would provide advance notice. Zero communication from the Aman....well, at least, until we all heard the alarms.) We will continue to enjoy numerous amazing Aman properties around the world, but do not have any plans to return to this one...which is sad, becasue NYC should be a place where the Aman hospitality really shines."
