PB hotel design editorial

At 57th Street between Park and Madison, I.M. Pei's 52-storey limestone tower announced itself in 1993 as the tallest hotel in New York — a claim it held for years — and gave the Four Seasons Hotel New York a silhouette that remains one of Midtown's most considered pieces of commercial architecture. Pei brought the same classical restraint to this commission that had defined his East Wing at the National Gallery: the facade is dressed in Magny limestone, the fluted pilasters stepping the tower back in a series of setbacks that acknowledge the Art Deco grammar of the surrounding streetscape without literally quoting it. The entrance canopy visible from the street — a scalloped, fan-shaped bronze and frosted glass marquee — carries the period's confidence in ornamental metalwork without tipping into excess. Inside, the 368 rooms average over 600 square feet, among the most generous proportions of any Manhattan hotel, and the interiors designed by Chhada Siembieda carry a palette of honey-toned maple, pale woven carpet, and brushed steel that feels more like a well-appointed private apartment than conventional hotel accommodation. The restaurant space, where mature trees rise through a double-height volume amid deep green velvet seating and gold-washed walls, gives the ground floor a warmth that contradicts the tower's cool exterior logic. The bar, saturated in crimson leather and emperador dark marble, pulls in the opposite direction entirely — theatrical where the guest floors are serene.

Four Seasons Hotel New York Reviews

"We had a fantastic time at the Four Seasons NYC. From the moment we checked in until we left. Our flight was very late, 5+ hours late due to an American Airlines equipment problem. The staff was very efficient in getting us to our room and our room service dinner was great. No request was left unanswered, services were amazing from housekeeping, bellmen, doorman and everyone we encountered. Our room was beautiful on the 44 floor with fabulous views of the city. The bed was very comfortable and the decor modern with good lighting and all the outlets etc. we needed for our electronics. My husband loves the app where he can request ice, or anything we need and it is quickly attended to. We also loved the fresh cookies, candy and fruit that were waiting for us when we arrived from dinner most nights. Breakfast in the Garden Restaurant was also wonderful. Our server had been there since the hotel opened and was gracious and efficient. The entire staff at the Four Seasons made our 7 night stay perfect."

"Returned to the Four Seasons New York for the first time since it re-opened (second visit, overall). We had a terrific stay -- chose a Junior Suite -- got a room on the 27th floor. Everything was in order. Carpet looked new. Bed extremely comfortable, and the HVAC worked perfectly. Room nicely equipped with comfortable furniture. Quiet, especially given that we overlooked 57th street. The lighting in the hotel was spot on -- and that's a sore point for me in many hotels these days (see my last review of terrible state of The Carlyle). Housekeeping didn't miss a beat. I was impressed with just how friendly each and every staff member was during our stay -- I had to pinch myself to remind me that I was in New York City. We didn't use the restaurant. I'd gladly come back -- and given that I've forsaken The Carlyle due to their regrettable recent renovation, will very likely do so. Nicely done."

"Not much I can say besides: Four Season Perfection! Not a single thing to complain about. Staff is absolutely fantastic, knows everybody’s name, very friendly. Front desk and concierge desk are the type of people I would hire had I a 5-star hotel. Breakfast staff is also very nice and accommodating (many names I to list, but mentioning Milton here who’s a character every hotel would want to have). Rooms are great, super quiet, super clean. And always on time cleaning and turn-down service. Absolutely recommend."
