PB hotel design editorial

Facing Bryant Park at the corner of Fifth Avenue and 41st Street, where Midtown's institutional granite gives way to the park's canopy of London planes, the Andaz 5th Avenue was carved from a purpose-built tower designed by Buttrick White & Burtis and opened in 2010. The facade's limestone cladding and bronze-framed storefront windows — visible in the images as a double-height grid of darkened steel and warm glass — place the building in deliberate conversation with the Beaux-Arts bulk of the New York Public Library directly opposite, while the gilded botanical panel above the entrance door signals something more decorative within. Tony Chi designed the interiors across the hotel's 184 rooms and 16 floors, and his signature runs through every register of the public spaces: a lobby anchored by a faceted white sculptural form rising from the check-in desk, dark basalt-format floor tiles, and a field of cylindrical ceiling lights that give the arrival sequence the atmosphere of a contemporary art installation rather than a traditional hotel reception. The guest rooms carry the same restrained palette — powder-blue walls, low-platform beds with near-black upholstered frames, warm oak desks and nightstands — kept deliberately calm against the visual energy of Midtown beyond the floor-to-ceiling windows. Downstairs, the bar moves in a contrasting direction entirely: exposed brick, wide-plank oak floors, pendant drop lights above a long mahogany counter, and turned-leg furniture that draws more from Lower East Side saloon than Midtown corporate.

"We were only able to stay at the Andaz 5th Avenue for one night, but it was a wonderful stay. We upgraded to a King Deluxe, which turned out to be the largest hotel room I’ve ever stayed at in NYC. High ceilings, huge windows looking out at the NY Public Library, gigantic bathroom and large shower, lovely bed, and superior lighting. Bedside controls for lights, window shade, and climate control. Worked perfectly. The staff were uniformly helpful, friendly, and charming. We didn’t eat in the hotel restaurant. The location cannot be beat for Midtown; easy access to Grand Central or Times Square subways, Metro North, and Amtrak. Easy walk to Broadway. This is my new favorite hotel in New York. Would definitely recommend."

"Serious decline since 2010 opening. No better than a half the price Hyatt Centric now. Especially sad to see is the absolute travesty the management has allowed the original high style spaces to become shabby or even just closed off altogether. Hyatt Corporate needs to step in and fix this place. The potential is still there."

"This is a little gem of a hotel in midtown New York. The rooms are I thought were well appointed and comfortable. Tall ceilings, quiet internally, of course city sounds outside. Modern and clean. Beds I thought were comfortable. I've stayed in other hotels in NYC, I think I'll come back to this one if they keep it up. The location is perfect, service is outstanding. The desk agents are excellent as well as housekeeping."

"Tiny rooms and not very friend staff. Even for nyc standards. No pic as it wasn’t even worth taking. Moved out early and still Charged me for a drink I didn’t take from the mini bar even after I told them and they agreed to take it off ar check out. I emailed them again after see my folio and received no responses. And I’m globalist."
