PB hotel design editorial

At the southwestern edge of Lower Manhattan, where Battery Park City's landfill grid meets the Hudson River, a fourteen-storey red brick tower distinguished by a soaring central glass atrium has served as the address for Conrad New York Downtown since the hotel opened in 2012. The building, developed as part of the broader Battery Park City Authority plan, gives the property its most striking structural feature: that triangulated glass spine visible at the facade, glowing against the nighttime skyline with One World Trade Center rising behind it, situates the hotel firmly within the ambitious civic rebuilding of Lower Manhattan that followed September 2001. Inside, the 463 all-suite rooms follow a restrained contemporary brief — charcoal-stained millwork, slate-grey upholstered headboards in channel-tufted panels, cream lacquer nightstands, and cowhide-style rugs anchoring dark wood floors. The palette shifts subtly between room categories, with some configurations leaning into ebonized oak case goods against crisp white bedding, framed artwork providing the primary color notes. The restaurant, with its sculptural folded white ceiling planes angled above an open kitchen counter in polished concrete, carries more design ambition than the guest rooms suggest. The rooftop terrace, planted with low boxwood hedging and furnished with white resin chairs and generously cushioned banquettes in fuchsia and plum, offers unobstructed sight lines across the Hudson to the Jersey City skyline — a view that remains among the more quietly dramatic available from any hotel terrace in the city.

"We held our daughter's Sweet 16 party at the Conrad, renting 2 adjacent, connected suites that are interconnected. Stephanie Martinez and the entire staff were fabulous and made it extra special. Stephanie sent birthday cards to my daughter's suite and when we needed more towels and two mini frigs for cake and drinks, they were cheerfully and promptly delivered. The rooftop bar was terrific about allowing us to take pictures of my daughter and her 4 friends with Jersey City in the background. Finally, Stephanie arranged to have balloons and a special cake delivered to my daughter at the Atrio Wine Bar & Restaurant the next morning during lunch."

"I had a fantastic stay at the Conrad NYC Downtown. The hotel is beautifully designed, with a modern and upscale feel throughout. The rooms were impressively spacious, which made a big difference in comfort, and the shower was a true standout—large, luxurious, and honestly one of the best hotel showers I’ve experienced. I also appreciated the thoughtful touches, like the variety of toiletries and amenities, which made the stay feel even more elevated. A special shoutout to Kenneth Maldonado at check in and check out, he was incredibly friendly, professional, and genuinely helpful, and made the experience even better from start to finish. The location is a huge plus. It’s right by the water, making it perfect for relaxing walks along the waterfront. There are several nearby parks that really enhance the experience, including a peaceful lily pond area with ducks where you can sit and unwind. Teardrop Park and Rockefeller Park were highlights—quiet, well-maintained, and great spots to take a break or have a picnic. The nearby Irish Hunger Memorial added an interesting element to the area as well. Overall, this hotel delivers on comfort, design, and location. I’d absolutely stay here again."

"Amazing location and an exceptional place to stay. The room itself was outstanding, spacious, spotless, and clearly very well maintained. The check-in experience was genuinely the best I have had. Sandrea was incredibly personable and welcoming, supported by her fantastic team, Kadija and Kenneth, who made everything feel seamless from the moment I arrived. Thank you all for such a wonderful stay. I will absolutely be back."

"Average is how I would describe this hotel. In any other city, this is branded a Doubletree, maybe a Hilton, in NYC, it's a Conrad. No other Conrads would allow this one to share a table with them. Where do I start? I'm a Lifetime Diamond, I'm not new to hotels, I am most certainly not new to the Conrad brand, it is one of my favorite brands, and this is no Conrad. Super impressive lobby, which is where I think the Forbes reviewer spent their time, doubtful they visited a room. The trim outside my room is falling off - literally, (pictured) my room is tired and small. I'm in a 'king suite', and it's smaller than what I would normally find for a similar price, or less, in Manhattan. I would hate to see what a 'standard' room is. The sink is literally two feet away from the toilet. If you are taller than 5'10'', you'll likely feel compelled to bend over a little in the shower, it's a low ceiling. Though I will say, this is the best water pressure I have experienced in NYC, excellent controls and as I said, superb pressure. The minibar is apparently 'sometimes' locked, you have to dial '0' to get them to come and unlock it, I'm not sure what kind of clientele they are accustomed to, but I don't think I have ever stayed at a hotel that was $800 for the night, out of season, where I needed to ask the concierge to unlock the minibar. Of course, you'll need the minibar if you arrive after 1045pm because the bar closes at 11pm, yes, even on a Friday. No food either. Go out to one of the two open bars close by, the closest is about 13 minutes if you walk briskly. Not so great after a day of travel. But you won't get room service or a bar here after 1045pm. The room I was given was on the 2nd floor, don't ask about the view, I see cars, that's it, just cars. The Ikea quality furniture in the room certainly helped me feel like my money was well spent - in the lobby. Frankly it feels like the owners spent all the money on art (though half of the art in the corridors - again, a cruise kind of vibe in the tiny corridors) still have the folds in them. The lobby is very impressive, outstanding; shame they didn't save a little budget for the rooms, because the lobby promises something the rooms can't deliver. As for cleanliness, meh. It's OK, the sink had hairs in it, probably the cleaners, hopefully. Carpet had crumbs all over the one side of the bed, always comforting. I have not been disappointed in a Conrad for a long time - until now. This is average at best, truly not worth the money, if I had paid half this, I would still feel aggrieved. Did they get anything right you might wonder? Well, they have a nice filtered water unit in the room and they give you two small tin flasks to fill up. It's quiet, my room is about 100 feet from the lobby and I can't hear them, so that's nice. Would I recommend you stay here? Well that depends; are you in town for corporate stuff, and the company is paying? You'll be fine. Looking for luxury downtown? Absolutely not."

"Our stay at the Conrad New York Downtown was nothing short of amazing—truly an A1 experience from the moment we arrived. We’re here celebrating spring break with our son, and the level of hospitality made it even more special. From the entrance, we were warmly welcomed by Herman, the doorman, who set the tone right away with his professionalism and kindness. You can tell he genuinely cares about guests feeling comfortable and valued. Check-in was seamless thanks to Elliot at the front desk. He was efficient, welcoming, and made the process feel effortless while still being personable. After a day of travel, that kind of smooth arrival means everything. A special thank you to Sandrea, the Front Office Manager, who truly elevated our stay. Her attention to detail, leadership, and commitment to excellent service did not go unnoticed. It’s clear she takes pride in ensuring guests have a top-tier experience. From the beautiful entrance to settling into our room, everything exceeded expectations. The environment is clean, modern, and family-friendly while still giving that luxury feel. This stay was exactly what we needed for a memorable spring break with our son. Hospitality was A1 across the board, and we will absolutely be returning. Highly recommend! — Violyves / Motivated Modern Mom ✨"
