PB hotel design editorial

Built in 1909 by the architect Walker & Morris as the Beaux-Arts home of the Battery Maritime Building, the cast-iron and steel ferry terminal at the foot of Manhattan has long been one of the harbor's most ornate civic structures — its green-painted colonnade and filigree metalwork facing the same waters that once carried commuters to Governors Island. Casa Cipriani New York, which claimed the building's upper floors in 2021, had the rare advantage of a shell already charged with history, and the design team — led by Thierry Despont, the French-American architect and decorator responsible for the restoration of the Statue of Liberty's interior — leaned into that inheritance rather than competing with it. The 47 rooms and suites carry Despont's characteristic register: lacquered black millwork frames the original tall windows, walls in burnt sienna and deep tobacco velvet ground the palette without overwhelming it, and bedroom furniture runs to high-gloss walnut case pieces and upholstered headboards in ivory linen. The bar and restaurant, branded as the 10 Corso Como of the Cipriani world, are rendered in oxblood lacquer panels and mirrored ceilings, leather-topped stools at a curved counter evoking a certain mid-century Venetian confidence. On the roof, a marble-topped outdoor bar frames the lower Manhattan skyline — One World Trade visible above the parapet — while the ornamental columns of the terminal's upper loggia remain visible through the guestroom doors, insisting that the building, not the brand, is the primary fact here.

"I had an amazing stay at Casa Cipriani. My favorite hotel in NYC. There is nothing quite like these views, they are mesmerizing. The club and the staff are amazing and so is the gym. I will be dreaming about it until i return!"

"I always have a wonderful time here with friends. Thank you Kyle, and the hosts at the membership lounge. I've had to borrow their blazers from time and the staff are always so kind. This is a top 3 membership club in New York city, and my clients also frequent this New York staple."

"We had the pleasure of staying at Casa Cipriani for a very quick trip into NYC. This has to be one of the most exclusive hotels in North America! From the minute you pull up to the private motor lobby of the hotel you know you are in for a different NYC experience. The elegant lobby is discreet and quiet and staffed with a wonderfully attentive front office and concierge team. The name recognition is really quite impressive. When the elevators open onto your guest room floor you feel like you are on board a luxury ocean liner from a bygone era. And this continues when you open the door to your stunning room. We were lucky enough to be facing the harbor and you truly felt like you were on a ship. What was really cool was that this is still a working ferry terminal and boats were coming in and out just a few feet below us... yet we could not hear a peep. Our room was incredibly spacious. In fact the closet was so big it could have been a bedroom! Easily one of the largest guestrooms we have stayed at in New York. We had a great nights sleep and there were thoughtful amenities bedside to help us sleep well. The absolute highlight of the property was the top floor "club." This area is only available to guests and members of Casa Cipriani... and to say it felt exclusive was an understatement. We enjoyed some delicious cocktails in the lounge area before heading to dinner. Our meal was in one word, exceptional. We kept on saying we felt like we were in Italy, and then would look out the window and there is no mistaking you are in NYC with the Brooklyn Bridge as a backdrop! It was the perfect evening with amazing and kind service. It was fine dining without being stuffy. Make sure to get all the classic Cipriani dishes.. they don't disappoint! There was also a Jazz Club we could have enjoyed but we were so delightfully stuffed we had to head to bed. One final note, the Wellness area was probably the best I have seen at any hotel. They truly have every kind of equipment you could ever imagine for a fantastic workout. I really needed it the morning after our decadent evening, but the comfortable bed had different plans for me! Thank you Casa Cipriani for a wonderful and memorable stay. We will be back for sure!"
