PB hotel design editorial

At the southwestern edge of Lower Manhattan, where Battery Park City's landfill grid meets the Hudson River, a fourteen-storey red brick tower distinguished by a soaring central glass atrium has served as the address for Conrad New York Downtown since the hotel opened in 2012. The building, developed as part of the broader Battery Park City Authority plan, gives the property its most striking structural feature: that triangulated glass spine visible at the facade, glowing against the nighttime skyline with One World Trade Center rising behind it, situates the hotel firmly within the ambitious civic rebuilding of Lower Manhattan that followed September 2001. Inside, the 463 all-suite rooms follow a restrained contemporary brief — charcoal-stained millwork, slate-grey upholstered headboards in channel-tufted panels, cream lacquer nightstands, and cowhide-style rugs anchoring dark wood floors. The palette shifts subtly between room categories, with some configurations leaning into ebonized oak case goods against crisp white bedding, framed artwork providing the primary color notes. The restaurant, with its sculptural folded white ceiling planes angled above an open kitchen counter in polished concrete, carries more design ambition than the guest rooms suggest. The rooftop terrace, planted with low boxwood hedging and furnished with white resin chairs and generously cushioned banquettes in fuchsia and plum, offers unobstructed sight lines across the Hudson to the Jersey City skyline — a view that remains among the more quietly dramatic available from any hotel terrace in the city.

"I’ve stayed in some beautiful hotels around the world, so it takes a lot to truly impress me. From the moment we stepped into Conrad New York Downtown, I knew this place was special. Every detail of the hotel feels intentional—from the stunning lobby to the rooftop bar and our beautifully appointed room overlooking the Hudson River. The view was breathtaking, the king bed was heavenly, the robes and slippers were luxuriously plush, and I loved having filtered drinking water right in our room. Even the twice-daily turndown service made us feel genuinely cared for. Any one of those details would have been enough to make us want to come back. But beautiful hotels exist everywhere. What transformed an incredible stay into an unforgettable one was the people. My husband and I were in New York celebrating the publication of his book, and Lori at the front desk made sure we felt celebrated from the moment we arrived. She wasn’t simply checking us in—she was genuinely invested in making our stay special. Her warmth, attentiveness, and kindness made us feel less like hotel guests and more like family. She truly set the tone for what became one of the most memorable hotel experiences we’ve ever had. Then, on what was supposed to be our final day, our trip took an unexpected turn when my husband was injured and spent seven hours in the emergency room. We unexpectedly needed to extend our stay, and if we thought the customer service was exceptional before, it somehow became even more extraordinary. Lori and Sandrea, the manager, met us with such compassion, grace, and flexibility that what could have been an incredibly stressful day became one where we still felt completely supported and cared for. How many people can say they spent seven hours in the emergency room and still look back on their weekend with gratitude? That’s only possible because of the remarkable people at this hotel. Lori welcomed us like family from the moment we arrived to the last morning at checkout. When our trip suddenly took an unexpected turn, Sandrea’s compassion and generosity were extraordinary. And while I was sitting in the hospital, overwhelmed and frantically calling the hotel trying to figure out what we were going to do, Kimberly and Dominique answered with such calm, kindness, and reassurance that they instantly helped steady me. Those moments may have seemed small to them, but they meant everything to us. When I think back on this trip, I won’t just remember the gorgeous room or the incredible view of the Hudson River. I’ll remember how Lori, Sandrea, and the entire team made us feel. Luxury is easy to create with beautiful design. Genuine hospitality is much harder to find. Conrad New York Downtown has mastered both. We’ve stayed at many wonderful hotels over the years, but there’s no question where we’ll be booking the next time we’re in New York. Conrad New York Downtown you have earned our loyalty, and we can’t wait to return."

"It was a fantastic stay. I would recommend to anyone in there area. The staff is extremely helpful and is one of the best areas of NY I have ever been in. The rooms are top quality and I highly recommend this hotel to anyone! I want to give a special mention to Mehdi in housekeeping. He goes out of his way to make sure you’re enjoying your stay and to see if you need anything, and if you do, he’ll help right away. Great hotel with great service!"

"We checked into the Conrad hotel for one night to celebrate a special day. The front desk agent very nice along with bell service. My poor review rating is due to the room! For 120,000 Hilton points it just was not worth to stay! The couch was Disgusting I would not even allow our belongings or us to sit on the heavily stained couch! Also, the shower is in need of repair along with resurfacing as I should not see rust, peeling or built-up mildew for a luxury hotel. Also, the tub did not drain properly or hold hot water. We had to take luke warm showers since I was the second person, I had to take it with dirt at my feet which is absolutely disgusting. There were also former leak stains in the room which were noticeable. And no one cleans the air vents because when you look up, you can see the built-up dust and mold inside. Had we not started off with the couch not even wanting to touch, Maybe we wouldn’t have looked up and noticed the events I don’t know but once you have a negative experience, it is so hard to get the yuck feeling from your body. Again, had I booked a non-luxury hotel, fine I’ll understand at a Home2Suites or Embassy. However, this was a luxury 120,000 points which was worthy when you can’t even use the sitting area and have to resort to eating in the bed sitting in the bed watching TV in the bed being confined to half the room!!! I have stayed at several Conrads and this was Embarrassing for the brand!!!"

"My husband and I recently stayed at the Conrad New York Downtown to celebrate our anniversary, and it was truly one of the best hotel experiences we have ever had. From the very beginning, General Manager David Nicola set the tone for the stay. Before our arrival, he personally helped resolve a question regarding a Hilton offer and called us back within minutes. When we arrived, he came to the front desk to welcome us and introduced us to Executive Chef Christopher “Kit” Skarstrom. Keni Balbuena at the front desk was consistently warm, upbeat, professional, and helpful. Chef Skarstrom was visible in the restaurant each day, always gracious and approachable, and the food was outstanding. Rohit Mahajan, the Food and Beverage Manager, also went above and beyond to make our anniversary feel special. What impressed us most was the genuine hospitality throughout the entire hotel. Every question was answered, every detail was handled with care, and the housekeeping and restaurant teams were equally kind and attentive. Our Lifetime Diamond status reflects many years of extensive travel and loyalty to Hilton and it’s brand. We have stayed at Hilton properties throughout the United States and beyond. During those travels, we have experienced service ranging from very good to, on occasion, deeply troubling and disappointing. So we understand the difference between employees/properties who are simply “checking the box” and a team that is committed to the true nature of “hospitality”. The entire atmosphere of the hotel was beautiful, yet warm and welcoming. Luxury can be found in beautiful rooms, impressive surroundings, and excellent amenities, but genuine hospitality comes from “the people” who serve. And this team got it right! We left the Conrad New York Downtown not only impressed by the property, but deeply touched by the kindness and care shown. We look forward to returning and once again experiencing the exceptional hospitality that has made this hotel our new home whenever we visit New York City."

"What a wonderful stat. Everyone is so friendly and accommodating. Gabe helped me at the end of my trip to be on my way, and made me feel belonging of the Conrad family. What a beautiful spot and well run resort feeling hotel. A gem in NYC. Grateful."
